An aging hand at all of this, from the Golden Age of the 2600 to the networked crap of today. Been there, done that, wants more.

Inane Facts:

* Once had aspirations of becoming an Apple // software pirate (What? Like you were never 14...).

* Has attended at least two conventions a year since 1995.

* While working at Micro Center's distribution warehouse in the summer of 2000, witnessed over 200 copies of Daikatana set to be shipped to one store and one store alone.

* Was once paid in parts while working at a small computer repair shop.

* Co-Accepted the Origins Game of the Year Award for Hackmaster.

* Perhaps the first man in North America to cosplay a character from Cave Story (the Doctor).

* Once played Street Fighter the Movie: The Game on a PS3 that never worked properly since. The game became known for it's destructive properties.

Retro Scans: Private Screenings - Games Magazine Dec. 1982
Paul Soth | 12:46 AM on 05.16.2008 9 comments

Games Magazine was one of my late mother's loves. She had a huge stack going back years which I would spend so much time as a kid browsing through. One favorite of mine was the December 1982 issue as it had a special holiday buyers guide to the various game systems of the time. What a time for gaming! So many space games thanks to the original Star Wars films, plenty of systems to chose from, a growing third-party market, and who would of thought that in a year's time the whole thing would collapse in upon itself like a sub-code tenement?

In any event, this feature was written by one Phil Wiswell, who according to a quick Google search, later made a name for himself by writing books on party games. Video game journalism was indeed in its infancy. I manged to keep this issue even after my dad cleaned out all the magazines years ago after my mother's death and I found it not too long ago during my recent move. Anyway, if nothing more then for a cheap laugh, I've scanned the whole thing for your enjoyment, while leaving out the full-page VCR and liquor ads. Features include:

Seven systems reviewed (the crash becomes more understandable).
Tron-like art for the whole article.
Attempts at humor that fall flat.
An article on the then upcoming home computer market (another one of the causes of the crash).
Mentions of many empty promises from manufactures.
And just a pile of aged cheese.

Do enjoy, compare, and contrast.

The Pacman review pretty much sealed the deal. One star, bad graphics, imprecise movements, nothing you did in the arcade worked in the home version....yet this game was "splendidly reproduced by Balco."
That reviewer didn't sell out for high scores, he sold out for the first three lines. Only nerds read the whole article anyways. It was the 80's, who had time for reading?

The one star represented difficulty, see the fifth page.

From page 11:

"Waiting for Godot: You aimlessly maneuver Vladimir and Estragon over a desolate landscape. There are no instructions, no strategy tips, no object. Time's up, you lose"

Holy shit. I think we just found the inspiration for Passage

Oh and...

@Person of Lordly Caliber: Had you read the entire review of Pac-Man, you'd notice that the "splendidly reproduced" comment refers specifically to the Atari 5200 version, which was far better than the VCS edition that totally blew.
