This is copy pasta from his two recent blog entries regarding sony's new bs/fw update.

Don't Update

A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat's Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play... "

Wait, you are removing a feature?

First off, I want to apologize to all the people who use Linux on their PS3. Before releasing, I weighed the pros and cons, and considered the possibility of an impact on OtherOS support. My logic was this. OtherOS support had already been removed from the Slim(not for technical reasons; I believe it only existed in the first place to promote the Cell for IBM) The builders had apparently no intention of including it in future products. So for the purposes of openness why not release? Not like anything else has(or probably will be) done on the PS3.

Now you go and remove a feature that people expected to be included with the expensive device they purchased, citing "security concerns". What security concerns? It's not like the exploit can be run even close to without the users knowledge. You have to open the fucking thing up. How could this harm users? Your blog post doesn't list positive reasons for upgrading like I think most users expect. Instead it lists things you will lose if you don't upgrade. Seriously?

The PlayStation 3 is the only product I know that loses features throughout it's life cycle. Software PS2 emulation, SACD playback, and OtherOS support are all just software switches you can flip. It's unbelievable you would go and flip one, not just on new boxes you are shipping, but on tens of millions already in the field.

Again I'm sorry users. Sony, I expected more from you.

Well, its maybe not war but i'm up in arms over sony's decision to fuck me and the millions of other phat users to use our system not only for what we want to use it for, but what it was advertised for (so sony could save some tax money for shipping the console as a "computer system") because they didn't want to play cat and mouse with the only person who is capable of opening a system up for its true potential.

And even so, a person like me, who has even fixed his broken laser ps3 himself would never try to solder something to the motherboard just to get an exploit that can only be done in linux and has to be done each time you turn linux on.

What sony may or may not know, is that the lv1 and lv2 calls are out in the wilds now and just blocking other os now will not stall the game os hole alot of people are looking for.

I do support homebrew, i do support the good developers out there too, i don't support piracy on current gen games but i do support the emulators of past systems and games i can't buy anywhere without cutting off an arm and a tongue to get them. How else could anyone play panzer dragoon saga for the saturn without spending $350 for the pair?

I will not be updating until i know for sure what will happen if i do. I pray this is just a fuct up april fools joke but i don't think it is.

One thing you failed to notice though, while fighting this holy war all about Sony Sucks, is that this move wasn't announced and the hacked PS3 was being left alone... until they got Motorstorm running.

Just like PSP homebrew wasn't being attacked by Sony, until UMD ISO playback was included.

While it sucks that Sony has to lock this stuff down, look at it from the other angle. QUIT STEALING SHIT! If the hacker community stayed with just trying to get homebrew running and custom apps, Sony wouldn't give a flying fuck. But the hacker community broke DMCA and got an illegal BluRay backup of Motorstorm running.

Gee, I wonder how Sony would respond considering the drastic sales decline in PSP games after the hacker community decided that included with every PSP purchase, they got an unlimited supply of free games.

thanks Niero.

Sheppy, thats one intsantce of one game and thats the only game they got to work, but you already had to have motorstorm on its original disc and exactly how many people have bluray burners and a good enough bandwidth to download a 15+ gig game? and not to mention the actually security on the bluray disks themselves.

Qraze, i read your comments on the front page story and i empathize with the fact that you're about to lose a feature you actually use. Hope Geohotz can find you a solution.

I'm going to be very interested to see what Sony does about the inaccessible HDD space. It's not good enough to just say, well that 15GB of yours can go fuck itself.

Qraze, the first one is always a matter of time. Remember when Frimware downgrading on PSP required a copy of Liberty City Stories? Or running a PSX ISO required a product shell from the actual PSN store?

Your point is that the Motorstorm backup was the end game. It never is. Instead the Motorstorm backup was the start. And once that's been dug open, the cascade effect happens. Who has a BluRay burner? Who had a DVD-R, or a CD-R during it's time? Who has the bandwidth? You don't have a Family Video near you or buy a game for $60 just to sell it for $50 on Craigslist after it's been copied?

Sorry, the Motorstorm was the beginning and Sony reacted. If people wanted this exploit to be uncontested, they should have stuck to running their software, not switching focus to software theft.

I don't really know how I feel about this. Mainly because I've never used homebrew or CFW for anything.

However, I can tell you that this is just simply cause and effect. Sony would have never removed the Other OS feature had Geohot not exploited it. Ever heard the term "This is why we can't have nice things"? Well, this is why. How is any of this Sony's fault anyways? I know that they are one of the largest corporations in the world but even THEY don't have the ability to see in to the future. How were they supposed to know that 4 years later some kid would find some almost minute hole in a feature that they intended to allow users to bring a more open-source function to the PS3?

Granted, what Geohot did wasn't technically bad, illegal (I dont think) or anything.....but.....he IS the reason why Sony is removing the Other OS feature.

So, in my opinion, the heat shouldn't be directed at Sony. It should be directed at the one guy who ruined it for everyone else.

That would be Geohot.

Actually, it wasn't GeoHot at fault. It was the asshole who piggybacked what GeoHot did and got a PS3 game running as an illegal copy. Until Motorstorm was shown running, Sony didn't give a flying fuck.

i understand sony's stance on this. its better to have a few lawsuits a pay for court costs then play cat and mouse with update after update and the loss of publisher support, but the 360 has been cracked wide open and yet i don't see publishers jumping ship for the ps3 because its so secure.

in fact, actual piracy this late in the game for sony would help them sell more consoles, but even so, the geohotz exploit is only for phat ps3's and linux installed ones. not everyone has the patience to get that os working properly, it takes trial and error, even you are reading a how to at the time you do it.
i would be more happy if sony would have just blocked the install of other os then fuck over the few people who actually have it and use it.

you can look at my sidebar, the first sentence tells you i got linux on it and i took pride in that fact that i got it running great.

but now, the end for that feature is very near and i don't have a clue what will happen to my ps3 when the updat detects linux will it just block the button, leaving 15+ gigs of un-usablespace on my hdd? or will it delete everything and reformat my drive? fucking me over of my games, music, movies and pictures? i don't have a way to back it up at the moment until maybe this weekend so i'm fuct like usual.

also wanted to add, what the hacking scene was actually trying to with geohotz exploit was to find or program a program that could access and use the rsx for linux, so we could play more pc games and stuff that needed 3d acceleration to run. had nothing to do with hacking the game os but now, its too late for that and if geohotz can successfully create/mod a firmware, its all over for sony becasue they choose to go down this road.

Wow, what a shit storm. I would probably eat my PS3 whole if I ended up having 15 gigs of dead space due to this bullshit.
