Dr. Mario Wii

How many versions of Dr. Mario has there been? There's the GB and NES versions, the SNES version, the N64 version, the GC version, the GBA version, the Classic NES version for GBA, the Dr.Wario version in WarioWare, the BrainAge 2 minigame.

Unless I missed something, this makes the 10th appearance of Dr. Mario. And has anything changed? No, not really. You are still killing of those bacteria like you have for 18 years.

The Wii version new features are online play via Nintendo-WiFi and the Bacteria Extermination mode, that is nothing more than the BrainAge 2 minigame.

The game works fine, but unless you are in for the online play or are a total Dr.Mario nut, there isn't much there for you.

Do you really want to screw with a game like Dr. Mario, though?

The thing is that puzzle games are just like real puzzles. If they work, they always work. It's actually trying to fiddle with them that falls short.

It's the same reason no one is begging for Chess 2 (at least I hope not).

@Lord The Night Knight: Sadly, there are tons of variations available for Chess, running the gamut from 3-4 player versions, decks of cards which are played to modify existing rules, and a version played with chits that has a limitless board size just to name a few.

Given enough time, someone will always try to reinvent the wheel.

Okay, let me correct that. There are plenty of ways to mix some classic games up, but the basic formula still works after all this time. This is why the best puzzle games still stand up, even if they seem downright basic.

Especially if they seem downright basic. Remember, pretty pictures + cute sound effects + few gameplay elements as possible = the gaming equivalent of premium crack cocaine (Zero Punctuation).

Realistically though, are any racing games a jump far beyond the previous iteration? Usually not. They simply rehash some new (albeit possibly worthless) features and a load of new tracks.

As far as puzzle games, they kind of stand for themselves. The repeats are usually just to have more platform exposure.

Its all more or less moot. Its just downsides of the genres.
