Friday Night Fights: Love And Monsters Edition

Hello and welcome to the first official Friday Night Fights post of this weird new era. As I write this, I'm currently re-watching Spring, an indie horror romance that was released recently. Normally putting the words "horror" and "romance" next to each other you end up with some boring, pretentious Gothic horror movie about self-loathing vampires. In this case, it's really a mix of Before Sunrise and H.P. Lovecraft. I really love it. Partially because it plays to my interests (I'm a huge Lovecraft fan) and partially because it manages to do something unique. The two leads do bang up work, especially Nadia Hilker. I don't want to spoil it overmuch because it's currently free to stream on Amazon Prime Instant and you should put aside two hours with a loved one and watch it. Or be like me and watch it on your own and momentarily forget your crushing lonliness and the steadily increasing speed at which death is approaching. You know, happy shit like that.

I like that people are using genre film as a jump off to mix and match pieces from other genres. A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night is another recent movie that mixes horror and romance, but it has a distinctly more art house Jim Jarmusch-ian style. It actually bills itself as an Iranian vampire spaghetti western. Possibly a smaller potential audience but still a good watch.

At any rate, I'm not going to be hosting anything this week due to being a broke ass wage slave who couldn't afford to re-up his PSN account due to a couple emergency purchases (pants and shoes over PSN). However, feel free to jump in with your own game. I had a great time with DepressedOptimist playing Rocket League on Sunday. I got why people have gotten so into it but it didn't really click until my first public game. So simple but so perfect. Car soccer. I love being a gamer.

So, if you're interested in hosting for Friday Night Fights or Weekend Warriors, leave a comment below with the following information:

Game (System)
Time (EST, please)
Your Disqus/C-Blog name
Your GamerTag
(Optional: Twitch ID if you intend to stream, additional information as necessary)

Again, this is a PS FNF blog but we're currently accepting hosts for games on any system: Microsoft, Nintendo, PC OR Sony. Hope to see you out there.

Friday Night Fights Emergency Update: Pardon Our Apocalypse Edition

In case you hadn't noticed the sudden disappearance of links on the front page, the Destructoid Forums ("We Had Them") have been shuttered. Everyone got rickets and died. It was horrible. While I'm sure Niero has a plan to bring them back at some point down the line in a more tricked out form with better front page integration and less open hostility, that leaves Friday Night Fights in a weird position.

The forums were where the planning for our weekly community playdates got organized. There was already talk of consolidating them somehow to make things more user friendly for both the organizers and the community members but, as of now, things are up in the air. Community Manager Mike Martin is currently pitching ideas and trying to find a way to make things work. The quick fix is to gather hosts via C-Blogs. So, until we hear otherwise, Nanashi and I will be writing blogs a couple times a week looking for potential hosts and Mike will take all that info for his usual Friday afternoon post. This includes ALL systems, not just PlayStation.

So, if you're interested in hosting a game, just leave a comment below with the following information:

Game (System)
Time (Eastern Standard Time, please)
Your Disqus/C-Blog Name
Your Gamertag
Your Twitch ID if you intend to stream it

Also, Weekend Warriors is still a thing. It hasn't gotten much love lately but not everyone is home on a Friday night. Some people go outside and do things. So if you want to host a community get-together during the weekend, leave that information below as well and it will be added to the Friday post.

We'll keep you updated as the situation changes. Friday Night Fights are just too big a legacy to slough off. Nanners and I picked up the torch from Trev and the gang, who poured blood, sweat and tears into keeping everything together and giving Dtoid a place to relax and hang out together. Some of the most fun I've gaming has been on these Friday night get togethers I want to keep that tradition going, even if the delivery method changes.

I will be taking this Friday night off as I intend to drink coma-inducing amounts of Irish whiskey and mourn my dysfunctional, angry, yet weirdly loving cyber family of nearly three years... but I will be hosting some Rocket League on Sunday. So come by and see if I've regained the powers of speech yet.

And that's it. Whenever we learn something new, we'll let you know. In the meantime, I will eulogize the Destructoid Forums (2006 to 2015) the only way I'm emotionally capable of: through song. I think this one pretty much sums up the entire Forum, for good and ill. Thanks for letting me be a broken weirdo with you guys.

