I decided to replay all the Metal Gear games before MGS4 hits on June 12th and completes the story (perhaps).
This post may include some spoilers for old games, if you have problems with that, I advise you to not read any further.
Metal Gear Solid Disc 1 (continue):
Oh my god. How could I forget the scene, where Meryl gets shot by Sniper Wolf. I remember the first time I played the game, I was getting really agitated, because there is no way to save her at that point. And then you have to run around the whole base, just to get the sniper rifle. On top of that on my first play through I even got the bad ending with Meryl dead and blamed it on this scene, because I couldn't save her here.
This time the impact wasn't as severe as it was back then, but still having a NPC lead you through a mine field and then immediately after being shot by a sniper is still pretty harsh. Also the voice acting here helps a lot too.
At the torture scene Ocelot told me, that I hadn't saved in a long time and won't be able to save here. And I recalled, that it had been around 2 hours since my last save. I kinda remembered the button mashing here pretty hard, but that was most likely because I sucked at button mashing at that time. At this point Ocelot actually makes one of the biggest lies in video game history ever by telling you, that he will notice if you use a turbo controller here. But since everthing the game tells you about controls is absolute, there never was any doubt in me, that what Ocelot told me couldn't be true.
The Hind D battle is kinda meh nowadays, as is the Sniper Wolf battle.
The death of Sniper Wolf is another really emotional point in this game. Especially with Otakon, who is in love with her, standing right next to her, her whispering: "OK hero... set me free..." and Snake taking her life with his pistol. A strange mixture of sadness and anger, why there wasn't another way out of this, actually made me cry replaying this scene. Crying for a character I was so angry at, because of shooting Meryl.
Metal Gear Solid Disc 2:
The Vulcan Raven battle on disc 2 is kinda nice, nothing special but well executed.
On Disc 2 the plot twist keeps hitting you harder and harder.
First Master, the one person you could always depend on in the early games, starts to express suspicions about Naomi. As those accusations get more and more proven, you start to believe in Master even more. But in the end this wasn't Master, but Liquid messing with you. And yes, they just killed of your dependable friend Master just like that.
The battle against Metal Gear is great although it suffers a bit from the clunky 1st person view aiming. In the middle of the battle Gray Fox comes to the rescue. In the following cut scenes the Metal Gear first cuts of one arm of Gray Fox and then crushing him with his torso and leg. Those scenes are so over the top, that they blew my mind, when I first saw them. And all of this in the middle of a battle.
After the Metal Gear battle, we are back to a fist fight after a whole lot of story dialogue from Liquid. Adding a time limit to this battle with Meryls life (and everyone elses) on the line, makes this classic. After her getting shot, this is the first time you see her again and you just have to save her.
Once you have freed her and Liquid has fallen to his death (Even you won't survive to fall down from here, he said), you capture a jeep and make a run for it, but apparently Liquid still isn't dead and is coming after you to take heavy gunfire from the gun installed on your jeep. And even after the crash at the end of the tunnel outside, he is still coming after you. What exactly is wrong with this guy? But luckily for you, he dies from FOXDIE before getting you.
But the final twist actually waits for you after the credits:
Ocelot has a radio conversation with a mysterious character and we learn different things. The conversation ends with Ocelot saying "Goodbye, Mr. President." Too bad I had to wait 3 years for the next game to come out.
