PS Friday Night Fights: TV Party Edition

I need to play Witcher 3 anyway.

Work has me pretty beaten down right now, so I’ll try to keep this brief.

This year has seen a pretty heavy increase in comic book based TV series and I’m just now getting caught up with all of them. Daredevil was, to me, pretty overhyped. The Flash was fun but uneven. Arrow is doing more with their extended cast but trading narrative logic for twists and cliffhangers. Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. introduced an almost entire new cast at the beginning of the season which was, hilariously, more interesting than the original… which says something about how utterly mediocre it is. I refused to watch Constantine on principle and I dance on it's grave.

The big surprise to me was the (somewhat loose) adaptation of iZombie. Writer and showrunner Rob Thomas, much like Kevin Smith or Joss Whedon, has a very love-it-or-hate-it style of dialogue. However, Veronica Mars and Party Down were both fantastic so it was worth a shot. After a very cookie cutter couple of opening episodes, I was surprised to see how much and how quickly it grew into an interesting show with likeable characters and actual character arcs.

There are definitely aspects of it that are a bit too cute (the lead character’s name got changed to Liv Moore. Ha?) but while the characters start off as one thing, the whole status quo gets upended by the end of the season. Someone like Liv’s ex-fiance, Major Lilywhite (no shit, that’s his name), starts out as a bland Abercrombie & Fitch model but by goes through a total transformation once he starts getting nudged into the main plot.

The premise of the show fits the procedural aspects perfectly so the case-of-the-week never feels shoehorned in (unlike, say, Constantine) and they’re perfectly willing to speed things up to get on with the overarching plot. It all culminates in a drum tight humdinger of a season finale. After watching shows like S.H.I.E.L.D. lurch around looking for cheap drama, it was refreshing for a show to let it’s characters earn it.

It’s definitely not for everyone (especially those turned off by super snarky dialogue), but it’s a damn solid genre show. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do this fall with a full season to work with.

So, anyway… games!

PS Friday Night Fights: Real Life Blues Edition

About a million years ago (or so I hoped) I wrote a blog for the cblog recaps covering someone who was out for that day and in the body of the blog I used the space to vent a little. My close buddy had gotten married and decided to move away to be with his wife and kid. How far away you ask? All the way on the other side of the country far away, far enough that seeing him would need to cost lots of cash and time taken out ahead of time.

Since that blog we have reached "time has come" street and "today" avenue. My friend left this morning and will not be coming back realistically for at least another couple years. He said two and a half. Originally I was under the impression that he would be gone after one more semester for his wife but no it's going to be a lot longer before he returns, as he said permanently. It's kind of created a bit of chaos, suddenly his friends and family, myself included have to deal with one less person to hang with/live with/etc. We threw an impromptu party for my friend in honor of leaving and it was pretty awkward. Awkward on the count of him not telling most of us how long he'd be gone for or even that he was married and leaving in the first place. That's my friend though, just lays news on you like that.

Again since that original blog post, from which not a whole lot of time has passed, I have come to terms with the melancholy feeling this is all giving me. Which is good. On the one hand I won't have to make excuses for dealing with this, and I've gotten pretty good at meeting new people and making new friends. I would say that I'm fairly comfortable with the sudden change. Thankfully it doesn't look like I'll have much of a challenge going forward from this point losing a friend. But on the other hand I'm lying if I say that I'm 100%. I am definitely not over it there is still some resonating feeling of sadness. Just the thought "gone for two and a half years" depresses me. And from there I realize this is was being old feels like. I've lost friends before. Some much in the same way, permanently because of moving away and others just because we've grown apart over time. But this time I feel like I'm on the edge of before and after, and a whole lot is going to change from here.

Sounds dramatic, I know sorry but writing about your problems usually does. One other thing about this is that it was fun to be out with some old friends when we took our departing friend for one last hurrah. Kind of makes me want to reconnect with some of them, just to have some connections grounded in "the old days" and high school with the loss of my one good friend that I've not stopped chilling with since high school. But again that sort of feels like this idea of trying to hold on to the old days. It was great to see them and shit I won't lie I was really butthurt one of them wasn't single at the time else I'd be starting something. I can't just look backwards all the time. I won't be hanging out with anyone else I knew in High School and that's fine. It might actually be an important change that will better me later on. I don't know yet, but it's pretty cool to have a place to right all of this out. Thanks for that ladies and gents.

