40 million pirates out there.
Qraze | 9:50 PM on 05.04.2008 14 comments

Apparently Mark Rein v.p. of epic games has pointed out that they have discovered an unheard of 40 million attempts at illegitimate access to unreal tournament3 servers via pirated keys. I think they might be a little mad about it but that's why i see pc gaming dying off, you need an uber-badass computer to play almost any new game their making these days and people don't like it when their pc graphics card becomes nearly obsolete a year after they bought it. But those are some hefty numbers to toss out. 40 million!! Dammit man, there can't be that many high end computers out there right? But then again these are attempts to gain access to the servers, so it really be like 25 million people i believe have gotten it illegally. A good example of why game companies are shying away from the pc. I could be wrong, i don't really care but the number 40 million is a shitton of attempts,no lie. #1_in_the_hood_G!!

all I got was 40 mil people pirate and uh...yea.

I dont understand what the computer and graphic cards bit has to do with people pirating. Are you implying people are too busy spending assloads of money that they'd be too poor to spend a few extra bucks for a pc game?

They have 40,000,000 logged attempts to use pirated keys?

From what? 6 computers? You guys know key-gens can run as scripts and doing 5,000-10,000 different key combos for access ain't no big deal to some of these guys right?

I'd wager that there's probably less than 10,000 actual pirated attempts by people to actually play the game online, and you throw in some script kiddie level macros and it grows to 40 million attempts over the course of a few months.

No way have 25 million people pirated this game. It has sold over a million units since release (pc and ps3), so say around half a million pc units (but probably less). This being a multiplayer game, most people who want to play it will buy it (some after pirating), because most people with enough intelligence to pirate a game know that you cant play on the official servers without buying it. I doubt that more than 500000 people have pirated ut3, and thats being generous.

40 million has got to be an inflated number.

Yeah, it's probably not 40 million different people. Probably just a fraction of that amount of people who just tried to connect multiple times.

While I agree that PC gaming is dying, I think the situation is better for PC gamers now than it was five to ten years ago. Today, you can build a computer that runs any game out there EXCEPT Crysis at max settings, for about a thousand bucks. I know this because I did it a couple weeks ago. Crysis is a computer rapist, but there are just some games that are ahead of their time. I guarantee when Morrowind came out, there weren't many computers that could run it without chugging a bit. In 2000, building a high-end PC cost a bit more than it would today.
