Welcome to Podsumaki, Destructoid's unofficial fighting game podcast. Every Monday at 6:00PM Pacific Time our main hosts gather to discuss fighters.

Permanent Hosts:
KD Alpha, Wry Guy, de BLOO, RAB.
Guest Hosts: Listed below in the Podsumaki friend list.

We love taking on guests. If you love the fightans and wanna guest-host on the show get in contact with the hosts, or leave a comment expressing your interest. Specialists are in demand. Whatever series you're most in love with, let us know and we may be able to arrange an episode with you in mind. Do not worry if you can't make it Monday nights. The hosts may be able to find a suitable time if you think you can contribute.

Due to a low episode count there won't be a July Music Contest. Senisan and MatCD have won the June contest. We'll be re-vamping the rules come next time we do this.

Super Podsumaki Episode IV: X
Podsumaki | 11:33 PM on 05.05.2010 25 comments

Welcome back to the fightans talk, folks. Tonight we're apparently going to start a new contest for all the listeners. KD loves his fighting game music and wants to know if you do too. Six fighting game songs are playing through this episode as our intro, intermissions, and outro. Pay attention and take your shot, KD may give you a prize for getting good guesses. We'll be keeping a scoreboard at the bottom of the blog. The first person to guess a song gets the point for that song. You may only guess two songs per episode, so as to not steal the limelight for everyone else. Your points will add up over the course of the month. Person with the most points wins a prize. If KD cannot provide one, Wry Guy will.

In the interest of getting a better schedule we're going to push toward releasing the episodes earlier each time until we have a reasonable release date on Wednesday nights. If we can't make this happen expect Thursdays to be

@Solgrim, if you listen closely, I was talking specifically about Tekken. Also, no way are Doctor B. and Gon viable characters. Hakan and Dan can actually fight without resorting to farts and burps as attacks. Plus, Dan was meant as a fuck you to SNK. Gon is some random dinosaur to fill roster space.

You guys are retarded, the PC version of SF IV is great. And nobody knows any of your random fighting game arrange tracks. (only one I knew was already mentioned).

And actually all of Capcom's PC ports since after Lost Planet (it was the first cross platform game on their new tech, so a little rough) have been really well done. Everything BEFORE those, like the shitty Ubisoft PS2 to PC ports, and all the random shit Capcom ported to PC otherwise (did you know Mega Man Legends has a PC version?) is pretty fucked.

@KD: Considering how many tributes the company give eachother in their respective Versus games about eachother and consider Street Fighter has Dan and King of Fighters has Yuri, I'm pretty sure it's just friendly ribbing. From what I know Street Fighter 1 and Art of Fighting 1 had the same character designer, thus Ryo being so similar to Ryu.

From what I've heard and read Kevin is considered just as god-tier in Japan as elsewhere.
And while top-tier characters obviously also see a lot of use over there, you can find a couple of people who main almost every character in any game, no matter how awful people think they are (I'm under the impression that Gato is one of the, if not the most commonly used character in garou btw).
Though I admittedly still have not seen someone main Sean in 3S. :f

Also, podsumaki is the best podcast on dtoid atm.

@Wryguy: I am disappoint... that you give SNK no credit for holding down the fort of the fighting game genre after Capcom left in the early 2000s. In the time Capcom was away, SNK released KoF 2002, 2003, XI; the Maximum Impact Series; NeoGeo Battle Colisseum; Kof 98 UM; KoF 2002 UM; and the GBA KoF EX series. KoF EX 2 is my favorite handheld fighter of all time, surpassing even the NeoGeo Color games.

@Nilcam: For the record KOF 2003 is easily one of my favorite 2D fighting games, I wrote about what a good thing the Maximum Impact series was, and KOF 98UM and 2k2UM are regarded as masterpieces overseas right. That said, over here SNK wasn't making any impact on the scene. SNK itself was probably one of the more serious victims of piracy considering many of their Neogeo fighters were already pirated and being played with giving money to the company as soon as they were released. KOF 2003 was hacked and available online immediately. That's how I even learned about the game.

Fact is nobody was buying. That's why Maximum Impact 3 was discontinued and KOF XIII will be the last KOF game if it doesn't receive sales. I'm only just now considering SNK and being ready to make a comeback and bring people back into the SNK side.

Trust me, I love SNK. My involvement in Podsumaki, the King of Fighters Love Letter, and my jumping on to the staff of Orochinagi.com are all because I want to help SNK succeed as a company. Still, I don't think the company is on steady enough financial footing right now. I'm hoping KOF XIII gives them a solid cash cow.

Also, KOF EX2 isn't developed by SNK. I think that's Takara. KOF 2002 was developed by Eolith, though I get some conflicting stories on how involved the original SNK staff members were under the name Playmore. That's a point of big interest to me actually, because I hope to understand the exact situation the KOF series was undergoing during KOF 2001, and how it might have affected the storyline.

To me EX2 is just a poor man's KOF 2000. I might be a little personally biased against it because KOF 99 and 2000 for me have incredible soundtracks and it's hard for me to listen to those soundtracks GBA-ified in KOF EX and EX 2. This is just the opinion game, though. From a technical standpoint KOF EX2 is easily one of the most impressive GBA fighters.

@WryGuy: I know of your love for SNK and I didn't intend my comment as a call out. I have always thought of SNK as part of the guard of that time period probably because that's when I really began to transition to being a fan. I was in college during the fighting game boom and spent most of my time playing SFII with the occasional trip to the NeoGeo while waiting for my turn on SF. Samurai Shodown II was the first game of theirs that I loved. After Capcom left, I found myself buying lots of SNK games for the Dreamcast - Last Blade 2, King of Fighters 99 Evolution, Mark of the Wolves as well as importing the other KoF games on the system. SNK was the most prolific 2D fighter on the market at that point so I probably overstate their significance.

@nilcam: I know you wasn't calling me out. I was just making my stance clear on why I try to downplay SNK's influence during the dead years of fighters. They were a guard for me personally as well, as SNK is the company that blossomed my enthusiasm for fighters in a period where nobody else was really making anything.