PS Friday Night Fights: Daken Can Suck My Short And Curlies Edition

I should be asleep. This blog should have been written and posted already. But stupid fucking Snowmageddon pulled ahead of me by a couple hundred points right at the end of this event in Marvel Puzzle Quest that knocked me out of the top 150 and ruined my goddamn chances at getting that Psylocke card with the blue special ability that I really wanted. So I was desperately playing low level missions trying to make up because I ran out of my allotment of heals and I just. Couldn't. Get there. Instead I get an ultra common two star Hawkeye and some Iso-8 as a consolation prize. I am doing a jerk off motion at my computer screen right now.

Maybe I should back up.

Marvel Puzzle Quest is a free-to-play browser/iOS/Android Match 3 game by the makers of the original Puzzle Quest games. It's literally just Puzzle Quest with a Marvel skin. Which is good. It's the rare Match 3 that requires actual strategy to beat. You need to use your team to their best advantage and be aware of enemy abilities as well and try to block them from getting the matches they need to activate them. It's become a phone addiction the same way Binding Of Issac: Rebirth and OlliOlli 2 were for my Vita.

Alas, I seem to have hit the ceiling. I'm not adverse to paying for stuff in free-to-play games if I enjoy the product. When I was laid off, I played almost nothing but Warframe and felt no compunction about giving them some bucks for their efforts. Same here. I'll buy some extra spots for my roster and maybe some characters. However, because it's a random draw, usually you end up with crap one star or two star characters you either don't want or already have. Those cool characters? Star Lord, Devil Dinosaur, Blade, Elektra... you have literally a .3% chance of drawing them. So those high level missions with the big payout where you're fighting level 120 characters? Yeah, forget them. You may get one really sweet card every once in a while but you'll never see another one unless you're willing to compete with the OCD pay-to-win types with tons of disposable income and time. The prices are prohibitively expensive for a working stiff. Also, they're still regurgitating the Dark Reign event, which happened way back in '08/'09, so I hope you get used to fighting Daken, Bullseye and Moonstone. A LOT. Like CONSTANTLY.

All the same, it's a perfect bus ride game. I have a two hour morning commute by bus so I can burn through my allotted number of lives on the way to work and then again on the way home when everything's recharged. I have a pretty respectable stable... but that's mostly because I'm pouring all my Iso-8 (the easily obtained in-game currency) into maxing out a few characters. There are constantly multiple events going on with ultra-rare character prizes for people who place in the top 150. The game sorts everyone into groups of 1000, so chances are if you play regularly, you'll end up in the 200's without much effort. It's just that I've hit the ceiling where I'd have to really sink some dough into the game to get any further.

I have a few games on pre-order for my Vita but until then, I'm just gonna indulge my addiction. Who knows, maybe in a few months I'll have that souped up Squirrel Girl I've been dying for...

Anyway, let's play games!

PS Friday Night Fights: More Skateboarding Edition

I feel like I've gone a little bit head over heels for skating again and it's a bit too much. At some point this is going to have to die down (not out though!) because other more important shit will come along. I've already had skating interrupt two friend's birthday's and that's not cool. And now it's getting in the way of my working out, with a fucked up wrist I can't put a lot of pressure on I won't be able to do my workout routine today and maybe even tomorrow. Sigh but as Louis CK said, for now weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Seriously it's fun and I'm not ashamed at doing what I want to do which includes getting angry at cats who keep my up all night so I won't be able to wake up proper and go to the best skatepark in town for 6am (seriously cats suck about this and if you venture down to the basement you've probably seen me bitching about them) but fuck that I did it now. Fun fact: skateparks are desolate in the early hours of the morning, that seems to be when a lot of professional skaters go to parks and spots to film too. That way they don't get bothered and whatnot. But for the layman noob like myself it's just great to have all that space to do whatever you like. I could dry hump the beautiful manny pad for all anyone cares or can do about it. Seriously I love this park's manny pads. Just the right height, and at about 30 feet long it gives you a nice challenge to try to get all the way through. There's also a smaller and shorter one that's good for practicing on. But point is, if I made a skatepark it'd be all manny pads of different sizes and variety, and ramps to get speed for those said manny pads. Manny pads yo.