Now I'll just leave this video here, it's been on my mind a lot. I'm including it mainly for the music and because I want to keep living life, enjoying myself and skating.

I did think of one thing to make myself feel a little better, since no one officially put themselves down to hosting last of us and even though I was intending on making this friday a "single player only" kinda night I guess I could come through and host.

And now on to games.

PS Friday Night Fights: BRB Comicon Edition

 Welcome to the Nerd Prom

I’m writing this after my first full day at the Phoenix Comicon, so I’m going to be brief. I’m having a great time. Wish you were here. Etc.

I’m on staff running board games which has the bonus of netting me a free full event pass for doing something that I would have been doing anyway. Though I think I’m the only person hosting games who isn’t part of an organization of some sort. I figure I’ll start brainstorming evil-sounding names for my non-existent group next year.

In the meantime, I need sleep because I have a busy schedule of creeping on cosplay chicks and admiring nerdy stuff I can’t afford in-between running games. Life is hard.

So, anyway… games!

PS Friday Night Fights: My Knees Look Like Swiss Cheese Edition

The title is only a slight exaggeration, at least as far as the reason for coming up with that comparison: There are marks all over my legs from newly fucked up skin, old healing skin and plenty of scabs. Such is skating I guess. I never did the skatepark stuff back last time when I skated regularly so the last few months have been a huge learning process, neglecting my street skating so that I can get used to vertical drop ins and bowl/ramp skating. I've been absolutely refusing to wake up in the early AM and head to the park (when there are zero people around but it's open) with all my pads on and as a result I keep getting banged up, it actually hurts to stand on my left leg right now.

I wouldn't give that up though, wounds and bones can heal but the skill (or craft if you will, ho ho) needs to be maintained with regular skating so what's a fella to do? What's really cool about being in a park is talking with people you meet and making new friends. What's also cool is when those same people that you just met push you to do things. Things like trying to ollie that gap up the mini bowl off that slope that's so high but you've been thinking about doing it for awhile now and just building up to it with smaller jumps. Fuck small steps. So I needed to get a running start before I descend the other side slope if I want to make the gap. Well when you do that you hit a really high speed at the bottom one that I wasn't used to yet. Which means your trucks shake like a wet dog that has a phobia of water and if you can't handle it you fall.. so I fell. I'm actually kind of blaming myself on this one because I didn't focus enough on the descent my eyes weren't "in the right place" I was kind of half assing it and I went right into the floor hip, knee and wrist first. That sucked but honestly at the speed I was going and at the angle my body was at I probably could've had a lot worse, it could've made me faceplant at which point I'd have been in a hospital.

But I absolutely won't blame the other skaters for pushing me to try new shit, even if it almost fucked me up good because you need that, I mean someone to push you. That's how you get better in skating. Even if they're doing it just to fuck with you because they know you're not as good as them/comfortable with the trick or whatever it's good to have someone make you try new things. Otherwise I'd be doing the same old stuff I've been doing for weeks now. I haven't even dropped into the mini yet. I'll get on that though, for now enough rambling about skateboarding and injuries, although quick side note it's strange that it took me this long to write in the FNF post about skateboarding, here are Friday's games!.

Like the description says it's amazing how fun looking stuff can hurt so bad.

Games!!

PS Friday Night Fights: Bodily Fluid Stampede Edition

Never forget a Bloodborne reference.

So, I’ve been laid up since last Tuesday night with a really bad cold. Made the mistake of spending the previous Saturday hanging out with friends who had just gotten over one and I apparently didn’t properly scrub myself afterwards. I hadn’t caught a cold like this in a long, long time. Allergies, I’m used to. This was just a Cronenbergian body horror mess of phlegm. You could make a Mini Me out of everything that’s come out of my body in the last week.

Luckily, I had already requested a few vacation days off for a couple of concerts that I was no longer able to attend (yay, non-refundable tickets!) and I was at least semi-coherent for a few of those days, so I managed to get some gaming in. Still, 0/10 cold. Would not recommend.

One underrated game I managed to finish was White Night. A black-and-white noir jazz horror tragedy set in a spooky mansion in the ‘30’s. I hadn’t heard any advance buzz and reviews have been pretty mediocre, but I actually had a pretty good time with it. With the glut of crap horror games that seem to exist solely in hopes of being featured in a PewDiePie video, this was actually fairly well done.

