About

Established in 2004 and previously known as 'Phoenix Freeware Online', Phoenix Online Studios began as a fan group of King's Quest fans coming together to create an unofficial sequel to the series.

Their first project, The Silver Lining, got the attention from publications such as PC Gamer, Computer Gaming World, GameInformer, Edge Magazine, GamesTM, Kotaku, Mtv News and Joystiq. Today, we've been granted an IP license by Activision to publish all 5 episodes free to play.

Phoenix Online Studios is currently working on their first commercial endeavors - Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller, recently released Episode 1 last October, and Episode 2 is about to be released Jan 30th, 2013. The game follows a Boston FBI agent, who lost her brother years ago to a serial killer who was never caught. With post-cognition abilities, Erica Reed is able to see the past of the objects just by touching it, adding a twist in this paranormal adventure game.

Originally the studio consisted a small group of devoted King's Quest fans who worked under the name 'Phoenix Freeware Online', as it started development on a free to play game called 'King's Quest IX: The Silver Lining' (now simply referred to as ''The Silver Lining') it garnered attention from various gaming media, such as PC Gamer, Computer Gaming World, Game Informer, Edge Magazine, GamesTM, Kotaku, MTV News and Joystiq as well as two Cease and Desist letters, one from Vivendi and one from Activision.

Eventually Phoenix Online Studios was finally granted an IP License by Activision allowing the team to publish all 5 episodes free to play. This was a true community effort, given that King's Quest fans all over the world voiced their support for the project, through letters, phone calls and emails.

The game features 3D graphics and it uses a point n' click interface similar to that of the original King's Quest titles, as you guide King Graham on his quest to lift a curse cast on his children by a mysterious cloaked figure you'll return to familiar locations as well as re-acquaint yourself with old friends.

As the end of The Silver Lining's development process neared, POStudios began working on its first commercial endeavor, attaining financial support through a successful kickstarter campaign, it was there POStudios unveiled their next project, Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller, with famed videogame writter Jane Jensen (of Gabriel Knight fame) as a story consultant.

Cognition is a chilling noir-themed point n' click adventure game that follows Erica reed, a Boston-based FBI agent, haunted by the unsolved case of a serial killer who took her brother’s life. Possessing post-cognition abilities, she is able to see an object's past by touching it, adding a new twist to the genre.

Though the game was played and reviewed by critics and fans alike it would soon receive the praise from Robert Williams herself, who had this to say about it:

"The game is very true to the original series and features many of the storylines and characters, especially of King's Quest VI. I found it beautiful and fun to play. I, too, like many other fans, would like to see how this story unfolds."

Cognition has also received praised from fans and critics alike, having won the 2d-x' 'excellency award', Inc Gamers' Reader Awards for Best Adventure game of 2012 and being ranked the 4th best indie adventure game of 2012 by Indie Games.
