Welcome to the home of PlayStation Friday Night Fights.

Friday Night Fights is a weekly event where we, community members, cooperate with or murder each other online. There is a forum thread for planning and then a blog post here with the final schedule. Keep an eye out for both them if you want to play some games.

If you are new to the whole thing, check this out: FNF FAQ: Everything you need to know (but never asked) about Friday Night Fights

The Guide

To Play

Keep yourself up to date on the schedule. The list in the forums can change several times throughout the week.

Leave a message with your PSN name and which games from the schedule you want to play. More people will play if other people are playing, so speak up.

Send a PSN friend request to the person hosting the game which includes a message with your Dtoid name. If you leave out who you are on the site, they might think you're just a random friend request and ignore you.

To Host

If you want your game listed on the schedule, we need the game, the time, and your PSN ID. We need the specific game, not an abbreviation that applies to more than one; a start time, even if you're playing "all night"; and we need your PSN ID even if you think we know it already.

Don't worry about hosting the same game or hosting a game at the same time as someone else. Instead, think of it like a movie theater; more than one game can run at the same time.

Make sure you have at least an hour to play. That's only two or three matches of the average shooter and those go by pretty quick.

Check the comments, on both the forum post and the cblog when it goes up on Friday, to see if someone has said they'll play. You might have missed their PSN message or your friend list might be full.

Please god just make it stop

So I’ve been running myself ragged over the last month or so working mandatory overtime. Six day work weeks, ten hours a day, trapped in a cubicle staring at a computer screen. It is not fun. I get home and I have time for dinner and maybe a movie before I need to try and hit the sack. (Which inevitably doesn’t work without pharmaceutical help.)

The extra money is nice and it helps me get caught up on things but it leaves me no time for gaming. The best I’ve been able to manage is watching a movie or one of Trev’s occasional Twitch friendcasts while I mess around with Binding Of Issac on my Vita.

Maybe on Sunday I can get a couple hours of something in between chores (probably more Binding Of Issac, honestly) but otherwise I am in full cubicle drone mode. Which makes the couple of hours I get playing with the Friday Night Fights gang even better. I just hope things slow down soon so I can get back to normal. In short, work sucks and you should avoid it if at all possible.

So, anyway… games!

The Defenestrator

Welcome to the Playstation side of Friday Night Fights! Every Friday, members of the community get together online to play games and all you need to join is a user account. Down below, you'll find a list of games that we'll play tonight along with the times they'll start, the people that you should hit up for invites, and any other information that you may need.

If you want to play, leave a comment with the games from the schedule you want to play and your PSN name. You should also send a PSN friend request to the host and mention your username here in the message so they know you're one of the cool people and not just some random friend request.

If your favorite game isn't on the schedule, host it yourself! You just need to give us the game, start time, and your PSN name so people know what, when and who. It's also wise to list DLC requirements, game or server names, and anything else people might need to join just so you don't need to message it to everyone individually. Last minute additions in the comments here are fine, but games can also be added earlier in the week by visiting the forums and finding the thread with the coming Friday's date. Adding a game there ensures it's on the blog from the moment it goes up.

Friends don't let programmers design GUIs

I wish programmers weren't expected to design GUI's...

So I'm done with the 'get shit done yesterday' weeks, and now I'm to 'get shit done by 10pm tonight.' I can never win. I have to work with a business partner on a plugin to their product (god I hate that word) that brings shit that our tool makes into their final product. I have no idea how it works, and they just kind of threw me at it, while the guy who usually works on stuff like this is gone to Korea for 2 weeks. This is not making for a fun time.... Not to mention their tool has about a thousand windows that all look like they were created by programmers (ie, the image above). It hurts me inside.

In gaming news, I platinumed Far Cry 4, and it was the first game I have ever platinumed, so I've got that going for me.

Like always, if you want to hear me ramble off and curse at things that were totally fucking bullshit, you can view the FNF stream later tonight, either at KymikoLoco or Trev's streams. Hope to see you there!KymikoLoco

It's okay. He's a doctor.

