I got to check out this flick on Thursday, instead of the usual one theater that does midnight showings for movies, four of them chose to do a showing for our favorite yellow family (favorite at one point in your life at least). I went into the movie expecting nothing more than a long episode of the show. In the back of my mind though I was hoping for something that could either top, or at the very least match, the best cartoon show to movie ever, South Park (I can't stand songs in movies, makes me angry in fact, like its filler or something, but the ending to Satan's song completely changed my opinion on that).
Anyways, back to the Simpsons movie. Without telling the plot or ruining a joke, I can say this movie was a very solid 8.75999 on a scale to 10 (9 would just be too much imho, 8 is too little). The family all was represented really well, maybe not enough Bart for a really old school fan, but I can admit that it was Homer that really made the show as big as it is, and the movie really helps show why. Lisa and Marge have some great laughs, and I loved Maggie's jokes throughout the film as well. Some new characters are shown, and a crapload of old ones you any fan will easily be able to point out and feel like a true geek when you name them off to the person next to you who doesn't care as much as you do. A decent amount of visual gags are sprinkled in, to ensure that when the dvd is out, you will be pausing every so often. A couple of guest voices (literally 2, well 4, but 3 are together..err.. you'll know what I mean right away when you see it). I am really glad the lack of guest voices as I wasn't sure how this was going to be handled, because we all know they could get any famous person to do a voice in the movie.
There is one reason I couldn't give this movie a full 10, or even a full 9, a reason that pissed me off, but if you want to hear it.. you will have a little bit of the movie spoiled. So if you don't care, read on, if you plan on seeing it, maybe you should skip the rest of this review and enjoy the flick, then come back and let me know if you agree.
THE SPOILER: With all the characters shown on screen, the lack of their use amazes me. I know it is all about The Simpsons family themselves, but man, I could of used a lot more Milhouse with Bart. Mr Burns had a good scene with Wiggum, Hibbard, and Apu, but other than that, I can't think of many other scenes with characters doing things on their own. I already discussed this with another Simpsons fanatic friend of mine, he said I am crazy, but c'mon, the big boobed Eskimo lady got more time on screen than Ralph. Give me more Lenny and Carl jokes. Still, I love this movie. Maybe not on the level that the South Park movie was done, which I think was way more of a 'film' than a long South Park episode, The Simpsons movie still was better than the Beavis and Butthead flick, and slightly better than the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie (both of which I love dearly as well though). Despite my gripe of the lack of some characters, still go watch it. Without specific spoilers on charcters, expect to see a cartoon penis, a middle finger being waved, and someone clearly smoking their bong. What else you going to watch anyways, "Who's Your Caddy?" .. puleeeze.
Awesome, I am glad I wasn't the only one not getting enough of all the side people, I am quite the diehard as well. Hans Moleman should have died at least twice in the movie *SPOILER AHEAD* ..Dr Nick stole his thunder near the end!
Well I KNEW electro lemon was a simpsons HARDCORE FOR REAL. the amount of simp swag plastered all over his room was enough indication. ratio of lark simpson room adornment to lemon 0:10000. Now i'm no mathematician and that ratio might not even be a real ratio, but in the land of point making I think I've made it.
Nice review, I liked the movie as well! Which was actually a surprise, since I thought the show really went downwards in the last 5 years. Maybe Adult Swim and Family Guy just spoil my need for random jokes.
But one thing I noticed was that I was able to forget most of it just a day afterwards. Something I didn't have with Ratatouille. Did anyone else have this?
i have yet to see it...(im so ashamed of myself since im known to my friends as the mega ultra simpsons nerd)but if kirk vanhouten aka GOD is not on screen for at least 45 minutes, im not going.
I agree, PacoDG. The movie really focused on the main family, so I think anyone crossing their fingers hoping for a great side adventure with one of their favorite pet characters will be slightly disappointed. I personally could have handled a lot more of Moe and Burns, but there's really not much to complain about in the movie. A surprising burst of energy from The Simpsons in the franchise's victory lap.