Anyone who has ever seen anything with an amnesiac protagonist will probably be able to work out the plot in the first ten minutes and enemy placement can be annoying but otherwise it was a pretty good time. I especially dug the jazz tunes and a excellent usage of Debussy’s “Clair de Lune.”

The thing about it I found unique was the ghost of the jazz singer that you are pursuing throughout the mansion. With all the dark psychodrama about a tattered family of Boston’s Depression Era elite disintegrating into syphilitic madness, religious mania and ritual murder, as revealed in the many books around the mansion, the singer, Selene, remains a beacon of hope for the player as you try to unravel what happened and set her free. It’s a good hook and kept me interested throughout. If you’re looking for a quick jaunt (I did a speed run for a trophy and beat it in a couple hours) it’s worth the $15 or so to play. Or wait for it’s eventual release on PS+. Whichever.

So, anyway… games!

PS Friday Night Fights: Not having a title ate my post Edition

Yeah just like the title says, I've had done it all but forgot to put in a title and when I went back my beautiful work was gone. So now we have this: Me trying to remember what I wrote

So there isn't a whole lot for me to say this weekend. I had some fun out skating but I want to save my skateboarding talk for either a workshop, DC or a magazine, still seeing how those things pan out. In the meantime however, I wrote a blog about how I have too many games to play. So trying to get through my backlog means that there are a bunch of wonderful new Plus games I'm dying to try but will have to wait and so will Akiba's Trip that I just bought so that I can play Grand Theft Auto III. But you can read all about that in the post where I update you on what I'm playing. Otherwise this and this have been stuck in my head. The former because of a Dtoid blog call/comment and the latter because of the new episode of Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown where he goes to Miami and hangs out with his hero Iggy Pop. Very good episode but really, it's an episode of Bourdain:PU why wouldn't it be good? So yeah my bad, sorry for not writing something so much substantial as it could have been this week. In return take this image of Colin giving birth and we can get to some games!

PS Friday Night Fights:Mass Transit Hell Edition

Work is a grind. Get it? Grind. Like skating…?

For those keeping up, work is still kicking my butt right now. The “nine hours on a weekday, five hours on Saturday” wouldn’t be quite as exhausting if you didn’t factor in a 2 to 2 ½ hour(!) bus ride each way. I’ve been trying to keep myself busy on those trips by bringing my Vita along but even with a game and earbuds, you can’t escape the sad fact that some people leave the house smelling like actual human feces and you have to deal with that.

I had to take a break from my obsessive Binding Of Issac Platinum Trophy hunt as re-running all the characters on Hard mode is becoming mind-numbing and I think one of the items is glitched. Luckily, I got a big, chunky Vita hard drive so I’m loaded for bear. I kept hearing good things about OlliOlli 2 but the first couple of stages didn’t wow me. However, I tried again and once the Manuals got unlocked, everything made sense. Bust as many moves as possible while maintaining your combo. Okay, understood.

I’m not normally a very animated gamer. I can curse up a storm in competitive multiplayer but I don’t spaz out. Normally. However, getting into OlliOlli 2 has really brought out the doofus in me. I have a death grip on the Vita which I jerk around in whatever direction I’m trying to use push the joystick to do a trick. I lean in and knock my knees against the seat ahead of me. I grunt or sigh audibly depending on how well I do. In public. Without thinking about it. And suddenly the Wet Feces Man and I aren’t so different after all.

It’s an ingenious little time waster. Better by far than whatever Match 3 or Infinite Runner is popular on phones right now. The instant re-start button is particularly devilish. If any doesn’t go your way, you didn’t land that Perfect Grind or Manual Revert, screw it… just hit triangle. Get a Sloppy rating mid-combo? Triangle. Get distracted and screw up your opening jump? Triangle. By getting an instant do-over in two button presses means the feedback loop never really ends and you can just keep playing until your wrist gets sore. Or whatever.

Oh, and if you’ve been in the forums or the C-Blogs in the last 48 hours, it’s clearly been a little tense around here. I wish we could all just get together and listen to Fred “Sonic” Smith of MC5 lay down some shit hot guitar riffs. Because every disagreement can be solved with a little turbo rock & roll. Particularly at a volume that drowns out any arguing. Stay gold, Destructoid.

So, anyway… games!

