About
Welcome to the home of PlayStation Friday Night Fights.

Friday Night Fights is a weekly event where we, community members, cooperate with or murder each other online. There is a forum thread for planning and then a blog post here with the final schedule. Keep an eye out for both them if you want to play some games.

If you are new to the whole thing, check this out: FNF FAQ: Everything you need to know (but never asked) about Friday Night Fights

Front Page Archive

The Guide

To Play

• Keep yourself up to date on the schedule. The list in the forums can change several times throughout the week.

• Leave a message with your PSN name and which games from the schedule you want to play. More people will play if other people are playing, so speak up.

• Send a PSN friend request to the person hosting the game which includes a message with your Dtoid name. If you leave out who you are on the site, they might think you're just a random friend request and ignore you.

To Host

• If you want your game listed on the schedule, we need the game, the time, and your PSN ID. We need the specific game, not an abbreviation that applies to more than one; a start time, even if you're playing "all night"; and we need your PSN ID even if you think we know it already.

• Don't worry about hosting the same game or hosting a game at the same time as someone else. Instead, think of it like a movie theater; more than one game can run at the same time.

• Make sure you have at least an hour to play. That's only two or three matches of the average shooter and those go by pretty quick.

• Check the comments, on both the forum post and the cblog when it goes up on Friday, to see if someone has said they'll play. You might have missed their PSN message or your friend list might be full.

What they want.

There seem to be several more free to play games on their way to PS4, but I'll get to that in a minute. I have a story about a terrifying crisis.

Late Wednesday night, technically the wee hours of Thursday morning if you want to be like that, I was having trouble getting to sleep. That's a thing that happens. I was maybe just drifting off when I heard a burst of high pitched beeps. Strange sounds and half consciousness are like rocket fuel. Wide awake, I listen and hear them again. I know that sound. It's the sound it makes when you try to eject a disc from a playstation when there isn't one there. Maybe there are other things that use the same beep, but I only know of two devices in my possession that make it and they're both black videogame machines. I go check it out to find my PS4 is in a state of FOREVEREJECT, repeating the process over and over. Fortunately, the cause is simple and the fix is easy. There's a manual eject screw on the PS4 and it apparently can become loose. You can pop off that shiny plastic segment and tighten it a little and the problem goes away. The purpose of the screw, if the name didn't give it away, is to allow you to spit the disc out of your PS4 even if it's a brick. Counterclockwise ejects the disc. If you find your PS4 constantly ejectulating when you don't want it to, all you need to do is go the other way. Tighten the screw down and teach it a lesson. That went to a weird place…

Anyway, free to play games! Whether you like the free to play model or not is your business. We have a hobby that's expensive no matter which way we go with it. What really matters is the quality of the game being offered. If they want your support in the form of paying for dress up bits, or if they demand money for a product you haven't had the opportunity to test and for which they bent over reviewers with the threat of no more free games should they put up a review before the game is on shelves. Loadout looks… something. I don't know that it's what I'm into. It has a sense of humor about it, but it doesn't fit me. The gameplay might be able to make up for that, and I love building weird guns. War Thunder, on the othunder hand, looks like it could be pretty intense. It will have to strike the right balance between sim and fun though. The stakes being high and things being difficult is what makes a game engaging. I don't know how I feel about these hand-me-down PC games, but if they're good and I can play them without being at a PC, I guess that's pretty good. I sit at a PC all day. I don't want to do it at home, for entertainment.

It is, however, important to note that the quality of a game can be brought down by an impolite F2P model. I haven't heard War Thunder's is all that great.

Welcome to the Playstation side of Friday Night Fights! Every Friday, members of the community get together online to play games and all you need to join is a user account. Down below, you'll find a list of games that we'll play tonight along with the times they'll start, the people that you should hit up for invites, and any other information that you may need.

If you want to play, leave a comment with the games from the schedule you want to play and your PSN name. You should also send a PSN friend request to the host and mention your username here in the message so they know you're one of the cool people and not just some random friend request.

If your favorite game isn't on the schedule, host it yourself! You just need to give us the game, start time, and your PSN name so people know what, when and who. It's also wise to list DLC requirements, game or server names, and anything else people might need to join just so you don't need to message it to everyone individually. Last minute additions in the comments here are fine, but games can also be added earlier in the week by visiting the forums and finding the thread with the coming Friday's date. Adding a game there ensures it's on the blog from the moment it goes up.

Only 6 months late, right?

Hey guys! So apparently a new hyped game came out this week, and it was surrounded by hilarious bugs, amazing(ly bad) PR stunts, and vendors breaking street date. Me? I don't think I'll be getting it until the first few round of patches, or until there is an Amazon sale or something.

For the people that have it: How is it? I'm curious to see what my fellow FNFers think of it if they have it.

In other game news, I got CoD: Ghosts recently, and had a wonderful experience with a (potentially) black youth. I was playing the Sqauds mode against one other person (him), who I won against. Well, they decided to invite me to their party. Given that no one else was playing the game that I know, I decided to join and play with one other person, since you usually win with teammates. How wrong I was.