One thing I really like about skateboarding and how the atmosphere has changed since I stopped skating last time is how friendly everyone is now. Any skate park or spot where there are other skaters they will be talking and inviting you for conversation. It's a great opportunity to make new friends and also talk about all sorts of shit. That deck your riding, what size is that? Did you see the new Enjoi video, I can't find it online. You're not ollie-ing properly, here's what you should be doing. All sorts of shit. It's cool to have people to talk to about the thing you both enjoy and I swear it was never like this for me before. Maybe it's that I'm older and no one wanted to talk to a teenager way back when but that can't be it either. It's gotta be then that skateboarding is just this meritocracy: you show up every day to the same park/spot and don't give up, they'll like you. You have to keep skating even when you ate it and your arm hurts like hell, try again. There's a certain respect for that, even if you aren't Daewon Song or Rodney Mullen or Chris Cole or Riley Hawk or Tony Hawk, and that's what I respect most about this sport and what will probably destroy my body. Oh well.

So what else do we have to talk about? I like Eric Andre. Watch this video and then this one.

Oh speaking of cats you know what's awesome when a cool cat shows his/her face to FNF and suddenly you have new blood to play with an awesome game you love/haven't seen on FNF in awhile. See the first image below but that finally happened for me, Krigo and I will be lobby hosting Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown and he'll probably butt stomp me but it will be fun. We played Daytona USA last time and that was a blast too. Also speaking of games I haven't mp'd in awhile with anyone.. But also Phil and I need to do some Starhawk sometime. Shit is good and I know I've been telling him we should FNF it for ages now. Note to self, FNF Starhawk. I need to pick up the new Mortal Kombat too so I can get wrecked by Phil and whoever else, seriously it's a bit of a disgrace to not have that FNF'd here yet, just saying.

Lastly on the menu tonight I love me some YS there's no lying about that. I finally got to starting Origins (gifted to me by awesome Ooktar!) and it's a thrill to be playing that. Seriously since Celceta I've not found another RPG that gets close to the feeling I get playing this game. Celceta was so good I just want a new Ys game or even Celceta ported to PS4 but until then I can go back to the already released ones. Origins is almost everything I loved about playing Celceta: goooood story/interesting characters, killer soundtrack, awesome combat that isn't turn based like a lot of other JRPGs, lovely art style. It's the perfect package for me save for one thing and that is that I do not want to be playing this on a PC keyboard. Bleh. It works so poorly this game was clearly made for a controller but playing it (and coupled with my now bad wrist) I feel like it's going to give me carpal tunnel. But still I play it. I will need to look into if it has controller support on steam. If not give up and wait for it to be ported to Playstation. No I'm kidding but controller support would be just peachy if otherwise totally unlikely.

I guess a better title for this blog would've been "I love to do shit that hurts myself".

Oh well on to games.

PS Friday Night Fights: Open World Gaming Blues Edition

Waifu.

It's a lazy week here at PS FNF. Our lovely boy Nanners is off having birthday shenanigans. Probably doing illegal substances and punching policemen, as young men do. So there's just a couple games tonight.

I'm deep in the grips of a Marvel Puzzle Quest addiction (gotta catch 'em all) but I've still been finding time to play Witcher 3 and Payday 2 on the weekends. Initially, I was having trouble getting into Witcher 3. I'm getting increasingly burned out on open world games. Even when the mechanics are solid, it's really hard to tell a story well when you have to factor in the fact that the player may have just spent ten hours, exploring, hunting animal pelts or climbing radio towers in-between story missions. It gets really hard to invest.

Witcher 2 had areas to play around in but it was very focused on the overarching story in a way I liked quite a bit. Witcher 3, on the other hand, is very much in the mold of the modern open world game. There's endless question marks on the map begging to be explored, but at the expense of the main story. People had the same problem with Dragon Age: Inquisition where people would get bored trying to explore everything in the opening area when they should have moved on hours before. However, the game left that information to you instead of prodding you forward. Witcher 3 makes the same mistake. It has a suggested level for the main quest but doesn't force the issue. As a result, I wandered around Velen for far too long and ignored Skellige until I was about level twenty. By then, I was really invested in the regicide plot but it came to a screeching halt because I ignored the other part of the main plot and the quests dried up. Rather than go to Skellige ready to explore another gorgeous new area, I was annoyed and rushing because I wanted to get back to the part of the story that interested me more.