I picked up Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- (Guilty Gear titles are still Guilty Gear titles, btw) and there are some good and bad points to it. I know, what a thought, a game not being perfect. It looks amazing. There are times you don't know it isn't HD sprites, and there are times you wish it was still the 2D just because Arc's art was so good. The online lobbies are more than we're ever going to need for FNF, and about as easy to figure out as doing your own taxes for the first time, but the system is certainly robust and I can appreciate it for people who want that sort of thing. The character selection is a bit limited, with certain omissions that I don't quite understand. There's no Johnny, no Dizzy, no Anji, no Bridget, no Jam, Testament, Baiken, or Kliff. The models even show up in story mode for some of them. There is such a big pile of Guilty Gear characters to choose from and I feel like they could really have worked in a few more. However, I think a more limited set of characters can lead to a better game because there is more room for each character to cover without feeling as though they overlap. You don't need five different zoning characters to only have one of them be really good. Just have the one that's good and fuse in some of the ideas that would have been other characters. I'm willing to trade number of characters for making those characters more unique, and I think Xrd does that.

A new trailer for Evolve showed up on my Youtube feed, titled Ready or Not. I know what they meant, but it also very conveniently covered how I expect the game to be released. Get it? Ready or not. Aren't I clever? Really though, my faith in new online games, especially games relying on the easily screwed up asymmetrical multiplayer is effectively nonexistent. And then they've got all that day-one DLC... What I've seen so far is a game with little retail content, a mountain of DLC, and more DLC to come. You can apparently get a fifth monster if you spend a hundred dollars on the game, but only on PC and not right now. It will be out some vague time after launch, but you can pay for it right now. That sounds so great that I'm skipping Evolve. I don't think I'd even play it for free, since I'd still have to spend more on DLC than I would on a brand new retail game to get the rest of the content. Trev

Don't you see how weird that looks?

This week on Tales from the Podcast: Kim thinks that works, but I'm pretty sure that June Cleaver didn't have an opinion on garbage randos that are too stupid to PTFO and refuse to GTFO. Imagine the idyllic, technicolor class of fictional suburbia, combined with yelling shit at XxJuNkInDaTr0nK420xX because they're 3 and 17 in TDM. You can't do both. Not at the same time. It's too weird. It should really be more like "Golly gee, mister! We oughta get B if, it's not too much trouble." shouldn't it? Or maybe some curiosity about why there are videogames in the kitchen, because you could get away with that sort of thing back then. Plus you've really got to consider that all those bad thoughts about people on the internet would have Bill Mumy send you into the cornfield like that jack-in-the-box guy.

Now that I've written that, I really wish there were games in my kitchen so I could screw around without all the walking back and forth. I just barely get to doing whatever in a game and then I need to go back and stir something again. What a hassle. Trev

It’s a little weird that the newest guy to join the FNF blog team would be the one eulogizing “Chilly” Bill Platt. I don’t know the guy well. I know his nickname makes him seem like a background character in Top Gun. I know he’s an absurd Nintendo fanatic. I also know he has a kid arriving shortly so it only makes sense that he’d step back to put his affairs in order given his life is basically over now. He’s got a real life Tamagotchi on it’s way so that will take up a lot of valuable gaming and Amiibo shopping time.

So fare thee well, ChillyBilly. I will always remember the one time I played with you. It was a game of Battlefield 4 that was just about to end. You didn’t join the party and got sorted onto the opposing team. I fragged you with a pistol and then left to play Warframe. The End. See you in the Basement, big guy! Good luck with the kid.

In the meantime, our new Community Playdate Manager is Mike “PhilKenSebben” Martin. I hope you brought lube because you can’t borrow mine. (Yes, I have lube. Lots of lube. I’m like a sexual MacGyver.)

So, anyway… games!

This is how I've felt the past week

I'm hopefully finally done with the intense 'get shit done yesterday' kind of work I've been doing the past 2 weeks, and I can relax and peruse the forums a bit more, and play a few more games.

I'm (im)patiently waiting for a Planetside 2 Beta invite that I signed up for, but I'm fairly certain I wouldn't play it anyways, so I'm failing to see the point of me waiting. If you want to hear me ramble off and curse at things that were totally fucking bullshit, you can view the FNF stream later tonight, either at KymikoLoco or Trev's streams. Hope to see you there!KymikoLoco
