An aging hand at all of this, from the Golden Age of the 2600 to the networked crap of today. Been there, done that, wants more.

Inane Facts:

* Once had aspirations of becoming an Apple // software pirate (What? Like you were never 14...).

* Has attended at least two conventions a year since 1995.

* While working at Micro Center's distribution warehouse in the summer of 2000, witnessed over 200 copies of Daikatana set to be shipped to one store and one store alone.

* Was once paid in parts while working at a small computer repair shop.

* Co-Accepted the Origins Game of the Year Award for Hackmaster.

* Perhaps the first man in North America to cosplay a character from Cave Story (the Doctor).

* Once played Street Fighter the Movie: The Game on a PS3 that never worked properly since. The game became known for it's destructive properties.

If Saturday is for the big games, then Sunday is for the hardcore. This is when you start to see more casual matches and the tournaments for the older and more dedicated titles. SSFIIT, Arcana Hearts, SSBM, Mortal Kombat, World Heroes, Mark of the Wolves, Puzzle Fighter, Battle Fantasia, and more.

After some questions on players and hardware, I was able to help out with the Melee tournament. Based on the number of competitors, we decided on a round-robin doubles format. It was finally decided with a five out of three match that ended with a 3-1 victory for the winning team.

The Very Definition of Hardcore: A few guys wanted to get some SCIV action in, but there weren't any free TVs open at the moment. So one of them decides to solve the issue himself by going a few doors down to Big Lots and buys a new TV.

I understand later they tried to return it.

Towards the tail end of the night came the most amusing event of the weekend, the Mystery Tournament. With each round a different game would be chosen at random from a list that included some very out there import titles, such as Kikkoman and the uncomfortably homoerotic Twist or Fist, featuring creepy-faced musclemen beating each other bloody.

At the end of the night, much cash had changed hands, the place was a mess, and new legends were born. Until the next big tournament. Later on, I'll show off some of the controllers that were present.

I just found out about this yesterday (Sunday). I was just casually going to Momo for a smoothy and was surprised to see the crowd. I ended up staying for about an hour watching random matches. Had I have known I would've hung out there all weekend (I live a block away from Momo). Is this going to be in Columbus next year?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else.
