The Christmas day I got my PSP, I had Sam & Max Hit The Road running on the fucker before noon. Homebrew was pretty much the only reason I wanted one. There were barely any games available that I was interested in.
Flash forward 3 years. I'm trying to figure out how to get God Of War to run without sacrificing ScummVM and Heretic and the like. I haven't updated past the hacked version of the 3.40 firmware until now, because none of my other native-PSP games have needed it, but GoW needs fucking 3.80. I seriously doubt this is because it uses any features that 3.40 through 3.71 lacked, but hey, gotta keep those bastard consumers from using their property the way they want, right?
Now, with the PSP, Sony at least has the "rawr them pirates be stealin' our sales" excuse to throw around. I can sort of understand that. I happen to suspect that if you made homebrew capability a selling point rather than a horrid enemy, the PSP would sell quite a bit better, but I don't have data to back that up. This brings us to a question:
Why the christ won't Apple let you run your own stuff on the iPhone?
They don't have the piracy excuse, because all you could really pirate with the iPhone is music. You don't need custom software to play MP3s. (I think. I mean, do you? That would be really evil.) Do they sell applications of their own? That's all I can really think of that would justify it in any rational way. If you really stretch your mind past the plausibility barrier you could suggest that they want to keep those damn emulators off their system, but the iPhone is an utter shit gaming device in the first place, lacking buttons and all.
(Don't get me wrong, I loathe Apple and their products utterly. My MP3 player is a Creative Labs mofo that plays XviD movies and hooks up to the TV to play my stuff in DVD resolution.)
Anyway, I'm gonna head back and try to get fucking 3.51-M33 compiled so I can then upgrade to 3.80-M33. I would do 3.90-M33 but I can't fucking find the official firmware file it draws from (Can't include the modified firmware whole because Sony will sue your ass for copyright infringement!), plus the 3.90-M33-2 update apparently breaks the PlayStation emulator.
THIS SHOULD NOT BE THIS COMPLICATED.

The Sony stuff still stands.
if they don't want you to use homebrew, they should make sure that there's enough shit out there to have fun with and at the moment that's simply not the case...