CD Projekt Red knows how to tell a compelling story. Not only is there the gritty realities of life as a Witcher but social atmosphere and the witch hunts for mages and minorities. And Geralt's love life, of course. However, in presenting it in an open world form, they gave me too much freedom and I lost the momentum driving me forward.

That's not to say all is lost. I powered through and I'm still enjoying myself. I just would have enjoyed it a lot better if the developers had a mission that forced you to go to Skellige to keep the narrative moving instead of leaving it purely up to the players to choose. L.A. Noire, for instance, had absolutely NOTHING to do in it's open world but that allowed them to tell a really strong, focused story. Red Dead Redemption found a different way around it.

A great example of CD Projekt Red's storytelling chops are in the romantic triangle between Geralt, Yennifer and Triss. Yennifer is headstrong and impulsive. She does as she pleases and worries about the consequences later. Triss is more grounded and level-headed. Both are strong characters, but in different ways. The idea that Geralt and Yen can't tell if their hot-and-cold relationship is the product of a spell or just two strong personalities was, cleverly, never really answered. Did the Djinn really remove the "curse" or was the cruel twist that Djinn's always use that there was never any spell to begin with? It's ultimately the player's decision if there's something more between them or not.

Personally, I'm a Triss 'shipper. Yen, to me, is a lust object. She's never going to change and that makes any relationship with her fraught. Triss is living in the real world and can aknowledge the consequences of her actions. Also, Yen likes to fuck on a stuffed unicorn. Bearskin rugs, okay, sure, but on a dead stuffed animal? That's just plain weird. And awkward. (How the hell do they stay on there?)

I'm enjoying the game but there's still work to be done in terms of how to effectively tell a story in an open world setting.

Anyway... games!

PS Friday Night Fights: Life "Improvements" Edition

PSYCHE!!! There really is no serious life improvements I have to discus here today. Instead I can just say that things are vaguely looking up for me. What this means right now is not very easy to say because it is just how I am feeling. It could be that my gut knows something and something good is coming. Or it could just be that summer is here, the undisputable best season bro and it'll be a happy couple of months partying, skating and playing good games. I have however decided to revamp my work out a little. Not that I'm trying to turn myself into a muscle bound meathead but I'd like to think my effort and dedication could potentially produce something. Since the last time I've been regularly working out I have added a pretty important factor to my routine, and that is playing with weights. Normally I would have just set a max weight and like an idiot do a bunch of reps with that. Now I'll have a more dynamic approach by varying that across sets of reps. Anyway this probably won't change too much but I can tell you I already feel like it's an imporvement, my arms and chest are nice and tight, way it ought to be, tighter than my workouts made me previously.

Additionally I've run into a little trouble with my skateboard wheels, the one stubborn wheel seemed to be spinning rather slow. It was slow to accelerate and then it stopped much sooner. Something was up so I got to taking apart the thing to find I've been ripped off sorta. A month ago I went in to to get some new skateboard bearings. The old ones had seen better days. Despite going out of my way to buy special bike grease and harmful chemicals to clean them, two were not salvageable because they had rusted to absolute shit. Rust is the no turning back of bearing condition. I was pretty bummed, especially considering I worked really hard to clean and grease the remaining ones and thought I did a good job. Well I did an okay job, they spin, even fast but only when made to spin. By themselves they are very resistant and won't spin if you flick them with your finger. Anyway I went to the skateshop because I just couldn't skate on three wheels (only 6 bearings) and wanted to buy a new pack.

I was going to buy the standard, Bones Reds, just like I've always rode. Actually the new middle tier of Reds that the shop guy pushed on me nearly eight months ago were really good quality for the money you pay. But I digress. This time, some intern (interns suck) pushed a higher level of bearings on me, a level that was beyond me for a long time just because I didn't have the extra fifty bucks or so lying around. I thought what the hell and just went with it. Bones Swiss, they're some of the best quality bearings you can stick on your skateboard. Now I can testify to this, it was a great choice. They last long, I've had plenty of water scares but not a single indication of rust to be found on any of them, a month later. But this is where the problem comes up. One of my bearings, one of the ones from the slow spinning wheel, was my old Reds. I remember I had brought them into the shop in case I could just get two loosies and not have to buy a whole pack. I'll defend the guy a bit the two are almost identical except that the Bones Swiss Say "Bones Swiss 808" while the other ones say "Reds China Bones" on them. Otherwise identical.

