PS Friday Night Fights: Stop Designing UX

Friends don't let programmers design GUIs

I wish programmers weren't expected to design GUI's...

So I'm done with the 'get shit done yesterday' weeks, and now I'm to 'get shit done by 10pm tonight.' I can never win. I have to work with a business partner on a plugin to their product (god I hate that word) that brings shit that our tool makes into their final product. I have no idea how it works, and they just kind of threw me at it, while the guy who usually works on stuff like this is gone to Korea for 2 weeks. This is not making for a fun time.... Not to mention their tool has about a thousand windows that all look like they were created by programmers (ie, the image above). It hurts me inside.

In gaming news, I platinumed Far Cry 4, and it was the first game I have ever platinumed, so I've got that going for me.

Like always, if you want to hear me ramble off and curse at things that were totally fucking bullshit, you can view the FNF stream later tonight, either at KymikoLoco or Trev's streams. Hope to see you there!KymikoLoco

Welcome to the Playstation side of Friday Night Fights! Every Friday, members of the community get together online to play games and all you need to join is a user account. Down below, you'll find a list of games that we'll play tonight along with the times they'll start, the people that you should hit up for invites, and any other information that you may need.

If you want to play, leave a comment with the games from the schedule you want to play and your PSN name. You should also send a PSN friend request to the host and mention your username here in the message so they know you're one of the cool people and not just some random friend request.

If your favorite game isn't on the schedule, host it yourself! You just need to give us the game, start time, and your PSN name so people know what, when and who. It's also wise to list DLC requirements, game or server names, and anything else people might need to join just so you don't need to message it to everyone individually. Last minute additions in the comments here are fine, but games can also be added earlier in the week by visiting the forums and finding the thread with the coming Friday's date. Adding a game there ensures it's on the blog from the moment it goes up.

PS Friday Night Fights: Peer Pressure Edition

It's okay. He's a doctor.

I picked up Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- (Guilty Gear titles are still Guilty Gear titles, btw) and there are some good and bad points to it. I know, what a thought, a game not being perfect. It looks amazing. There are times you don't know it isn't HD sprites, and there are times you wish it was still the 2D just because Arc's art was so good. The online lobbies are more than we're ever going to need for FNF, and about as easy to figure out as doing your own taxes for the first time, but the system is certainly robust and I can appreciate it for people who want that sort of thing. The character selection is a bit limited, with certain omissions that I don't quite understand. There's no Johnny, no Dizzy, no Anji, no Bridget, no Jam, Testament, Baiken, or Kliff. The models even show up in story mode for some of them. There is such a big pile of Guilty Gear characters to choose from and I feel like they could really have worked in a few more. However, I think a more limited set of characters can lead to a better game because there is more room for each character to cover without feeling as though they overlap. You don't need five different zoning characters to only have one of them be really good. Just have the one that's good and fuse in some of the ideas that would have been other characters. I'm willing to trade number of characters for making those characters more unique, and I think Xrd does that.

A new trailer for Evolve showed up on my Youtube feed, titled Ready or Not. I know what they meant, but it also very conveniently covered how I expect the game to be released. Get it? Ready or not. Aren't I clever? Really though, my faith in new online games, especially games relying on the easily screwed up asymmetrical multiplayer is effectively nonexistent. And then they've got all that day-one DLC... What I've seen so far is a game with little retail content, a mountain of DLC, and more DLC to come. You can apparently get a fifth monster if you spend a hundred dollars on the game, but only on PC and not right now. It will be out some vague time after launch, but you can pay for it right now. That sounds so great that I'm skipping Evolve. I don't think I'd even play it for free, since I'd still have to spend more on DLC than I would on a brand new retail game to get the rest of the content. Trev

PS Friday Night Fights: It's a Good Life Edition

Don't you see how weird that looks?

This week on Tales from the Podcast: Kim thinks that works, but I'm pretty sure that June Cleaver didn't have an opinion on garbage randos that are too stupid to PTFO and refuse to GTFO. Imagine the idyllic, technicolor class of fictional suburbia, combined with yelling shit at XxJuNkInDaTr0nK420xX because they're 3 and 17 in TDM. You can't do both. Not at the same time. It's too weird. It should really be more like "Golly gee, mister! We oughta get B if, it's not too much trouble." shouldn't it? Or maybe some curiosity about why there are videogames in the kitchen, because you could get away with that sort of thing back then. Plus you've really got to consider that all those bad thoughts about people on the internet would have Bill Mumy send you into the cornfield like that jack-in-the-box guy.

