Maddox slams PS3 and 360, Wii is the best thing to happen to games
Phoenix Gamma | 12:44 PM on 01.16.2009 29 comments

I love Maddox. Sure, I'm probably too old to find this guy funny anymore, but I've got his book, The Alphabet of Manliness sitting on my desk right here, and it's one of the few books that I ever read for fun.

Here, Maddox makes some pretty bold claims, states his game of the year (World Ends With You. Wait, really?) and talks about why people need to ease up on FPS and sports games. It's like I'm listening to myself talk, but way manlier.

I forgot he still existed.

Wow, after actually reading the whole thing I think he had some really good points in there.

I have discovered an update to his best page thanks to this. Ta.

Maddox makes some good points, but he is incorrect about the FPS craze. It was Nintendo that make the FPS genre popular on consoles with Goldeneye for the N64 and the genre became big on PCs after Doom, not Quake. That's why so many games were called Doom clones and not Quake clones.

The part about the 360 being a PC was pretty accurate though.

Good points, see where he's coming from except calling the Wii the best thing to happen to gaming since the NES. He then cites Metacritic instead of the sales for how successful the games are. Also, a hint of hypocrisy when he criticizes the Xbox and PS3 for having mass-marketed bullshit and hails the Wii as his overlord. Maddox is awesome I've been reading his site for over three years and own his book, but I don't really agree with him on gaming.
dmgi's Destructoid Blog
Also, I was surprised at his lack of criticism towards Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

Haven't been to that manly and devilishly handsome pirates site in a while, guess it's time to see what he's been up to. I'm reading that interview now as well, thanks for sharing. Maddox also loves Ikaruga :D

I have every game on his recommended list. Gunstar Super Heroes is lost somewhere in my room though.

"The Wii is the best thing to happen to gaming since the original NES. And if you don't like the Wii, then this is really going to piss you off: Nintendo has single-handedly saved the video game industry."

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Hold on a second... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

How has Nintendo moved gaming forward with the Wii? They've managed to replace pressing buttons with remote movements that don't trigger 25% of the time? Huge innovation there. Last time I checked it didn't invent any genres.

I agree Sony and Microsoft aren't really pushing anything forward but Nintendo has taken a step backwards.

Really though what does he want? Anything in first person will be labeled as a "FPS with" swords or whatever elements. Anything in 3rd person will be labeled as Adventure / TPS / Platformer / Action.

I'd love a new genre but hell it's all been done. If creating a new genre was possible they would have done it by now. At best people are mixing genres.

I hope I'm wrong and that there are new undiscovered genres. Really though everything I see can fit into the existing genre labels.
whiteskwirl's Destructoid Blog
I certainly don't prefer flailing my arms about over pressing a button and moving a stick with my thumbs. When it comes to playing video games, especially for long periods, you want as little body movement as possible so you don't tire out. Repetitive movements hurt your body as it is, so lessening that as much as possible is a plus.

So I'll still take a controller over the wiimote for a boxing game any day, unless I'm playing a mini game with friends.

"On the Wii, we not only see a representation of every genre of gaming, but we see new genres that didn't exist before the Wii came along (surgery, cooking, balance, etc)."

while i agree with most of his points, and it's clear that he's what you could call a hardcore gamer, most of what he says about the wii is pretty much invalidated by the above sentence.

cooking? balance? this is minigame territory, and the surgery genre? it's basically a videogame version of operation. these are fun games, yes, but i can't say with a straight face that they represent progression for the gaming industry.

don't get me wrong, the motion controller is a legitimate step forward for gaming in general, even though it's operation and application has not really been perfect so far, and i do have some respect for nintendo in that respect, but the wii has ushered in the new era of casual/commercial gaming which is a step backward really.

anyways, thanks for posting this, i am a long time maddox fan, bought the book etc. and i'd have never seen this otherwise.

Trauma Center: New Blood is amazingly fun. People will just sit down and start playing it with you too.
flamesofchaos's Destructoid Blog
I actually agree with the guy and it's true. He cites metacritic because it's an aggregation of what the industry thinks what the best games are on a console.

The Wii remote does open up a lot of genres successfully on a console like the point and click adventure games. Also a lot of smaller games can thrive and survive on the Wii just like niche games.

And here is my favorite part of the whole interview that a lot of people should listen to:

"MyGamer: Which general batch of gamers has been pissing you off lately? Any fanboys that need to shut the hell up?

I'm really fucking tired of people who play Xbox 360 and PS3 calling themselves "hardcore gamers." Look at the list of top 10 games on 360 up above. See anything in common? Those are the games that most people play on 360, and with the exception of Braid, they also happen to be the most popular, most heavily marketed, and most consumer-oriented games in the industry. It'd be like someone eating a meal at McDonalds and saying "I'm a foodie!" No, you're not. If you're into movies, you don't go out and see Jurassic Park and call it a day. You try to see movies that try new and interesting things. The types of movies that only someone who has watched thousands of movies could appreciate for doing something unique.

Similarly, if you're a hardcore gamer, you should be looking for new gaming experiences. You shouldn't be satisfied playing the same old mass market games. Not that these games are bad, but they're not for "hardcore" gamers any more than McDonalds is for hardcore foodies. If you're a hardcore gamer, go out and play Katamari Damacy, track down an old copy of Radiant Silvergun on Saturn, or play an indie game like World of Goo. These are the experiences that move gaming forward. Not blockbuster sequels like Halo 3."

If you don't realize that Maddox is trolling, then you deserve to be trolled
mistic's Destructoid Blog
Well he might be trolling but he sure has some good points :-)

I realised that whole 360/PC thing recently as well when I just upgraded my PC, ever since I did that, I stopped playing on my 360... got L4D on PC, COD:W@W on PC, and finally I can play decent strategy games again! jeeeeeeeej!
psycho terror's Destructoid Blog
there's nothing lamer than dismissing a valid opinion as trolling.

on this site it seems that anyone bashing the wii is called out as a troll, and anyone defending the wii is called out as a troll. stop doing it. it only shows you're either too lazy to, or incapable of supporting your own opinion.
DanGale's Destructoid Blog
What can I say? The man speaks the truth.
pedrovay2003's Destructoid Blog
I know he's being really trollish, but I kind of agree with Maddox. Many people may hate Nintendo for it, but oh well for them.