I joined him, and the absolute first thing he did was ask if I was a boy or girl. Off to a great start already. I let that slide. THEN he asks me for my real name. (PS4 has a real name request feature, if you didn't know). OK, let that slide after telling him no. "Facebook?"
No.
"Come on, do you think you ugly or sumthin?"
Uh, no. I met you literally 20 minutes ago.
"Well that doesn't mean you can't be friends.  YouTube account?"
I'm not giving you that either.
"Why not? I bet you're pretty.  Age? I'm 18"
Mid fifties. (Eventually tell him I'm 28, still a lie)
"Oh." (He stops with the personal questions here, guess I was too old.)

Went back to actually playing the game, and the dude starts rapping/singing. I tell him to stop so I can actually hear the game, he doesn't. I had been on his friends list for less than 3 hours.

And that's the story of the shortest lived PSN friend I ever had.

Actual Title: Motherfucking Kaiju Edition

Short blog post today because I'm about to go see Godzilla and because I'm lazy and because I (almost) never actually write these things in advance. Also it wasn't really happening because of a variety of other minor and major stresses revolving around recent workplace shifts and a few other sitch-ee-a-shuns. But seriously, Motherfucking Godzilla and video games, these are my plans today. Awesome right?

I like a game that strikes a happy medium between strategy and discovery. I want to be able to play my way, but I also want to devise what will be my way within the rules of the game. A game that allows a player to do anything at all and succeed does not have variety or choice. It might look like those things are there, but your choice does not really exist if it has no meaning or impact. Going the other way around, but ending at the same point, is a game that allows no choice at all. Everything must be done a certain way, and attempts to go another way are ultimately futile. Any choices you might attempt to make do not result in a different path through the game.

This is why games like Armored Core, Souls, The Last of Us Multiplayer, and Warframe appeal to me so much. There is you, a goal, and a set of rules to play by. Outside of that, you can play the way you want to, as long as you're also playing smart and prepared to accept the challenge. Maybe you work something out for yourself that's different from what everyone else is doing. Even games like Battlefield and Call of Duty have this, though they are more limited in their options. They may all be very different games, but the ability for me to create my own solutions, and for other people to do something completely different, is there in all of them.

Soul Sacrifice is another one that gives you plenty of tools. There is a maximum DPS setup, but there are other options with their own benefits. I've had fun with a Stone Armor, Golem, Vacuum, Bombs setup that allows me to create a zone of explosions and giant slaps. Delta has a lot more spells, and a new, higher rank for the existing spells and the new. I can't imagine there are no new combos out in all of that.

I also think Minimum looks pretty cool. I'm not into the whole MOBA thing, but I am into shooty-swordy multiplayer. This doesn't look quite as awesome as Space marine, but I've only watched a little gameplay so far. It's definitely faster paced than Space Marine, so maybe they prioritized different things. Now if only it was going to be on PS4…

Seriously, all the games

Whew, are you guys ready for this? I don't think you are properly ready for this. No, really, this is a great day in PS FNF history. Check it out. 10 games are being hosted tonight. It is a great effing day for our Czar of the FNF, Trev.  He's been doing this for an amazing number of years, and I certainly wouldn't be a part of this wonderful community without the awesomeness that is him and the Friday Night Fight.

In commemoration of this splendiferous event, I ask, what are some of your fondest memories of Trev (AKA ElZilcho) in the FNF-verse? Did he give you a new recipe for pan seared unicorn meat with a garlic aioli sauce? Did he teach you how to scope up in shooting games? Did he, perhaps, show you his moves in some fighting games?  Please, share your experiences with us concerning our wonderful overlord!

I'm not really supposed to swear in the titles anymore. It's frowned upon.

Okay, so first thing's first, I'm drinking right now because beer is delicious and fuck you that's why. I drink therefore I'm drunk. Anyway, that's out of the way onto the actual post. [EDIT: I'm less drunk now and just grumpy. I would reeeeeaaaally love it if the Blog Editor had not completely borked the hell out of the blog I typed up...]

Earlier this week Sony threw down with a pretty fantastic sale, the "Golden Week Sale" I'm not actually sure what it celebrates but apparently it's four national holidays so... Awesome, hurrah, bananas. But glancing through that list, seriously there are some worthwhile deals there, and if you're a PS+ member (and if you aren't I'd really genuinely like to know why you're not) they're borderline Steam level sales and are well worth a once over.

To Highlight a few:

Armored Core: Verdict Day -- $5 (Is this worth picking up at this price?)
Metal Gear Solid HD Collection -- $12 on PS3, $9 on Vita
Muramasa Rebirth --$7.50 (Though Sadly the DLC is not on sale)
Persona 4 Golden -- $15
Tales of Symphonia Chronicles -- $10.00
Zone of the Enders HD Collection -- $10.50 (Also probably where my last chunk of PSN Credit is going pending other folks' thoughts and verification of having only $10 or having $15)

You can glance through the rest of the deals here:
LIIIIIIIINK

Regardless these deals are pretty phenomenal and it's exciting to see the folks over at Sony really pushing some great stuff at really amazing deals. Thoughts on other awesome sales? Comments on the games available here? Recommendations? Share them in the comments!
