About Me
Man, my favorite game has to be Half-Life. But I believe the best game of all-time would have to be Grand Theft Auto IV. I'm currently playing Grand Theft Auto IV, Crackdown, Oblivion, The Orange Box, and Postal 2. I'm looking forward to Mirror's Edge, that looks crazy as hell.

14 Years Old and The M Rating
Pwningclock | 3:19 PM on 06.03.2008 24 comments

So, we all know what that bastard Joseph Lieberman did to the gaming industry to create the ESRB. And now, apparently, there's more people who don't accept that 14 year olds are literate or mature enough to handle M rated content.
You wanna know the truth? Haha, okay, well, the truth is that I wanna see this violent content. I love killing people in the game, I enjoy any type of bloody violence in a game. And now, that must make me a sociopath. But no, I'm normal as can be, give or take a few tragedies in my life.
But c'mon, I'm 14 years old and I haven't killed anybody. I first played GTA when I was about 9 or 10. I turned out fine, no school shootings or anything. Woopty-doo, eh?
I'm ready for the flames, so, bring 'em on guys.

Yeah, uh... this is nothing new.

Try watching your dad play Duke Nukem 3D and Quake 3 Arena when under age 5, and then playing Quake 3A not too long after that.

I play those kinds of games, and I'm two years younger. So stop drawing all of the attention towards yourself, for doing nothing special.

I'll just set the record straight.
I'm not drawing attention towards myself, I know I'm not doing anything special, and I know I am nothing special.

I'm clearing shit up for the people who think all 12-14 year olds are the same. Just look at Blake, he says he's two years younger than me and he plays these games, he also seems literate.

Just setting shit straight, I'm sure I'm not the first.

Technically, you're still in a mentally formative state. Adolescence is a MFer.

You are the standard deviation, and the expected consequence of the rating system: kids get their hands on things they "shouldn't. Not that you're bringing the world down or anything, but posts like this don't help anyone's case that the system is working as intended, even if you haven't killed anybody.

yet.

Being 17 doesn't make one mature, nor does being younger than 17 make one childish.

Being 14 means you know nothing, absolutely nothing, you wont believe me, but its true. One day you'll see.

You were barely alive when the ESRB was created. Joe Liberman didn't do shit to make the ESRB. The industry made it itself so the government wouldn't be involved. And with out the ESRB today shit would be a whole lot worse for you because the government would be involved.

To me, this blog proves you shouldn't be allowed to buy M rated games.

Wow; so many fucktarded people on Dtoid. Maybe it's just today.

I'm 21 and have been playing violent games (the entire GTA series for example) since I was 10 or 11. I haven't even thought about killin' a foo, so I think this kid is good...As are the rest of 'em.

I remember when I was fourteen. I wanted Twisted Metal Black, but I couldn't get it. Poor me.

14 year olds are not old enough to handle Mature content. Playing them won't make you a sociopath, but you will handle it far differently from an adult.

Jonathon, youre just plain wrong there. All the 14 year olds i know (admittedly most are a bit older now, but looking back) can easily handle 'mature content'. Most of them do so on tv, in movies, and of course in games on a regular basis.

Time are changing, but a lot of older people arent. The generations who have grown up with special effects and video games know the difference from real life. How people handle 'mature content' they know is not real is very different to how they would handle such a situation for real.

The entire point of the ESRB is that it's up to your parental unit to decide whether you're ready for such things. They're going to know you a whole lot better than any bureaucrat. It's one of the responsibilities of parenting. And it would seem that they've chosen for you to not play these games. I actually salute your folks for taking an active role in your upbringing by not allowing to you to play M rated games.

I have two little brothers, 10 and 12 years younger than me. I took them to movies all of the time when they were younger. But only after I had seen them first, to make sure that I knew what they would be seeing, and knowing if there was something that needed to be discussed.

I wish that all parents would take these courses of action as opposed to just buying their kids whatever they wanted. Taking an active role in parenting would prevent these problems for which video games are scapegoated.

14 year olds don't know how to handle mature content as well as they think they do because they have no idea how they're really handling it. Most of the shit that goes on is in the subconscious and no one is going to notice it out right. Violent content IS going to have a more profound impact on young adolescents if they realize it or not. I've grown up on violent movies and video games and I know that they have desensitized me to violence in general. And the fact that you distinguish real violence to fake violence and aren't outwardly affected by fake violence proves that you've been desensitized to violence in general.

In the most recent case, Ninja Gaiden II within the first five minutes you see a guy shot in the face and the insides of his blown away skull. When I first saw that I thought "HOLY SHIT THATS AWESOME" and I know that because I've been desensitized to all this shit.

I was probably mature enough to handle M-rated games at 12 or 13ish. However, my parents still had qualms then about purchasing anything with a rating higher than "E". xD

They had my best intentions in mind though, I thank them for that at least.

Now can we please move on? This topic's been beaten to death do many times and subsquently resurrected that it's giving Ridley a run for his money. o.O

Alexradl:
My point was that it isn't fair to paint everyone younger than 17 as immature. The government or game-vendor should not decide who is and isn't mature enough for a certain game. Only someone's legal guardian should be able to decide if those that they care for are mature enough or not for a particular game. As such, it is bullshit that game-vendors choose not to sell certain games to certain people.

Strange thing what the media does these days to people.

Apparently, anyone who's played or is playing a game like Grand Theft Auto who's below the age of 18 WILL kill someone.

It's bullshit, I'm sure I'm not the only here who knows that.