Now that I've written that, I really wish there were games in my kitchen so I could screw around without all the walking back and forth. I just barely get to doing whatever in a game and then I need to go back and stir something again. What a hassle. Trev

PS Friday Night Fights: (Big Bad Bill) Is Sweet William Now Edition

It’s a little weird that the newest guy to join the FNF blog team would be the one eulogizing “Chilly” Bill Platt. I don’t know the guy well. I know his nickname makes him seem like a background character in Top Gun. I know he’s an absurd Nintendo fanatic. I also know he has a kid arriving shortly so it only makes sense that he’d step back to put his affairs in order given his life is basically over now. He’s got a real life Tamagotchi on it’s way so that will take up a lot of valuable gaming and Amiibo shopping time.

So fare thee well, ChillyBilly. I will always remember the one time I played with you. It was a game of Battlefield 4 that was just about to end. You didn’t join the party and got sorted onto the opposing team. I fragged you with a pistol and then left to play Warframe. The End. See you in the Basement, big guy! Good luck with the kid.

In the meantime, our new Community Playdate Manager is Mike “PhilKenSebben” Martin. I hope you brought lube because you can’t borrow mine. (Yes, I have lube. Lots of lube. I’m like a sexual MacGyver.)

So, anyway… games!

PS Friday Night Fights: Work... Work Never Ends

This is how I've felt the past week

I'm hopefully finally done with the intense 'get shit done yesterday' kind of work I've been doing the past 2 weeks, and I can relax and peruse the forums a bit more, and play a few more games.

I'm (im)patiently waiting for a Planetside 2 Beta invite that I signed up for, but I'm fairly certain I wouldn't play it anyways, so I'm failing to see the point of me waiting. If you want to hear me ramble off and curse at things that were totally fucking bullshit, you can view the FNF stream later tonight, either at KymikoLoco or Trev's streams. Hope to see you there!KymikoLoco

PS FNF: Science Fiction Friday Nights Edition!

This is some slick concept art for the brutally murdered Star Wars 1313 game. Mourn, mourn like you mean it. But hey, at least we have the new Battlefront game coming out!

It’s always interesting seeing games that were canceled, the concept art, sometimes we even get to see gameplay. It doesn’t always happen but it can be pretty neat when it does. The concept art for Destiny was just the most stunning thing but in reality has been less utterly amazing with hints here and there of what was suggested and more in line with reality. Lots of great fun to be had though. Come join us tonight!

In other news I recently finished yet another science fiction series (The Culture Sequence) and am looking for more stuff to read, if you have some suggestions please leave them in the comments so I’ll have something more to read! CornflakeJustice

Playstation Friday Night Fights: I miss Journey Edition

> VIDEO GAAAAAAAAAAEMS

Nothing much to report this week folks! Video games are happening, we avoided a minor uprising against the FNF system (I'm kidding, please don't hurt us), I learned that if you're kicked from a PSN party you're actually banned from said party, I got some new guns in Destiny and learned an important lesson about tactical sitting in the process. Also people never listen to me anyway and you're not here to listen to me blather on about nothingness. Let's get to the goods eh?

PS Friday Night Fights: Happy New Panties! ...YEAR. I mean, YEAR.

You’re the best! Around! Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down!

Being a lifelong fan of the weird, transgressive, bonkers and otherwise not acceptable in polite company means I cross paths with Japanese culture an awful lot. The films of Takashi Miike and Shion Sono. The short stories of Edogawa Rampo. The insanity of Junji Ito’s manga. The list is endless. I unapologetically own Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad on 360 AND Wii AND I own the movie (which are all pretty terrible). So when you tell me there’s a video game on PS4 about fighting vampires in broad daylight by stripping them to their skivvies in the busy streets of Akibahara, Japan… I say: sign me up!

