With the release of Halo 3, I decided to get back into the world of XBL, a lavish but cruel world I once spent most of my time in. I knew fully what the hell I was getting myself into and I didn't want to deal with it really, but hey. Its worth a shot,no?
By the first round of Team Slayer, I recalled the absolute shit one can take when even attempting to communicate. I started talking to my buddy Rob about not being on here for awhile, then some guy from out of no where goes:
XBL 'tard 1: "Oh my.. OH MY FUCKING GAWD IS THAT A GIRL!?!? DUDE OMFG!"
XBL 'tard 2:"HOLY SHIT I CAN'T FUCKING BELIEVE IT!!! HEY HEY CAN YOU SPEAK AGAIN!?!"
Yep, from then on I learned not to open my mouth unless need be with voice. And that was only my first lesson. After a few plays I recall the racist, misogynistic, make-no-sense screaming of the wonderful population provided by Xbox Live. Hearing 12 year olds like this turned me off so much... and yet the whole time, I'm actually enjoying myself. Of course this whole time I was being picked on by some ass in the middle of nowhere for having ovaries.... and yet it hurt so good.
It just goes to show XBL is sort of like that fucked up loser cousin of one always has in their family; you may be forced to love him at one point, but eventually you'll embrace the times he gives you.
You know it's funny, my Xbox Live experiences really haven't been all that bad. I've been on Gears for the past week quite a lot and have only had limited experience with 12 year old idiots who think saying "Go play Viva Pinata" is an original, brand new witticism.
Most of the time, discussion is kept to a minimum and we do our damn jobs. Of course, I'm aware that the Halo crowd is known to be typically different.
@taumpytears: Haha, I think it is with a slight edit XD
@Jim: See, if someone hit me with that insult, I'm so slow, I'd take it as a suggestion or compliment, lol. But you bring up a good point: the game usually reflects on the people you play with on XBL. Of course, 2395830834058 just so happen to be playing Halo 3 right now, so I'm at a higher risk of meeting douchebags, than say Gears.
I really like Halo 3 online, but as soon as I got into the 20's in Team Slayer, anytime I had a bad game I would have these people telling me that I was fucking horrible and I sucked and stuff like that. Or people screaming into the microphone every 5 minutes why what just happened was "bullshit". My problem is some people want to win waaay too much. I imagine they don't lead very fulfilling lives, so I won't hold it against them.
In other games, though, like Aegis Wing of all games, I have found the people to be awesome and make the experience much more fun than playing solo.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
about me
I LOVE college. I'm a fiend for fried rice and rhythm games. I have dreams about Tekken and lately, Modern Warfare 2 these dreams involve being on the *wrong* side of the "No Russian" mission. Metal Gear Solid 4 made me laugh, cry and pee. I also consider it the greatest game I've ever played. I'll understand if you don't agree with that. Go DUKES!
Destructoid is an independently-run publication forged by our love of video games and the gaming community's need of accountable enthusiast press living the dream since March 16, 2006
