About Me
After a long and unnoticeable time away from Destructoid, I have returned to blog once again. Now, to lay down the law.

This is my blog. I don't care if you agree with it or not. It's not for your benefit. It's for mine. It's to express my ideas through a medium so they don't bottle up and result in me climbing a clock tower with some form of weaponry and begin hailing bullets down to the unsuspecting civilians below.

Now, down to the nitty gritty. Some of my earliest gaming memories are on the Sega, playing Sonic the Hedgehog and complaining when I got to the water level which required you to collect air bubbles to survive. I then got violently shoved into the world of Playstation and Nintendo64. I’ve always stood by the philosophy that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) is my mother, and either Crash Team Racing (PS1) or Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace (PS1) is my father. I could never quite tell. Firstly, Ocarina of Time is undoubtedly, in my mind, the greatest game that has ever spawned from the hands of man. It kept me warm on cold nights, taught me almost everything I know, and still keeps an eye on me today. It is my mother. Secondly, Crash Team Racing and The Phantom Menace were both amazing games that I played for hours non-stop, and I’m not really sure which contributed more into creating me. One of them is my father, but it remains a mystery. I had some good times with Pokemon Red on my Gameboy before and around this time, which entertained me for years. I moved onto PS2 (the days of GTA: San Andreas were truly amazing), Xbox, and then to Xbox360 which I enjoyed some good years on, and then I finally became primarily a PC gamer. I’ve got nothing against any console or platform, PC just works better for me.

Honestly though, I'll be using this blog as my "must try and write about something everyday so I don't become rusty" thing. I write for a gaming website that will be launching soon, and it's almost necessary to have a personal blog in which you can keep up your writing skillz, so bare with me while I ramble.

Cheers.

If only we had stopped at the Nintendo 64 and Playstation

Regardless of the amazing new things we can do nowadays with physics, graphics and all that jazz, life would have been grand if we had just stopped before people actually tried to make things realistic. Today we have flame wars when graphics are bad, when physics are bad, when sound quality aint that great, if voice acting is laughable, and so forth. It got me thinking about the good old days, when absolutely none of that mattered. Yep, those were simpler times.

We'll start off with Asteroids. Look at that masterpiece. If it were somehow manifested into a physical human form, i honestly think i would get it drunk and do terrible, unspeakable things to it. Here is how the game went down: You are basically called into existance for no apparent reason. You find out you're a small 'A' framed space ship that can travel across the universe in less than 2 and a half seconds, and there is a constant low beep sound spanning across space. Suddenly, asteroids. Rather than avoiding them and continuing to do what ever the hell you would do, you decide to elimite them all. You do that, but then there are more. Confused and enraged, you continue to blast your way to freedom. Eventually another life form is called into existance, emitting a high pitched frequency. Rather than attempting to befriend the other spacecraft and possibly gain an allie, you see him as foe, and destroy him.

Eventually you find out the bitter truth... a sudden self-realisation. Why are you fighting? There will always be more... and more... The only emotions you have felt in your short existance is pain, and anger. You continue to fight despite this, until you eventually die.

See now here's the thing. You couldn't even win at this game. You play until you die. There was no storyline, no plot. The graphics are considered horrid today, and really, it's not even in depth. Despite all that, it is still one of the greatest games of all time, alongside with Pac Man and Space Invaders. I love it.

Eventually things started to get more in depth, and upping the graphics to suit the game. But honestly, everyone knew they couldn't make 'REALISTIC' at that time, so no one cared. Nintendo 64 and PS1 was the perfect time to stop. I never really noticed a console war between the two platforms. Nintendo had great games, and so did the PS1. I didn't think anything else of it. Just about all the games on Nintendo64 i loved, and i can nearly say the same for PS1. But nowadays with the xbox360, PS3 and Wii, i honestly have to say its 'hit and miss'. If i had a time machine, i would go back and destroy research buildings for next gen gaming.

It's a slow night on Dtoid, thought i'd give it some life. Cheers.

Mario 64 is a perfect 3D game, despite it's polygonal glory. Call me crazy, but if you had changed PS1 to PS2, I wouldn't have minded a whole lot if the future was just 64 and PS2.

