Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
The part about the 360 being a PC was pretty accurate though.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Hold on a second... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
How has Nintendo moved gaming forward with the Wii? They've managed to replace pressing buttons with remote movements that don't trigger 25% of the time? Huge innovation there. Last time I checked it didn't invent any genres.
I agree Sony and Microsoft aren't really pushing anything forward but Nintendo has taken a step backwards.
Really though what does he want? Anything in first person will be labeled as a "FPS with" swords or whatever elements. Anything in 3rd person will be labeled as Adventure / TPS / Platformer / Action.
I'd love a new genre but hell it's all been done. If creating a new genre was possible they would have done it by now. At best people are mixing genres.
I hope I'm wrong and that there are new undiscovered genres. Really though everything I see can fit into the existing genre labels.
So I'll still take a controller over the wiimote for a boxing game any day, unless I'm playing a mini game with friends.
while i agree with most of his points, and it's clear that he's what you could call a hardcore gamer, most of what he says about the wii is pretty much invalidated by the above sentence.
cooking? balance? this is minigame territory, and the surgery genre? it's basically a videogame version of operation. these are fun games, yes, but i can't say with a straight face that they represent progression for the gaming industry.
don't get me wrong, the motion controller is a legitimate step forward for gaming in general, even though it's operation and application has not really been perfect so far, and i do have some respect for nintendo in that respect, but the wii has ushered in the new era of casual/commercial gaming which is a step backward really.
anyways, thanks for posting this, i am a long time maddox fan, bought the book etc. and i'd have never seen this otherwise.
Trauma Center: New Blood is amazingly fun. People will just sit down and start playing it with you too.
The Wii remote does open up a lot of genres successfully on a console like the point and click adventure games. Also a lot of smaller games can thrive and survive on the Wii just like niche games.
And here is my favorite part of the whole interview that a lot of people should listen to:
"MyGamer: Which general batch of gamers has been pissing you off lately? Any fanboys that need to shut the hell up?
I'm really fucking tired of people who play Xbox 360 and PS3 calling themselves "hardcore gamers." Look at the list of top 10 games on 360 up above. See anything in common? Those are the games that most people play on 360, and with the exception of Braid, they also happen to be the most popular, most heavily marketed, and most consumer-oriented games in the industry. It'd be like someone eating a meal at McDonalds and saying "I'm a foodie!" No, you're not. If you're into movies, you don't go out and see Jurassic Park and call it a day. You try to see movies that try new and interesting things. The types of movies that only someone who has watched thousands of movies could appreciate for doing something unique.
Similarly, if you're a hardcore gamer, you should be looking for new gaming experiences. You shouldn't be satisfied playing the same old mass market games. Not that these games are bad, but they're not for "hardcore" gamers any more than McDonalds is for hardcore foodies. If you're a hardcore gamer, go out and play Katamari Damacy, track down an old copy of Radiant Silvergun on Saturn, or play an indie game like World of Goo. These are the experiences that move gaming forward. Not blockbuster sequels like Halo 3."
I realised that whole 360/PC thing recently as well when I just upgraded my PC, ever since I did that, I stopped playing on my 360... got L4D on PC, COD:W@W on PC, and finally I can play decent strategy games again! jeeeeeeeej!
on this site it seems that anyone bashing the wii is called out as a troll, and anyone defending the wii is called out as a troll. stop doing it. it only shows you're either too lazy to, or incapable of supporting your own opinion.
