Zelda A Link to the Past
Zelda Majora's Mask
Team Fortress 2
Persona 3
Super Mario World
Super Mario Bros 3
Stepmania
Chrono Trigger

Check out my deviantART, I do videogame stuff from time to time. But mostly I'm working on getting a graphic novel published.

Sonic's new RPG destined for fail
Phoenix Gamma | 4:03 PM on 01.11.2008 10 comments

I've been too generous to Sonic.

"Maybe Shadow the Hedgehog will be fun..."
"Sonic Riders could be neat..."
"How bad can Sonic on the 360 be?"

Luckily, I never bought any of those games, but they did make me facepalm. Hard.

So when Bioware announced a Sonic RPG awhile back, I groaned. Just drop the fucking mascot for...10 years...then revive him after you've learned a thing or two.

Bioware decided to take things the fangame route this time. Titled "Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood", I'm expecting fursonas on par with Marcus the Hedgehog.

But that's not worries me, what guaranteed that the game wasn't even worth pirating was the description:

Sonic Chronicles will be made by BioWare (Knights of the Old Republic) for the Nintendo DS, and it looks like a brand new era for the hedgehog, one full of engaging story, and one where the hedgehog slows things down a bit so you really get inside the narrative. Yes, you exchange eye-popping speed for an immersive experience.

Basically, Sonic '06 was such a deep experience that they just wanted to take the bestiality even further. Expect lots of Rule 34 and SUPER DARK STORY.

Anyways, the new Nintendo Power has more on the game (because so many people outside of fanboys read that magazine, right?), or you can check the little tidbit on the game here:

Go nuts. I know Sega has.

They jumped the shark with Sonic and Knuckles. Who wants to plug a game into another game? And if not then, then definitely by Sonic CD. When they added Charmy Bee. Charmy Bee? Seriously, Sega?

Slowing Sonic down and giving him a deep story is like replacing all the guns in Halo with ice cream. I mean, I like ice cream as much as the next guy, but somehow I don't imagine I'll take down more that 3 grunts - TOPS - with a lethal brain freeze.

Then again, it would be hilarious.

I'll give a chance because I trust Bioware.

I've never liked a BioWare game. And from what I can tell, their strengths as a developer don't match Sonic's strengths as a series at all.

I know what you're thinking "Sonic games has strengths?" Yeah, the used to. Early Sonic games has simplicity, great "Mousetrap" style level design, and were probably the best "speed run" games out there, at least for casual to moderately dedicated gamers.

I don't see how that gameplay philosophy can match with BioWare's at all.

But I'm still hoping.

At this point, Sonic's just a 'black sheep' anyway. NO ONE expects any sort of quality out of a Sonic Game these days. Yet, with Sonic becoming more and more story oriented since Sonic Adventure 2, this just may be the next step for SEGA's mascot.

It could be interesting, or it could be epic FAIL...the only way to keep this sort of game inline with the Sonic name is to have levels where you run around ala 2D games, and then the boss fights are RPG styled.

That would be cool...

the whole reason i thought sonic was cool was because of his awesome speed, and then they take that away from him???

isn't his superSONIC speed what makes him Sonic?

i call FAIL!

just create another RPG on the DS with a turtle if you want it to go slow... but don't slow down Sonic! its like putting a lada-engine in a ferrari... sure its still a ferrari on the outside but without the speed...

Here are some details on the game from Gonintendo.

Nothing about it sounds bad, but neither does anything sound particularly good.

As long as you guys bought Sonic Rush for the DS, since it was the best Sonic game in years, you can bitch all you want. However, if you haven't bought it yet, then you need to STFU and go play Sonic Rush right now.

Also, I am a slight BioWare fan - so I still have hope for the Sonic RPG. Even so, I'll wait until the game is released to get off the fence and pick my side, thanks.