I's take BioShock over Asteroids any day.

64 bits FTW. I also miss sprites.

This whole graphics thing has just spun out of control, it used to be schoolyard bit wars, and now it's flame wars over which does what better, blablabla.

I love the new disagea, why? Sprites.

I'm all for the rejection of "realistic" graphics, but I can't say I wish that PS1/N64 days were back. Even at the time they were first released, I found many N64 games to be ugly to the point that I just didn't want to play them.

And it's not like gameplay has changed a lot since those days. Other than the occasional motion control-only title, most games today play exactly like N64/PS1 games.

I have to ask, do you think that maybe you're being blinded by nostalgia? When you play N64 games now, do you really think they look better than lets say, Smash Bros Brawl or Super Mario Galaxy?

If so, I guess you've got the DS to keep you happy. Plenty of N64/PS1-looking games there.

So what you're saying is that you hate the Dreamcast and you wish it was never born. I will curse your name to the grave, son!!! ;)

Also, Geometry Wars > Asteroids > Hemorrhoids

He also hates the PS2, which means he hates Ico, Odin Sphere, GrimGrimoire, Persona, and a crapload of other games with unrealistically beautiful graphics.

I will also curse his name to the grave!!!

In some sense I agree... that n64/ps1 generation was the greatest gen imo b/c of how beatifully different the games were from each other. I mean there was a realy tangible diff between a 64 game and a ps1 game but they were both awesome. However Idon't think its too late to harness that energy in this gen if the consumer would actually support the titles which were more unique

How can you not think that Geometry Wars is just a better version of Asteroids?

Someone is wearing their retro-goggles at night.

I hate that someone invented cars, 'cos some cars are not that great.
I wish we all had to ride in horse and cart cos then no one would have to worry about how some cars only have a top speed of 90mph, or have really bad mileage, or don't have cup holders. Life would be simpler if we all just had to ride in horse and cart. Plus it would be loads more fun! [Except for all the horse crap]

What about the Saturn? That was that generation! It had all sorts of great fighters and imports, and nobody loved it...
Also, artistic vision is better than photorealistic graphics.

I hear you about the Saturn. That system was great if you had importing capabilities.

Just because you didn't have any preference for which side to take, doesn't mean that the debates weren't as heated as they are today. The only difference between those wars and todays are the internet. So you hear everyone's side all at once. The shield of anonymity keeps those people from being swayed in one way or another. As opposed to yesteryear where the debates were more so done in person among friends.

I'm glad to see all these Dreamcast lovers here!

Really though, I can't stand pure nostalgic googles (like pure pre-SNES retro). Going back and playing Pac-Man, Asteroids, and Space Invaders all the time is not fun.

That's not true, every time I see a galaga/pacman cabinet or cocktail table I can't resist my urge to play them and I have a blast.

I love a large amount of old retro games, and here in Florida, I can hit up Disney Quest, where they have an entire floor filled with retro arcade cabinets.

There are some games I can't get enough of like Mappy, Discs of Tron, Dragon's Lair, and Donkey Kong, but a lot of other games feel very stale now. My last comment was just noting that "I don't know how people who only play retro games still do it".

No console wars? Dude , Genesis kids VS SNES kids had much more epic proportions than today fanboys, and I really don't think we should have stopped at the PS1 , actually , the PS1/64 generation is the worst one in my opinion ...( I mean , the defining titles , like Mario 64 and FFVII just don't hold up to SMB3 , Sonic 2 , A Link to The Past and so on ..), but people get old and nostalgia strikes , that's normal ...

It's most likely that i am blinded by nostalgia. All my greatest video game memories come from when i was a youngin. And i have to admit, i can't deny brawl of being awesome. There are of some good games these days, no doubt about it. But it seems there were so many more back in ye old days.

@Autumn
Heh, point well proven. I honestly have nothing to say to that, well played sir.

ah, it was such a simpler time then...

i used to be all about hating next gen systems (the time frame on this means i hated PS2, xbox, and gamecube) but once i embraced staples of the n64/ps1 era like mario, link, gta, and mgs on these newer systems, i just had to keep going

but fuck xbox/xbox 360
