Castle Crashers: Overhyped?
Phantom Spaceman | 3:52 PM on 07.31.2008 21 comments

That's what I'm wondering. I've been listening to the latest podcast and listening to everyone talking about how psyched they are for this title. I've also seen all the commotion about the alleged $22.50 price tag. Forgive me, but is there something I'm missing here? Granted, I haven't had a chance to play this (seeing as how I'm not a professional journalist), but from what I've seen, it looks like any other run-of-the-mill side-scroller. Am I wrong? Love me or hate me.

i guess its who you ask. personally, i'm pretty pumped. when behemoth made alien homonid, the contra style of shmup was all but dead, and they came around with a challenging and beatiful game that just oozed style. you can try it free on new grounds if you never played. many of us who grew up on final fight/river city ransom are optomistic that they'll be able to do it again with the brawler genre. thats all. high hopes for nostalgia, and these guys can deliver.

It's the fact it's being made by The Behemoth, who made the awesome Alien Hominid. It also has classic retro-style brawling, like Double Dragon and such.

It hearkens back to the day of Final Fight, X Men Arcade, TMNT, and all those old classic side-scrolling beat em ups. There's some nostalgia, and coupled with Paladin's art style, it's instantly appealing (for some like me).

And then there's multiplayer co-op, and a little bit of competition (at the end of levels, you fight each other for a kiss from a princess). It sounds like it's gonna be fun.

Since the original XBLA size limit increase, this game has gotten some considerable depth.
1600 points is perfectly acceptable.

Also, have you played it? Cause it is dope.

Alien Hominid had a lot to recommend it, but I must say I found it repetitive and a bit boring after a while. Cheap deaths due to bullets not showing up very clearly didn't help matters, and the soundtrack was forgettable. Still, it has a lot of style, especially visually, and several memorable sequences, and is certainly worth playing.

As for Castle Crashers, being the second game from Fulp, Paladin, and the rest I'm expecting more polish in the level design. The screenshots already show a lot more visual panache than AH in terms of color, which is great. Aside from some hands-on time two years ago when it was still called The Behemoth's Next Game I haven't played much of it. Given my thoughts on AH, I expect it to be a worthwhile game if perhaps a bit overhyped. I'm reasonably hopeful that the amount of time they've put into it will make it feel less like a Flash game on Newgrounds that you have to pay for than Alien Hominid.

What isn't overhyped these days?

Overpriced, I'm going to say yes if it is more than 1200 points. I would prefer it be 800 but I guess I can stretch that far. I am really against pricing games according to their 'quality' or 'content', especially when the baseline for 'average' games is being set at 800. There should be standardised pricing across the board, just like with retail.

With there previous work Alien Hominid being a solid game and them making their reference they were taking some cues from Guardian Heroes I can't help but be optimistic.

I understand the fear of overhype, but Castle Crashers really is incredible. I am sure you will love it once you get to play it. :)

I don't think it's over hyped, honestly I was just interested in it because it was from the makers of Alien Hominid, but after playing it at Comic-Con with other dtoiders I can't wait for it to come out.

I dont get it either. I played Alien Homind and thought it was alright as a free flash game. Picked up the XBLA version and mostly played the PDA missions which are a ton of fun with friends. But i didnt think the single player game itself was anything to shout about.

I dunno. Ill just wait to try the Castle Crashers demo before i make up my mind. I actually find the style way more appealing than Alien Hominid but still dont understand why people are so uppity about it.

this is why there is a demo of every game on xbla...
and that demo will be used
even games I KNOW I will love I demo them just to make sure.

Even (rumored) as the most expensive game on xbla, it is still a tits game. If there's still any question, I'm sure there will be plenty of full reviews once release date comes.

what the fuck is a "run-of-the-mill side-scroller" and where have you seen any of them in the last few years huh?

No game like this has been made in over a decade, dude. Its Golden Axe, its Double Dragon, its Legend and its slightly an RPG as well. You travel around a world map and level up, getting new weapons and shit. All combined with some of the slickest and stylized art in the industry.

If you arent interested in it then dont worry about it. But it's definitely not overhyped if you want a game of this kind, and most retro fans do.

Looks like the first good XBLA game that isn't a remake/port. O fcourse there's tons of hype.

I don't understand the fear of "overhype." Isn't that just based on you?

I played it and trust me this isn't over-hype. You know how you play a game and it just feels right? This is one of those games :)
