Hello Destructoid people. My name is Lasse and I'm from the country of beer and sausages: Germany. I prefer strange Japanese games. My favorite series of all time is Pop'n Music, which I'm still bad at and can't clear anything above a difficulty rating of 38. BEMANI FOR LIFE!

Fatal Inertia EX - demo impressions
ParaParaKing | 3:43 AM on 05.29.2008 9 comments

Fatal Inertia EX is a futuristic racer similar to wipEout. Originally it was announced as a PS3 exclusive, which then became a 360 game, and is now being released as a downloadable game on the PlayStationNetwork.
The demo included:
Boring gameplay - check.
Boring ship design - check.
Boring music - check.
Boring weapons - check.
Boring races - check.
Overall boring demo - check.
If you must check out the demo is available on the Japanese PSN, but I'd rather wait for wipEout HD before spending money on this one.
Anybody played the 360 version? I wonder how much they changed, since it looks like a simple port with the Achievements copied over.

Never played the 360 game but I think Koei should just stick to hack and slash + historical strategy, and leave the futuristic racing to the pros. :/

The 360 version was horrid and this one looks to be the same. Why get this when the superior Wipeout HD is around the corner.

Also, I see you're a Tekken player. Whenever you want a battle with my Bruce..let me know. :D

That sucks, the premise (Wipeout meets Destruction Derby) sounded interesting.

*Disclaimer: A lot of this rant is actually pertaining to the original release of the game. I realize your giving your impressions on a demo but I feel the game is inaccurately represented enough to inform others about the game itself, not just the demo.

I went out of my way to GET the 360 version... apparently I am alone with my love for this game. In reality I play solely for the velocity races, which I would describe as anything but boring.Acceptable criticism would be "unforgiving, difficult, unbalanced" and possibly "needs some work". But boring? I know a reviewer (even non official-like ones such as ourselves) is entitled to his opinion of a game but I just don't understand why people hate Fatal Inertia so much.

"Boring gameplay - check.
Boring ship design - check.
Boring music - check.
Boring weapons - check.
Boring races - check.
Overall boring demo - check. "

And maybe for those of us who would like to actually KNOW something about the game you could give a bit more analysis other then your tactfully written review of "it dun didnt make me happy"

"Boring gameplay - check."
- I personally found everything but the velocity races a little slow paced for me but other than that rather enjoyed the gameplay. It is fast and demanding, certainly not a game for those with weak analog skills.

"Boring ship design - check."
- Now hold on here... if you don't like futuristic designs that is all well and good... but you can make each of the 4 ship classes (thorugh upgrades) look so incredibly different in the full version of the game that harping on the demo ships being boring is about the equivalent to saying "the demo sucks because I couldn't play the full game". I personally drive a ship that looks remarkably like something batman would fly/drive.

"Boring music - check."
- On this one I have to agree with you. You still wrote it frustratingly poorly much like every other part of you're "first impressions". I was more concerned over the quality of the music rather than the tunes themselves, as they differ in style quite a lot.

"Boring weapons - check."
- maybe discuss which weapons you used and why you didn't like them? I'll admit I would love to see something truly destructive in the game but a few of them I actually thought rather clever. One such weapon includes a hook you can use to a) shoot into the ground and propel yourself forward. b) shoot into an enemy and then into the ground to pull him back. c)shoot into two enemies and watch them struggle to control properly. d)mess up firing it so bad that you end up hurting yourself.
other weapons include rockets, force blasts that knock opponents away from you, shields, EMP's and magnets that make your opponents sluggish and can be barrel rolled off and attach to other nearby racers.

Boring races - check.
- combat races: nothing special, the weapons would need to be a bit more destructive in general to make it better, but you can convert any destructive weapon into a speed boost to liven things up a bit.
- velocity races: incredibly fast and unforgiving. Makes it a hard racing game sometimes and frustrates you when your ship is turned around 180 degrees but all in all I found them rather exciting.

Overall boring demo - check.
- overall boring review - check

The 360 version was one of the worst games of the entire library. If they didn't crank the speed up by at least 300%, just skip it :)

@Diomeneus:
First of all this isn't a review, it's just the impression I got from the demo. A lot of things can be different in the whole game, that I don't know of.
Gameplay:
The demo is very slow paced. Everything even the velocity race feels slow and boring. This isn't how I like my racers. On top of that the difficulty of the demo is very, very easy.
ship design:
The models featured in the demo are nothing special or interesting. Thus I find them boring.
Weapons:
In the tutorial you have to use all the weapons. And there is nothing special to find here either but the rope. The rope is a neat idea, but not that great either.
Races:
As mentioned above the demo is very easy and the tracks aren't complicated either. Also they are rather wide and have nothing special about them.

All in all I'm not saying it's a bad demo, but rather a mediocre demo. And I find mediocre boring.
