Konami has nothing to worry about
Princess Pwnage | 8:01 PM on 11.29.2007 6 comments

The latest new on GameSpot is that Konami reported that they need at least 1million copies sold on the first day to actually make a profit. Personally I think they have nothing to worry. I’m sure all of us who own PS3’s planned on buying the game as soon as it was announced. Furthermore since the game is most probably the last in the series I’m sure all Metal Gear Solid fans are anxious to find out how it will end.

I don't see this as being a very lucrative decision for Konami.

And, adding to what Nex said, there are a hell lot more Wii owners out there who would potentially purchase Super Mario Galaxy than there will be to purchase MGS4.

Why can't they sell any units on day 2? I think the statement is fucking stupid. I don't think they'll sell 1mil on day one, But I bet they'll sell more than enough to recoup their losses.

I believe that Konami has plenty to worry about. I don't think they'll hit their first-day target, and will likely have trouble reaching it for awhile after MGS4 hits.

Oh, I don't doubt that a few people will buy a system for this game, or already have, but I don't really get the vibe that they're positioned to do as well as they need to here. I wish them all the luck in the world, but I believe they're going to have a tough time of it just the same.

They probably won't hit the million on day 1. MGS 3 only sold about 220k on launch day in the US (400k in Japan, don't remember if they were simultaneous releases) and that was on a system that had multiple times the install base of the PS3. To date Snake Eater (plus subsistence) is somewhere around 4 million. MGS is a great game but I think people overestimate it's popularity with the majority of gamers. With all that said I still think MGS 4 will be the best selling MGS to date, one because it looks incredible and two because desperate Sony Fanboys who don't have any knowledge of the past MGS games will buy it because they've fought about it so much on the internet.
