An amazing concept has dawned upon you, gamer friend. Or maybe a news tidbit you just heard through the grapevine has tingled your Spidey Sense. What to do, what to do? "Oh yea! I'll post it on the Dtoid Clogs (aka Community Blogs), what a grand idea."
Hold on a second, Mr. Matlock... Before you attempt to flood the existing vast ocean that is the Clogs, you might want to consider a couple points. The majority of the Dtoid Community feel that the blogs have been infested. Heaping, intoxicating portions of Copypasta and filler ranting (maybe to you, this here post) is the word. To avoid such bannable offenses and future flame wars, I suggest the following options. Take heed:
a) FORUMS - "Look, I made a picture." Look, there's a forum thread for that and plenty of people will still see it and respond. Old forum threads get revived on a daily basis, don't worry. "My girlfriend thinks I'm annoying." I think that one's for the Social Lounge. In the forums. A lot of Clog posts are time-sensitive, they're posted at that specific moment for a reason. When you push quality stuff down, they die. Less people read them. Boooo. Small talk and lack of originality and thought is more suitable for the forums, keep it out of Clogs.
b) DAILY POSTS - I haven't seen much use of this option. If you really need to dish out that Copypasta or mention something with little or no significance to Dtoid, why not combine all of those gems into one daily post. I prefer my food poisoning all at once and not in incremental doses. Wow, amazing. Do it.
c) TIPS - Stop trying to be the next big Dtoid Deep Throat. You've already submitted the tip, the editors make good and on-the-fly decisions about what is front page worthy or who should be credited for breaking information. You will never be Joe Burling, tehuberone or Namelessted, that is simply unpossible.
c) OTHER BLOGS - IGN, 1UP and other gaming sites/communities have blogs more suitable for your content. Dtoid is about originality and not sucking, let's keep it that way.
d) GET YOUR OWN INTERNETS - Godaddy.com, less than $45 a year to grab a domain name and to host your blog. That's less than 13 cents a day (imagine a Sally Struthers sad panda face). You have it all to yourself and you make Dtoid less sucky, yaaayyy.
e) DON'T SUCK - Please. Thank you.
I know I sound like a dick right now or perhaps I'm coming on too strong. You can do whatever the hell you want, it's a free internets and Dtoid welcomes anyone who wants to be a part of this amazing community. But these points are common topics among fellow members that put a lot of love and time into Dtoid.
Yea, I know it's just a Beta. Enhanced friend, points and group systems are well on their way (you go, Niero). For a while now, I've considered writing this post. I've held back thinking positively about the posts improving with time. Unfortunately, I've grown very weary of reading the fruits of boredom and attention whoring.
Does it really matter what people post on their personal blogs here? Seriously? Like, that much? You got the choice of reading it or ignoring it, that's the glory of the internet.
not that I don't agree, either, or think this is directed at me or my friends, or give a shit, but dude, lay off the holier than thou bs like jim said. its a free country.
I agree and I don't. I post once in a while when I see something that I think is important, or worthy of comments. I have my own website, but I also love the people of Dtoid, so I like to share some of my experiences and thoughts. I only have posted about 7-8 posts, but these are posts that I thought were interesting to me. Sorry if they do not meet some unwritten standard... :(
There is no standard. I think it's okay to talk about Peter Moore going to EA on your blog, but if all you say is the news bit, it's not so interesting. But, if you post the news bit along with your opinion, that's more interesting to me; I'd rather comment on somebody else's opinion rather than the news they're posting.
But I do agree with Jim Sterling - you don't have to click on the post if you don't want to. Just like yesterday, when I realized that I don't have to watch AOTS. Thank god!
BluFire, a majority of the news posts are pure copypastas with no opinions attached whatsoever. Thus, my mention of the Tips option.
Jim, I know exactly what you mean. I was actually about to not post this at all because it's pretty much a repeat of Dyslixec's post from a while back. I just wanted to heat things up a little bit. I give second chances and read almost every blog post even if it's someone's posts that I usually dislike. I can't ignore anyone, it's not in my nature. This has been the voice of many people on Dtoid, I'm just the temporary mouthpiece.
I kind of agree with you, Phist, in that I do see a lot of pointless cblogs come through which may be more suitable as forum posts. The problem is... how do you define what should be in the forum and what should be in a cblog?
It does suck that the good cblogs tend to drown amongst a sea of random thoughts and bitching, but perhaps that's actually a really good thing. It shows that the cblogs are thriving.
Perhaps if this trend continues, Niero will create different cblog genres. Perhaps there could be a review cblog section, news cblog section, general gaming cblog section, and personal cblog section.
More cblogs = more traffic = more money = better for all of us. You rock, but not enough to steal Jade Raymond from me. ;)
Drown amongst a sea of random thoughts and bitching? Isn't that what blogs are for? I assume that what you meant by that was mostly bitching rather than random thoughts.