Enter Akiba’s Trip, a 3D brawler with with some romance visual novel stuff thrown in. It should be noted that the game is really best played on the Vita. The areas are so tiny that it feels like you’re in loading screens as often as the game itself. The actual fighting feels clunky and imprecise. On a technical level it’s not a great game. But as a delivery system for the batshit crazy, it’s loaded to the gills. The PS4 exclusive Twitch integration and the Toybox mode (as well as some technical upgrades) are nice, though. The cast is likable and the dub is actually pretty decent. Chaining a ten hit combo of pantaloon snatching is never not worth a laugh… and in a faithfully recreated Akibahara, complete with fliers for existing IRL locations, too.

I love that I live in a world where weird shit like this gets made and, having switched from Microsoft to Sony for this console generation, I’m sure to get plenty more. Never stop being you, Glorious Nippon.

Oh, and apparently there was a holiday too. Ionno.

PS Friday Night Fights: (Late) End of Year Edition

Or this snowman will murder you. Or Happy New Year. Whatever.

Merry Christmas, mother truckers. I'm posting this at 9pm because I've been with family the whole week. I missed the forum post because I think we went to Disney? I don't know, it's all a fucking blur at this point. Got back from the Space Center a few hours ago, and I am dead tired from driving to Disney one day and then cooking a 5 person Christmas meal from scratch (2nd time cooking for that many people, both times were this week...), and then driving to Cocoa Beach today. You must forgive me, for my flesh is weak and crumbly, and I'm still not engaged <3

In other news, my PS4 20th Anniversary just came in the mail today, I picked it up on the way home from KSC, and it's still in the box, waiting for me to make a terrible unboxing video because I fucking can and one of you little shits wanted it. I'll try to not forget about the next time I'm scheduled to do the post. Otherwise you can slay me, for I am a squishy (drunk) dragon who surprisingly put this post together in 20 minutes. PS FNF: /Endrant Mostly...

Hit the weakpoint for massive damage! Until the weak point falls off at least.

I think I’m slowly getting tired of being angry at video games. Destiny’s RNG is frustrating, Rockstar keeps delaying content apparently with no consequences, I feel like RNG is showing up more and more frequently in games I’m currently playing, apparently even Killzone: Shadow Falls is going to be subject to a class action lawsuit because the multiplayer was blurrier than expected for 1080p. I’m going to try and play games and not complain about them. Don’t hold me to it for more than a weak, but that’s my goal for next year.

Now, on to the show! CornflakeJustice

PS Friday Night Fights: There Will Be DOSH Edition

Oh boy!

I'm pretty excited about Killing Floor 2 coming to PS4. I don't have much more to say than that, so I'll hit you with a quote instead.

"In other words, Tripwire is not being "consolized", rather we plan on "Tripwirizing" console gamers. The time has come when we can put games on the consoles on our terms, without compromise, and we're excited for this new frontier and the experiences we'll be able to provide gamers."

They sound like good folks. Trev

PS Friday Night Fights: The Telltale Heart Edition

The heart wants what it wants: all yr free time.

So, all my free time recently has been hijacked by The Binding Of Issac: Rebirth and Telltale’s two new serial adventure games, Tales From The Borderlands and Game Of Thrones. I bought Shadow Of Mordor and The Evil Within for Black Friday. I would like to play them… but nope! Just more Binding Of Issac, please. I’ve definitely scratched the surface of the game but there’s still a boatload of stuff left to do. And McMillan and Nicolis are apparently going to work on a new expansion. So that will be at least another 100 hours of my time spoken for, I imagine.

Considering that the Borderlands franchise doesn’t have much story, I had zero expectations for Tales From The Borderlands but it turned out to be a lot of fun. Considering the emotionally fraught survival of The Walking Dead, the neo-noir of Fables and now the grim fantasy world of Game Of Thrones, it was nice to play a Telltale game that was just… fun. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who hasn’t played a Borderlands game before but it is a much needed expansion of that universe into something other than a series of jokes and pop culture references.

Meanwhile, Game Of Thrones does a great job wedging it’s story into the events of the third book and has the kind of shocking cliffhanger we’ve grown to expect from the series but it also feels lighter on non-conversation related content. Other than a couple basic QTC’s, it’s all conversation. TFtB did a much better job at balancing story with doing stuff. It’s still very engrossing but easily the least game-y Telltale game I’ve played thus far.

If nothing else, at least it proves that Peter Dinklage’s VO work in Destiny stinks because they mostly just gave him gibberish to try and make sense of. He’s perfectly on point here as Tyrion.

Anyway. On with the games! The Defenestrator
