IGN's Haze review: 4.5/10 and dev's response
Maurice Tan | 12:04 PM on 05.20.2008 35 comments

IGN has put their review up today/last night and they don't seem to like it very much. Read the thing here.

They say that the Nectar system makes the game too easy when you play on the Mantel side. Wasn't that kind of the point? To make the "dark side" of the corporate warmachine more effective and efficient? Well, apparently it makes the game really boring to play..

And what's worse, once you switch sides you apparently don't have a sense that the opposition uses it as well as you just did in the first half of the game. IGN also mentions shitty AI and the usual stuff that's always there if you want to whine about it.

Multiplayer seems to be good, while the graphics suck:

"The worst example of this has to be the visuals for the flamethrower, the Dragon de la Gente, which vomits a horrid cone of supposed flame that looks visually on par with what you'd find from the 386 PC days 15 years ago."

Ouch! I guess it didn't live up to expectations eh? Or maybe they didn't get enough ad moneyz.

Rob Yescombe responded to their review on some place, mentioning how GoldenEye got a 4/10 too. Yeah..

The only reason I cared about this game was the story, which they SAID would be awesome and deep. Without that, it's probably just another generic FPS. If this has already been posted, I blame Aerox.

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

And I will pass the blame onto Wardrox, because fuck that guy.

It's a shame that this is getting slated so much because it looks so awesome. I hope that the reviews don't reflect the actual game- like a lot of games I have where I think they have been rated at the wrong end of the spectrum.

The story's supposed to be pretty good while the game itself is 'meh'.

Here's a quote from the Onion A.V. Club review:

"Haze features a fairly sophisticated subtext, at least by videogame standards. It's a meditation on war, politics, propaganda, and even steroid culture. Pondering the various meanings of the game's title is, at times, more interesting than the game itself."

I'll be picking it up mostly for the CO-OP. Should at least be entertaining.

Should have had Hilary Goldstein write it, he would have given it a 10

Hil gives everything 10/10.

Ron Workman gives everything 11/10.

You know where the money goes, developers. Right here.

Gamershell has another review up, where they do mention the attempt at a good story but a lacking campaign to go alongside it.

Also: where the hell is the edit your blog option and the list of older posts to edit/make live?

This makes me feel really bad for them. I'm sure it has more potential than that, well, maybe. Either way I really don't have much respect for IGN.

Ugh. I am tired of these developers coming to the defense of their product if it gets poor reviews. If you made a crappy game, just acknowledge that and take the criticism like a man, so you can do better next time.

Haha! Who was actually excited about this game anyway? I played the demo and wow... That was a load of Badunkadunk.

Ok, honestly, I did get the sense of a great story. But with MGS4 level story right around the corner?

Smudging Haze between GTA4 and MGS4 was a bad idea. No way a new IP can compete with the heavy guys.

The developer claims great scores from Famitsu (acceptable) and an Italian PlayStation magazine (biased much?) as proof that the game's good? Please.

Just look at the screenshot above. Where the fuck is everything in the environment? Just looks poorly made to me.

I wish this was still coming out for 360, 'cause I'd love to get my hands on it and try it for myself. But, from what I've seen, I'm not really surprised by such a review at all. They make valid points, such as a weak story, weak gameplay, poor AI, etc. They offered real criticisms and backed up their arguments, can't fault 'em for that.

Honestly, I wanted this game to be good, hoping this and a few other titles would justify buying a PS3. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and everyone loses. (I'm still gonna hold onto that sliver of hope that the rest of the reviews will be good)

Oh, and who the hell gave Goldeneye a 4/10? Link?

This makes it even funnier. In this article, people are comparing HAZE to Crysis, with some fanboys saying Haze looks better.

Why didn't they include a picture or anything of their complaints? I wanted to see that "15 year old game flamethrower effect".
Fucking IGN.

In other news, making crappy games is a disturbing new trend as it seems developers want their own turn to whine about review scores.

Really, if even the story isn't there, which was their main selling point, then I suppose the game has totally failed.
