Fuck this boss. Fuck this boss up his fucking ass.
I finally finished Crysis tonight with one of the most infuriating final boss fights of recent memory. Luckily I remembered this month's monthly musings topic and decided to share my frustrations with anyone who would listen.
This boss uses a tried and true tactic for enraging me: taking away control. He shoots a freeze ray that renders you totally immobile and defenseless for about 10 seconds, during which time any damage whatsoever will shatter and kill you.
I think this is poor game design for two reasons. One, it's a cheap tactic to artificially increase difficulty. Two, it punishes the player, something that a videogame should never do (Except arguably in multiplayer for being an asshole).
I've seen this in a ton of other games as well, although the only one I can specifically remember right now is Lost Planet, when you get knocked down and have to watch a painfully long animation where your character slowly gets back up.
Whatever variation it is, taking control away from me always pisses me off, and will normally elicit something along the lines of
"FUCKING SHITBALLS, MOVE YOU MOTHERFUCKER!!!".
I believe games should revolve around rewarding players. There should always be incentives for playing well and persevering, not punishments for losing. After all, we play games to have fun and be make-believe badasses. Otherwise, we could just stay in the real world.
Unless you mean the smallish aliens that freeze you?
Uh-huh.
(If I recall correctly, try strength mode)
No, he means that the game designers should do a better job of designing games.
