What the hell is wrong with me?

I am just not that into gaming anymore.

Try as I might, I am typing this instead of playing Darksiders. It is unopened. I will just take it back tomorrow. I recently beat Assassins Creed 2. I went through it in about 20-25 hours. I unlocked all 1000 achievment points. I loved Uncharted 2, but not enough to play it again. I beat MW2 on medium difficulty, but haven't touched it on Veteran or Multi. A little Spec Ops, but that is it. I sleep about 20 hours on my days off. I am so tired. Am I "growing up?" I have been gaming since I was 5. Almost 27 years later and I am more interested in casual experiences. I am excited for Bioshock 2, but I already know how its going to go. Pick it up at midnight sale after a 12 hours shift. Get home, eat dinner with the girl, probably watch either House/24/HIMYM/Heroes/BBT and play for an hour before I fall asleep. I just beat Gears of War 2 on Insane...I bought that at launch.

Do I just have post win blues? Where you focus your attention to one particular title and then are lost for a bit afterwords? Since beating AC2, I have not really devoted much time to any serious gaming. The aforementioned GoW2 and 1v100.

Maybe I am just burned out? I work in video game retail. I talk to people about games, ring them up for games, steer them away from buying used 360 time bombs of sadness. I read Destructoid and other gaming sites and magazines. I am buying Heavy Rain, Bioshock 2 in the next few weeks, but I have yet to play Dragon Age and even Fallout 3, even though I bought the expansion content. WTH on that btw.

Anyone else feel this way? Recommendations?

You should punch someone in the face. That always livens me up a bit.

I went through a spell like this, but only because I was dating a girl who thought video games were a waste of time so we sold my consoles and a lot of my games,i didnt touch a game for like 5-6 months. Then fallout 3 came out and i played it at a friends and realized how much i missed games and broke up with her,got my own place, took my weeks vacation from work, and literally sat in my apartment and played all the games i missed over the past months lol.

All of us get out of gaming for a little while every now and then. When my attack of 'meh' was due, I watched a shitload of movies.

I was having that feeling too, then I played The World Ends With You. That brought me back to love gaming again.

It's happened to me. Usually a new hardware announcement piques my interest again. In the meantime, try a different genre of gaming than what you've been playing. You'll either enjoy the new experience, or find out you hate it and realize you love the old stuff.

No big deal. In 1994 I stopped gaming for three years. When I got back to gaming, it was exciting how much there was to find out about what I'd missed.
Get some regular exercise and sleep, makes a world of difference.

It's no big deal. I stopped gaming for a while and just returned last year. Sometimes we just need a break. I know I did. I got involve in other things. Explored films and the film community. Then of course I found my true l found my true love which is music. Then I bought Mass Effect as a birthday present to myself last year and was drawn back in. Personally I think it was good for me. Broadened my horizons so to speak. I still kept my eye on gaming news but wasn't active in the community or bought many games. All in all it ended up being a good decision. I came back with some new experiences, new perspectives, and really refresehe and eager to jump back in. It's been a great year. I discovered Destructoid, bought a lot if games I might not have, and am just generally enjoying myself unlike my last year of gaming before my break when I felt like I was forcing myself to be excited. It was the around when the 360 was released that I realized it just wasn't worth forcing myself to be excited. It was actually making me terribly cynical and unhappy.

It's not a problem at all. Not all of us can have the vigor or passion like editors and developers. My suggestion is take a break an endulge in something else you love or want to get into. Let that take over for a while. If you're lucky it'll be something that makes you look smart like books or something that makes you look pretentious and artsy like indie films (that was me). If the gods doth allow it you'll be back. Just don't ignore gaming. Check the headlines every once in a while like any other news. Eventually something may excite you.

Also, try performing on a stage in something if you can. Like a local play or something in your town. These things are both draining and incredibly satisfying. You won't have time for games trust me an when you're done you'll want nothing more than to come back and just chill.

@Magnalon: Lol

It's ups and downs. I went through a time where I couldn't be bothered to play a game then one day I just started playing again and loving them. Try looking at other things. I started sewing just for kicks and that was fun. Find a new hobby but be prepared to one day answer that siren song of video games. Do take back Darksiders and go rent it somewhere when you want to play it.

Eh don't worry, it's just a phase we all cycle through. I know I'll go through episodes where I'll just turn on my console and basically stare at the starting screen for a good 30 minutes. You're probably getting a bit burned out, so you should take some time exploring things you haven't done. The games will be there whenever you are ready to come back. No sense in playing if you aren't having fun.

I find that running and biking really helps to loosen you up. Maybe join a recreational sport, those are always a blast. Whenever I'm getting tired of games, it is usually because I am lacking exercise. Your body craves to be pushed. Getting your heart pumping and blood flowing helps to clear your mind. Plus the soreness afterwards basically limits you to tv watching and video game playing only haha!

I went through a dry spell when I started University. I never had the time, and when I did, I just didn't feel like playing. My 360 started to collect dust. Also there was the issue that I had this on and off thing with a girl which caused distraction. However when christmas arrived suddenly everything changed for the better. I got AC2, and loved it, at that point I hadn't enjoyed playing a game that much since Fallout 3. And now i'm in my 2nd term at uni i've been able to find the balance of uni, social life and video game time! Currently Mass Effect 2 is getting alot of love!

Try playing some different games?

If you manage to get into Persona 3, you'll be back into gaming, but it won't let you go for a while...

it seems to me like you just don't want to play many current-gen games, which I can understand, cuz current-gen kinda sucks compared to others.

I'd be willing to bet you're in a mainstream rut. You don't inject anything terribly offbeat into your game schedule. You seem to just focus on big name releases that tend to follow the standard money making formula.

You get sick of blockbuster movies after a while. You get sick of blockbuster games if they're all you play too.

This happens to everyone. Take a break for awhile then go back to it.

You say you sleep 20 hours a day on your day off... exaggeration or not, if you're sleeping a lot there could be other things going on - be it depression, a physical ailment, or just catching up from keeping odd hours. Take care of yourself. Take a break from gaming and do something physical - a walk, sports, whatever. Listen to your body.

You'll go back to gaming again... when it's right.

It might help to go back and play some games that you really enjoyed as a kid, the ones that sent you down this path to begin with. Check out some older stuff to relive a few memories and remind yourself of why you have been (most likely) doing this for the majority of your life.

Thanks for all the advice. I actually have quite a few hobbies. I sew, draw and play guitar. I go out to bars and enjoy hanging with my friends and going to the movies. The mainstream rut opinion might hold true. My collection reads like metacritic. I have been downloading some VC games and playing through shining force 2, for like the 12th time. I picked up No More Heroes 2 and have been kind of liking it. Thanks guys, maybe it is time I tried something new.

I'm with you man. I've felt the burden of my backlog and I'm sort of burnt out. I just picked up Darksiders as well, but I'm forcing myself to finish Valkyria Chronicles before touching it. Even then, I'm only allowing myself to play games one night a week now. Trying to devote more time to reading and learning japanese. Maybe eventually I'll feel the need to churn through games quickly, but for now...ugh.

Just let it go and if it doesn't return it wasn't meant to be, but if it comes back then it's true love.

When I can't stand video games, I play pen-and-paper RPGs with friends. When those are too much, I spend some time with my video games. Rinse and repeat.

I blame too much 1v100. Also, my 360 wiped all my achievements and save data for Call of Duty, so let me know if you want to try Spec Ops some time, I have yet to play it with anyone else.