Yeah one of the bearings fell off the counter and he couldn't find it. Or I didn't feel like waiting. Or whatever happened. The old ones are still in the bag I brought them in and none of them are the Swiss. So the dude must've by mistake put one of my old bearings into the wheel along with the seven Swiss ones I bought and the eighth was the one that dropped. That really just sucks and it's a shame I only just realized till now but I'll be going in to see what I can get to alleiviate this situation. Of course I'm not a dick and don't want to get anyone fired but I at least want something for the trouble. It feels like I've been violated. Well anyway I will say again. Up until now when the wheel has started acting up, The Swiss bearings have been absolutely phenomenal. 10/10 would buy again... just an entire pack. Haha Next time I'll just make sure to put them on myself, it's not really that hard to do.

I do wonder though, there may have been a few moments when my board seemed to go apeshit randomly. A couple moments I thought one of the wheels stalled on me while skating (worst thing to happen honsetly) maybe that was what happened and it was the old bearing. Maybe I really did a shit job and should from now on just be safe rather than sorry in trying to clean out my old bearings and making a death trap for myself.

Anyway I'm really grasping for straws here. It's time, you know what time it is.

PS Friday Night Fights: Heist Related Sleep Deprivation Edition

I dunno. It’s late. Have a picture of one of my dogs.

I should have known this was going to happen.

I put a couple hundred hours into the Xbox 360 version of Payday 2 when it came out. It never got the patches or the DLC that were promised (which is for the better in some respects) but it scratched a very specific itch for me not a lot of games can: a truly co-operative shooter with stealth mechanics.

It’s not easy to stealth a heist. Random camera and enemy placement and tricky level design means you will end up in a protracted firefight most of the time… but every once in awhile, the stars align and you get four people who can temporarily mind meld long enough to drop an airplane hangar full of baddies and walk away with bags full of weapons leaving the police none the wiser. And it’s an amazing feeling.

The combat itself is solid and if you have a quartet with skills that compliment each other, it allows each of you to take an important role in how you approach the heist. I prefer the Technician (with some stealth thrown in) but a knowledgeable Mastermind and/or Ghost are imperative if you want to get into that bank vault without tripping an alarm or letting an errant civilian call the cops. And the Tank? Well, he’s just there to pull your asses out of the fire when it inevitably goes wrong.

Unfortunately, the PS4 release means that I have been staying up WAY too late and over-caffeinating during the day because I keep thinking I can squeeze in just ONE MORE HEIST before bed. Then I look at the clock and I need to be up in four hours.

While they get all the DLC they could want, PC players have been acting as sort of a test group for Overkill’s various patches and tweaks. For this newest console iteration, they seem to have ironed out many of the exploits but over-corrected in other respects. The RNG aspect to getting weapon mods and masks is still terrible and exploits helped ameliorate that by letting people spam the Ukrainian Job in 30 seconds for another run on the roulette wheel. You could get beaucoup XP doing a speed run of the three day Rats mission in about 15 minutes. None of that is an option now. Granted, they’ve given you a few ways to bump up your XP through other means but there’s still a ton of waiting around to get a decent mask or, god forbid, a silencer. It’s certainly not perfect but, damn, it’s addictive. Sadly, however, that means falling asleep at my desk at work during the day.

So, anyway… games!

Welcome to the Playstation side of Friday Night Fights! Every Friday, members of the community get together online to play games and all you need to join is a user account. Down below, you'll find a list of games that we'll play tonight along with the times they'll start, the people that you should hit up for invites, and any other information that you may need.

If you want to play, leave a comment with the games from the schedule you want to play and your PSN name. You should also send a PSN friend request to the host and mention your username here in the message so they know you're one of the cool people and not just some random friend request.