is there a way to do a personal AMD a gaming section so we can have both without like he said having actually news worthy blogs stay up and crap like wiisucks new alter-ego fillin the tubes with 43 posts a day about how everyone hates him and he doesn't know why. that way everyone is happy.
I guess my first could/should be a forum post, but blogs look pretty. Don't worry though, as I for one, won't be clogging the Community blog arteries with a blog every hour on the hour.
goddamit bricfa, I was on fire and then you just make me look like a total ass. nm phist. im on board. angels, considering his actual post, it is truly epic. I fucking hate being wrong.
Who I'm kidding... I'm still new. But yeah, I feel phist on this one a little but. If the idea BuckF1tches brought up came to light (different cblogs), that would be sweet. I would back it.
people should just use vox.com or blogger.om or livejournal.com or their regular stuff, and clog only the gaming stuff. that's what I do. Shit, I have a myspace and a facebook too. It's really not hard to do. I hope I haven't been over whelming the clogs, but i feel i've been writing good stuff. i can only think of a few people (some kid name rationa..., awe nevermind) who have been screwing with the clogs.
Then again, I guess with the DToid PAX contest going on, I could see the flood of cblogs... and of this blog in general since it's pretty well formatted and whatnot.
great post Phist, sometimes I pass on the Cblogs simply because I dont want to wade through a bunch of copypasta in order to get to something good, like this
I know the guidelines aren't really set in stone or anything, but IMHO, community blog posts should, at a minimum:
1. Be game related
2. Follow standard front page format
3. Include original material or commentary
I haven't made any blog posts yet, because I can only manage one or two of those at a time so far. I also think I should get an avatar first. I just wish others exercised similar self-control.
i agree with this fully. and yes he does have balls for posting it. jim sterling, as much as this is open, there'd still like to be some control. keep some of the stupidity out, go to the forums and post a useless post if its that important to you. don't come to the blogs and PUSH DOWN everyone elses interesting stories.
this has been neglected for far too long, and mr. widescreen definately points it out perfectly. anyways, just have some respect for some of the people that HARDLY EVER POST and only do when they make good ones. and what do you know? they get pushed down by these stupid posts.
mainly it bothers me because i'm the type of person who never writes blogs, and when i do, they get pushed down. and it makes you think, "what's the point?" we shouldn't have that here at destructoid. anyways, just have some respect.
I'll go ahead and agree with you, Phist. The aforementioned problems are the exact reason that I have yet to post anything on my blog: I'm not going to post until I have time to write something I'm proud of. (Mind you, I have something BIG in the works.)
I would say that I'm even more critical of these suspect blog posts than you are. I would go so far as to say that I think commentary on gaming news often times doesn't belong in the community blogs. You have an opinion on a news story? There's a comment section on the front page... put it there.
I understand everyone wants to voice their opinion, but there are plenty of places to do that (The comment sections, forums, and livejournal immediately come to mind). I believe the community blogs should really be a place where original content thrives. Do some of your own real-life Matlockery and write about it, make some artwork and write about it, make a video, tell the Dtoid community a funny story, share a clever anecdote-- these are ways to make an interesting blog. The editors’ personal blogs are generally spot-on in this regard; Virtualgirl's blog is another that I would consider consistently excellent.
I’m as big a proponent of free speech as anyone, but, until there is a rating system or some way to ensure that the “cream rises to the top,” as members of a community, we should respect those that are really trying to write interesting things and not drown their posts in a sea of filth. If you want to exercise your right to free speech, post all you want! But, please, try to consolidate it all into one blog entry. This isn’t about silencing people, it’s about obeying the Destructoid creedo—“Don’t suck!”
very good post, funny and well thought out, yet not offensive or sprite crushing (its easy yo point out names and start a 'effing massive flame war), but funny how when dyslixec did this he got flammed to hell and back, yet people seem to be taking a more mature stand to your blog post, baffles me tbh. or has the whole thing simple gotten worse and worse that people are now comming to term with what dyslixec was saying, and now apprechate your point more? hmmm i dunno....
Look at my im Phist I like to tell people in the webs what to do cause I LUVE ME SOME POWA!
I posted about dirty dancing the game and added some vids and pictures and you attack me. http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/BlueWolf72/dirty-dancing-i-cant-wait-to-bump-n-grind--36138.phtml
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
But I do agree with Jim Sterling - you don't have to click on the post if you don't want to. Just like yesterday, when I realized that I don't have to watch AOTS. Thank god!

Bahamut, it's a conspiracy, I tell you.

Lol.

Oh and blogs look prettier than the forums.

Niero will bring blogs out of Beta in due time. He hears the cries of his peoples.

Bartles and James appreciates your support.
