Hai! You may know me as Professor Pew in older times. If you see a cblog here from beyond September 2010 or something: that's from the cblogging days and not anything editor-related :)
You may have heard about this, but John Woo is making a movie about one specific battle from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms: The battle of Red Cliffs or the Battle of Chibi.
Why should you be excited about this? First of all, all Three Kingdoms movie adaptations have sucked so far. There is a new one out this year, but it has gotten pretty terrible reviews (see here and here). The only good adaptation has been the chinese TV series from 1991.
I bought 1 of 4 sets of that show on dvd (12 dvd's per set or something), but unfortunately it only had english subs for dialogue and not for locations and poems. And it had that terrible video/tv quality that made it a bit less epic than you would've expected.
John Woo going back to Asia is already a good thing, but having him helm Red Cliff only makes it better. Check out an early trailer:
And now check out the new 9 minute (leaked?) promo reel:

The movie will have an A-list cast of asian actors. Andy Lau was once attached, and so was Chow Yun Fat. Unfortunately they had to drop out because of planning issues.
Tony Leung Chiu Wai will be Zhou Yu, you should recognize him from the HK Infernal Affairs (also remade as the shitty and oscar-winning The Departed), Hero and In the Mood for Love.
Takeshi Kaneshiro as Zhuge Liang, you should remember him as the japanese fighter at the end of Fearless. He also starred in a couple of Wong Kar Wai movies, which is great.
SOME GIRL as SOME GIRL WITHOUT A SILLY HIGH ENGLISH VOICE
I'm also a girl! Call me Miao Miao You
Look I'm Cao Cao and I will look awesome on your wall!
I am Zhou Yun and you will fear my spear of destiny!
As Gan Ning and a Japanese actor, I will be the most evil character in the movie even if it makes no sense at all!
Check out the Battle of Chibi in the old TV series too!

Now brothers, let us stand under the cherry tree and fap magically as we wait for this glorious movie to engulf us!
Takeshi Kaneshiro was also in House of Flying Daggers and The Returner. He's also Japanese but the ladies love him so he cannot be a bad guy - unless he was playing Sephiroth at which point the FFVII fangirls would simultaneously orgasm shifting the planet from its orbit and ending life as we know it.
I'm glad you know that, nilcam :)
He looks pretty good for a japanese guy in a HK movie. The Gan Ning dude looks waaaaay to japanese for the chinese market though :/