PS Friday Night Fights: Start of a New Era Edition

Hey everyone, in case you haven't heard the old FNF crew has left us! Thankfully though this particular brand of FNF is not dead. It's still the great Defenestrator who is overseeing much of this and I join the ranks now as the other co-organizer of PS Friday Night Fights from now on. I hope that you guys will come to enjoy my ramblings and that I won't make too many mistakes (pause for laughs). You see, a husband has to know only two words, "yes" and "dear" hah oh shit wrong card.

Take a second to salute Cornflake, Kim and Trev for all the great work they've done over the years here, they deserve it. For now though I'm here and I want to bring you the games we play over on the playstation side of destructoid every friday, alternating with Defenestrator. A little about myself. I'm kind of lazy and try to get involved in the communities I like. I recently remembered one of the reasons I joined Destructoid. And that was because they had the name, "nanashi" vacant. That's something I've been searching for forever. Everywhere I went and every community I joined online the name "nanashi" was already taken. But not here. Dtoid kept it open. Just for me. Actually on the forums there already was a "nanashi" but he was inactive enough that I could be the dominant nanashi there. Also Mxy did some admin magic, must've used an incantation or something, and both of us were able to be under the same username. At least that's how I remember it.

Anyway, I hope to be gaming with you soon. I thank you for letting me do this job and I feel like I'll be remembered for my antics on the PStoid podcast as the Newsted of this community. Except I'm staying bitches. Pie in face and all. Now let's see what's playing this weekend!

PS Friday Night Fights: End Of An Era Edition

Time is a flat circle.

If you haven’t checked out the forum this week, you should know that it’s the end of an era. Trev, Kym and Cornflake have, after years of maintaining PS FNF, decided to pull up stakes and move on. There comes a time where other shit matters more and that time is now. This has happened before and it will happen again, over and over again for all eternity. Myself and that lovely boy Nanners have been tapped to take over.

FNF is the first place at Destructoid that I felt I fit in. Not because Trev and the gang are all super happy, shiny people. Actually, it was the opposite. I had to put in a little work. I had to show up, I had to not suck, and I had to figure out how to get my shitty microphone to not annoy everyone else. The people who had been gaming together for years had an easy rapport and banter with plenty of shit-talking. The onus was on me as a pointedly quiet and anti-social person to fit in. And eventually I did. (I think.)

Some of the best times I’ve had gaming were since joining FNF regularly. And some of the best arguments as well. But, oddly, I never respected anyone else less because we might have disagreed with each other. (Which, based on most internet conversations, is something just shy of a fucking miracle.) So, kudos to Trev, Cornflake and Kym for all the hard work. I’d say goodbye but I have your goddamn PSN ID’s so good luck getting rid of me, fuckers.

By the way, I don’t have an ounce of Trev’s coding ability, and it’s mostly his work that made the blog looks so goddamn good every week, so if there are bumps or hiccups in the next couple of weeks while Nanners and I get settled in, I apologize in advance. I hope you’ll stick around because I will eventually be hosting Payday 2 and Borderlands 2 on PS4 just to make Trev and Cornflake squirm. :)

So, anyway… games!

Last minute additions in the comments here are fine, but games can also be added earlier in the week by visiting the forums and finding the thread with the coming Friday's date. Adding a game there ensures it's on the blog from the moment it goes up.

PS Friday Night Fights: More Bloodborne Edition

<3

I've been playing a lot of Bloodborne lately, and it really is a From game. The framerate isn't always perfect, but your starter gear has a physics enabled pocket watch chain. I would love to ramble, but I know people are still going to be all sorts of touchy about spoilers. I've never thought hearing about it replaces experiencing it, but whatever. Shit gets wild. As usual, I'm still piecing together the story because it's told through random descriptions rather than cutscenes.

The store update this week included $62 worth of Evolve DLC. That's a thing. Am I ever glad I didn't buy that shit. Trev

PS Friday Night Fights: BBL... Bloodborne Edition

You're not reading this. We're not having this conversation.

Let's be honest. You're playing Bloodborne right now. I'm basically talking to myself. So we'll keep this brief.

I am not playing Bloodborne. I am still deep in the weeds doing mandatory overtime. I get home at eight and need up be up at five so there's really no chance if I want to stay conscious throughout the day. It's installed and updated on my PS4 and just sitting there waiting for me but I need to wait until Saturday to finally dig in.

So, while you're all having fun playing the GOTY, I'll be dragging ass through this last day of work. Screw you guys. You all suck.

So, anyway… games!
