It is a widely known fact that irc (internet relay chat) sucks (is old and busted) compared to todays standards of ventrilo's epic win (is new hotness). So i set out on a mission to find out why people still use irc.
First i went and asked an irc fag why he still uses irc - his/her name has been altered to conceal his/her identity

Puppet- Any headset can be used as a microphone and most computers have built in microphones now aday.

Yes, multiple people talking at a time so you can't hear what anyone is saying is better than a work friendly, easy to use program such as IRC. Puppet, you are so smart.
Meh I am not always at the comp.. and I like to look back at convos that I may have missed. Can't do that in vent.
In IRC you don't miss anything with people speaking at the same time. In Vent, people talk at the same time.. and you miss shit. Gets old IMO.
I have the attention span of a mite, I get up and go all the time from the comp. mIRC just works better for me. :P

i still dont understand why you people think it is easier to type rather than to just speak and if you are gamers why would u take the time to stop playing, read somthing and type a respons rather than to leave a voice chat program running in the backround so u can respond when ever you need to. im sure everyone has had to problem where they get a text message on an im program then they have to alt tab out of a game to read it or even worse the game auto minimizes, that is an annoyance so why would you choose to use that

people rarly talk over each other in vent and when they do you can always understand both kinda like when people talk over eachother in real life you also have to advantage of seperate rooms so when there are two different conversations going on you can seperate or now with ventrilo 3 you can use private chat to only talk to one person either thru text or voice

Yeah puppet, that text option is there, but to do both, again, gets old. People who want to come back and see what the heck we're talking about will get confused about text and speak at the same time.
It's not so much that we like typing better than speaking.. well maybe I dunno, but it's the quality of speech. I often couldn't understand what was being said. In Vent shit always had to be repeated for the person who was supposed to hear the message. Again it has been a while since I was on vent.
TBH I really just like being able to leave my chair and do something else, come back and catch up, and then socialize from there.
It's just my own preference though.
Why listen to people when you are playing a game? Why listen to people... ever?

To be honest, the first place i went is ventrilo, it's not this 4chan-esque place people describe it to be, we have people like Athiestium (british), Zaqu (Canadian), Kamikazi Tutor (Portuguese), and puppet (Asshole)
You can socialize in ventrilo just as good as in IRC, benefit is that text is text, you dont get a feel for who the person on the other side is. voice chat lets you hear things you would never get on chat, I agree if you're working, you cant really be on Vent, but if you're working, FUCKING WORK.
Anywho, I love ventrilo, the people in it, and whenever there's that off day where ventrilo is actually down (because Fronz forgot to pay the billz) I find my self feeling a little empty without all my buddies. Vent for lyfe.
