Dead Rising is my favorite game. I like it and the remake, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop almost equally. Some people couldn't look past it's flaws. But is is a well done game.
Some spoilers ahead, but you should have played the game already. :P
If you ask me, the save system is excellent. It makes you feel like you actually have to try to survive. Checkpoints make games a bit too easy. Limited saving is a good game design in my opinion, as is makes the player more cautious. Not all games need it, but I enjoy the challenge. And besides, there were alot of save spots.
The story is engaging. The whole thing with the government trying to make more beef and ending up making zombies is pretty interesting in my opinion, and the whole zombie wasp thing pretty unique. There were some silly lines of dialogue though, but they made the game, nicely campy. Frank's will to get the story out, and Carlito's mysterious plans keep you interested. The end is perfect if you ask me. It made me want a sequel, of which I am very excited for.
The characters are pretty well developed. Frank with his strong-willed desire to get his scoop, Brad's desire to get the bad guy, Carlito's desire for revenge (there is alot of desire). All of these things kept me interested. I cared about almost all of the characters, and with their deaths, even Carlito's, I was affected in some way.
The gameplay is pretty well refined. I like the simplicity of using weapons, and though the special moves were a bit frustrating to pull off, I didn't have much of a problem with them. The camera added so much to the game for me. Taking pictures in games is a great thing in my opinion. The game had an odd, somewhat funny vibe to it with the taking pictures surrounded by zombies, but it is very fun to take pictures.
The psychos were a bit frustrating, but I loved almost all the fights. The only one which I felt was bland was the snipers battle. But I loved how all the psychos had their own special things to them. Carlito's rough close-quarters attacks were nice, like his kick and slamming his giant rifle on you. Or Cliff's big stab though the back and his, truthfully, quite annoying, sneakiness. Brock's fight was awesome. It was unexpected, and tough, but I really enjoyed it.
Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop is a great remake (yes, remake). The emphasis on guns was a nice addition. The decision to make the scoops into mission greatly improved the game, though I had a desire to get 'S Rank' on them all, with S rank unlocking some secret items, and S and A rank for all missions in a set unlocking extra missions, I got pretty frustrated trying to get good rankings. But CTYD is very fun, and the controls are lot better, especially with the special moves. They are executable only when you hit a zombie in a body part (like in Resident Evil 4), and depending on where you are in correspondence to them, you can do different ones. Oh and the text and saving is "fixed".
Over all, I love the game in both of it's renditions. The story, gameplay, characters, and design are executed excellently. I can't recommend the game enough. Even if you didn't like it, try it again with a more open mind, or play it on Wii.

Kudos thogh!
Maybe it was because I kind of marathoned this over the course of several days, but it seemed to drone on. It needed something to break up the repetitive mission structure and the bosses were a bit meh. Then at the end with the special forces I just was frustrated by being shot from multiple directions and not being able to do anything about it.
I want to go back and play with Megaman and the Megabuster but I have other things on my plate.
I know what you mean about the mission structure. There are way too many people to save. The whole fun of the original was the fact that you could run around doing whatever, and didn't have to do every scoop. So they really changed it.