If your favorite game isn't on the schedule, host it yourself! You just need to give us the game, start time, and your PSN name so people know what, when and who. It's also wise to list DLC requirements, game or server names, and anything else people might need to join just so you don't need to message it to everyone individually. Last minute additions in the comments here are fine, but games can also be added earlier in the week by visiting the forums and finding the thread with the coming Friday's date. Adding a game there ensures it's on the blog from the moment it goes up.

PS Friday Night Fights: The Other Guy is Sick Now Edition

Kinda bummed about being sick right now I do not have too much to talk about. I mean I do actually but I'm sick so this is going to be a short one. Also the blog code we use is screwy for some reason so this blog is going to be thrown together much Shistier. In the mean time I want to talk about multiplayer.

Been awhile since I had anything good to MP with on FNF. I'm not trying to shit on FNF in the least bit this is just where the whole "it's not you it's me" line comes into play.. I used to love doing TLOUR with the FNF crew, hell last week I played along with Alpha, Darren, Mrm3n and Kyle. It wasn't that bad, but honestly the game's mp is starting to get really really stale for me. Where I used to look forward to it the idea of playing more is rather dull now. Again no offense to the good friends I've played with but I just can't bring myself to do anymore of it. I even deleted it off my hard drive a few weeks ago to clear space. Whatever we will see, I'll probably join once in awhile I'm not that grinchy.

Then there's Battlefield which is tough to get groups together for. I think people just generally don't like Battlefield 4 anymore that or all the usuals are just too busy nowadays. Sucks those were the funnest FNFs personally. So aside from those two there isn't much for me to contribute. I'm just super hopeful for that next awesome PS4 multiplayer experience that'll hopefully bring a lot of people out of hiding. Right now there doesn't seem to be too much on the horizon. At least not in the near foreseeable future.

However I would be lying if I said there's literally nothing for me to play anymore because that simply isn't true. There are options. First off I have returned to the world of Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. It's good. Not great but very good especially for the purposes of FNF'ing. It is a bit casual to really be a top notch Coop multiplayer but it gets the job done. Defens has been hosting them regularly and I feel bad for not joining him much earlier. It's a fun experience to FNF and I would encourage anyone come join us if you can. Not to mention the EA press conference got me hype, not for the sequel but just to play this one again. The sequel looks dumb considering I think they have you playing as the zombies now. Really in a hoard mode that's who you play as? Don't fix what ain't broke EA!

There's also fighting games. Fighting games come out all the time, because that's where that part of the industry is at. So there's likely an awesome one around the corner I'll get into. They're also good because they seem to call out random people when they hear that someone is hosting a lobby for them. I know for sure that TurboKill wanted to do some fighting games and another person wanted me to host DoA, sorry don't remember who it was. I could probably do that no problem. Fighting games are definitely an option, I just need to get my hands on two things first: a copy of MKX because that's one of my favorite franchises and a good, cheap fight pad for the PS4 so I don't have to put my DS4 through torture. Otherwise I can see myself hosting those for sure.

Anyway, as usual I have rambled on a lot so why don't we take a look at what's being hosted this week?

Games Bro!!

PS Friday Night Fights: TV Party Edition

I need to play Witcher 3 anyway.

Work has me pretty beaten down right now, so I’ll try to keep this brief.

This year has seen a pretty heavy increase in comic book based TV series and I’m just now getting caught up with all of them. Daredevil was, to me, pretty overhyped. The Flash was fun but uneven. Arrow is doing more with their extended cast but trading narrative logic for twists and cliffhangers. Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. introduced an almost entire new cast at the beginning of the season which was, hilariously, more interesting than the original… which says something about how utterly mediocre it is. I refused to watch Constantine on principle and I dance on it's grave.

The big surprise to me was the (somewhat loose) adaptation of iZombie. Writer and showrunner Rob Thomas, much like Kevin Smith or Joss Whedon, has a very love-it-or-hate-it style of dialogue. However, Veronica Mars and Party Down were both fantastic so it was worth a shot. After a very cookie cutter couple of opening episodes, I was surprised to see how much and how quickly it grew into an interesting show with likeable characters and actual character arcs.

