Does the Half-Life series have the potential to tell the greatest video game story of all time?
PaperBowser0 | 7:59 PM on 04.27.2009 13 comments

Okay, so I was thinking during school, and had to write the idea down. I was thinking, does the Half-Life series have the potential to tell the greatest video game story of all time? I am eventually going to write an article about this, but honestly, I needed some of your guys' input and help as I can't really organize all of my thoughts and pick a side or not.

Here's where I'm coming from with the fact that it could tell the greatest video game story of all time:
-The fact that it's based on the source engine, and anyone can develop for it. People can create their own twists on the game with stories (eg: Riot Act)
-The game has a massive environment, and everything is pretty differentiated enough from everything.
-The game already comes packed with a great story and some narrative, and although everything seems to advance at a longer pace than most games, it's an experience unlike any other.
-The game interacts with OTHER games like Portal, and all of the stories intertwine when you least expect it.

Okay, so now why I'm kind of opposed to the fact that the half-life series couldn't live up to what I'm dreaming about:
-There isn't that much narrative in the story. I mean, you fight, talk, and advance, but when the narrative does come, it hits you hard.
-It's sometimes hard to keep track of the story at times. If you haven't played the original Half-Life, then that's one thing that you're missing in the series. But the game really leaves a lot of the ideas being expressed and exemplified in the half-life series up to you. You know what's going on, while at the same time, you really don't have any idea.

That's pretty much it. I'm really just looking to get your opinions on the subject, and if the Half-Life series could really be one of the greatest stories told in video games, if not in general. What do you guys think?

Personally, aside from Metal Gear Solid, I think the Half-Life story already is the best story out there.

Are you saying that Half Life itself could tell the greatest video game story of all time?(A laughable idea).

Or that people could use the source engine to tell the greatest story of all time?

Again a laughable idea since the source engine is vastly outdated at this point.

More to the point if we wanna get to specifics, for it to be the greatest story of all time it would have be the last game ever released.

And one more point, Half Life has a silent protagonist, that alone keeps it from reaching greatest story status, Valve has good writers, they could make Gordon speak, they just choose not to and that kills any immersion when people refer to Gordon and ask him questions and all you can do is stare blankly at them.

The greatest videogame story of all time is Grim fandango. I'm sorry, but it is. Another plus is that it begins and it ends in the same game. Remember that? That was nice.

I believe that he is saying Half Life 2 is the perfect platform for telling the greatest story of all time. Half Life has an interesting means of conveying the story to the player, but the story itself leaves a lot to be desired.

It's OK at best. It's just the way that it's told that makes it so attractive.

If any of you ever have the chance, play the developer commentaries.

I swear, they can't be human. They are just too brilliant.

Thanks for your comments guys! Maybe i'll re-think my idea. @cough: actually, now that i think about it...the story in that game would be so much better if gordon could talk....and Grim Fandago does have an amazing story. ;)

Yes. It does have the potential. Will it realize that potential? Maybe. Also about this whole 'the story has to fit in one game' thing, I don't agree with that. A series' story can be just as good if not better than a single narrative entry.

I never thought Half-life had a good story. It's just aliens invading earth. But what it does brilliantly is its presentation of said story, with likable characters.

The actual story in half-life is very mediocre, I think. Yeah, it's pretty hard sci-fi, something a lot of people haven't been exposed to, so it's fantastic to them. The reason that the half-life stands out is due to its amazing immersion and Valve's attention to detail in every little aspect of the game. Like Ronburgandy said, listen to the Developer Commentary, you'll be surprised at how much stuff they cram into those games.
If you listened to John Blow's lecture on storytelling in games, you'll find that half-life actually has a great number of flaws that make the story very hard to follow/be good. This doesn't make it not fun, but it just goes to show you that nothing is perfect.

So basically, Half-life is getting there. Valve broke a lot of barriers in design with it and brought them to the forefront in the games industry. While I don't think that this particular arc in the half-life story will be the greatest, maybe the next will, or who knows, valve may pass the torch and another developer will make the "greatest game story ever" (My money is on Brütal Legend ;))

Maybe not the greatest story but definitely some of the greatest/most human characters.