There are definitely aspects of it that are a bit too cute (the lead character’s name got changed to Liv Moore. Ha?) but while the characters start off as one thing, the whole status quo gets upended by the end of the season. Someone like Liv’s ex-fiance, Major Lilywhite (no shit, that’s his name), starts out as a bland Abercrombie & Fitch model but by goes through a total transformation once he starts getting nudged into the main plot.

The premise of the show fits the procedural aspects perfectly so the case-of-the-week never feels shoehorned in (unlike, say, Constantine) and they’re perfectly willing to speed things up to get on with the overarching plot. It all culminates in a drum tight humdinger of a season finale. After watching shows like S.H.I.E.L.D. lurch around looking for cheap drama, it was refreshing for a show to let it’s characters earn it.

It’s definitely not for everyone (especially those turned off by super snarky dialogue), but it’s a damn solid genre show. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do this fall with a full season to work with.

So, anyway… games!

PS Friday Night Fights: Real Life Blues Edition

About a million years ago (or so I hoped) I wrote a blog for the cblog recaps covering someone who was out for that day and in the body of the blog I used the space to vent a little. My close buddy had gotten married and decided to move away to be with his wife and kid. How far away you ask? All the way on the other side of the country far away, far enough that seeing him would need to cost lots of cash and time taken out ahead of time.

Since that blog we have reached "time has come" street and "today" avenue. My friend left this morning and will not be coming back realistically for at least another couple years. He said two and a half. Originally I was under the impression that he would be gone after one more semester for his wife but no it's going to be a lot longer before he returns, as he said permanently. It's kind of created a bit of chaos, suddenly his friends and family, myself included have to deal with one less person to hang with/live with/etc. We threw an impromptu party for my friend in honor of leaving and it was pretty awkward. Awkward on the count of him not telling most of us how long he'd be gone for or even that he was married and leaving in the first place. That's my friend though, just lays news on you like that.

Again since that original blog post, from which not a whole lot of time has passed, I have come to terms with the melancholy feeling this is all giving me. Which is good. On the one hand I won't have to make excuses for dealing with this, and I've gotten pretty good at meeting new people and making new friends. I would say that I'm fairly comfortable with the sudden change. Thankfully it doesn't look like I'll have much of a challenge going forward from this point losing a friend. But on the other hand I'm lying if I say that I'm 100%. I am definitely not over it there is still some resonating feeling of sadness. Just the thought "gone for two and a half years" depresses me. And from there I realize this is was being old feels like. I've lost friends before. Some much in the same way, permanently because of moving away and others just because we've grown apart over time. But this time I feel like I'm on the edge of before and after, and a whole lot is going to change from here.

Sounds dramatic, I know sorry but writing about your problems usually does. One other thing about this is that it was fun to be out with some old friends when we took our departing friend for one last hurrah. Kind of makes me want to reconnect with some of them, just to have some connections grounded in "the old days" and high school with the loss of my one good friend that I've not stopped chilling with since high school. But again that sort of feels like this idea of trying to hold on to the old days. It was great to see them and shit I won't lie I was really butthurt one of them wasn't single at the time else I'd be starting something. I can't just look backwards all the time. I won't be hanging out with anyone else I knew in High School and that's fine. It might actually be an important change that will better me later on. I don't know yet, but it's pretty cool to have a place to right all of this out. Thanks for that ladies and gents.

Now I'll just leave this video here, it's been on my mind a lot. I'm including it mainly for the music and because I want to keep living life, enjoying myself and skating.

I did think of one thing to make myself feel a little better, since no one officially put themselves down to hosting last of us and even though I was intending on making this friday a "single player only" kinda night I guess I could come through and host.

And now on to games.

PS Friday Night Fights: BRB Comicon Edition

 Welcome to the Nerd Prom

I’m writing this after my first full day at the Phoenix Comicon, so I’m going to be brief. I’m having a great time. Wish you were here. Etc.

I’m on staff running board games which has the bonus of netting me a free full event pass for doing something that I would have been doing anyway. Though I think I’m the only person hosting games who isn’t part of an organization of some sort. I figure I’ll start brainstorming evil-sounding names for my non-existent group next year.

In the meantime, I need sleep because I have a busy schedule of creeping on cosplay chicks and admiring nerdy stuff I can’t afford in-between running games. Life is hard.

So, anyway… games!
