So as you may have heard, there was a rumor that Jet Grind/Set Radio was coming to the Xbox Arcade. Unfortunately that rumor was said to be false and many cries rang out worldwide. "Oh well" I said, "I can just play it on my Dreamcast!" Well, school ended this week and I did just that.

Replaying the game now, ten years after it was released, it suddenly becomes obvious to me: this is the greatest game ever.

I've been going through life saying that Shining Force II is my favorite game ever but OH HOW BLIND I WAS! Hell, Jet Grind Radio wasn't even in my top three before this week. The times, they are a-changin. Now I'm here to tell you why Ashley, Jim, and Chad are wrong and why Jet Grind Radio is the greatest video game you will ever play.

Cel Shading

Ten years ago this game came out and used some thing called "Cel Shading." You may have heard of it, it's kind of a big deal. Well back then it most certainly was NOT a big deal, as Jet Grind Radio is known to be one of the first games ever to use this technology (if not THE first). This gives the game a sense of personality that games today can only hope of mimicking. Playing Jet Grind Radio isn't like going back and playing the first Half-Life where you notice how much it has aged since its release. Jet Grind Radio looked great back then and it looks great today.

Color and vibrancy are what I love most about the art style. I'm red-green colorblind, so I have a lot of trouble with certain games. Jet Grind Radio is NOT one of those games. Every part of the game leaps out at you and makes you want to live in a world where these colors are so vibrant.

Whether it be the smoke that shoots from your skates as you brake to chase after that Poison Jam member or the tear gas the SWAT team is shooting at you, the game screams personality. The art style is simply beautiful. The levels each have their own uniqueness to them and every character oozes their own personal vibe. Which brings me to...

The Characters

Look at them. JUST LOOK AT THEM! Quite the motley crew, wouldn't you say? By far the most popular are Beat and Gum, the first two characters you start with. Why Tab never had the same popularity, considering you get them at the same time, is beyond me! Maybe people like being able to see their eyes...

Anyway, as you can tell, no two characters are even remotely alike. Each person going into this game is bound to find a character they love and stick with. It is also worth mentioning that each character has their own unique stats. There are three fields: Power (HP), Technique (size of turning circle), and Graffiti (number of cans, points, and difficulty of sprays).

My favorite character, by far, is Combo. He's the huge black guy in the back holding the boombox. If that description wasn't enough, you should know that he skates, sprays, and flips while holding that gigantic box of jams. He's so fresh, Will Smith looks like a chump next to him. LOOK HOW BIG HE IS!

Professor K

Now, if you don't know, "Jet Grind Radio" is an actual radio station in the game, and this man is the DJ. He also serves as the narrator/commentator in the cutscenes in between missions. This man has the craziest personality I have ever seen. His voice and his appearance are something you end up looking forward to in between missions. As if the story isn't crazy enough itself, throwing this man's voice over it ramps it up to INSANE.

According to his description in the instruction manual, he "is known by his super funky afro dreads." Let that seep in. Super. Funky. Afro dreads.

The most important part of dance...is music

I could have made this post with just this section and it would be just as true. Anyone who has played this game can tell you just how AWESOME the soundtrack is. Like others, it was the first dose of Jurassic 5(above) I had ever had, leading me to now love them. I always find these songs stuck in my head, whether or not I was just playing the game. I'm honestly at a loss for words to convey how fantastic these beats are. I'll just leave you with some of my favorites.

And yes, you can just listen to these tunes in-game via the Radio in the Garage (your hub).

Perfect Difficulty

The game took me two days to beat, only spanning MAYBE ten hours, probably around 8. At no point did I ever quit due to difficulty rage. By far the hardest parts of the game are recruiting new members. You can't just convince them, you have to prove your worth. This means you must match their moves or race them to a tag spot. It's admittedly rare to do the latter on your first try since chances are you aren't very acquainted with all the shortcuts and paths you can take. You may lose a few times, but you always feel that victory is within your grasp.

The trick matching game is a lot easier. That isn't to say it isn't fun though. The lines that your "rival" demonstrates are usually pretty gnarly and prove useful in the game's missions.

The controls themselves are very simple as well. This isn't your Tony Hawk game where each trick has its own set of buttons to input. Tricks are done by simply pressing R while you jump, provided you have enough speed to do so. Other than that you skate around pressing L to start spraying, which is where the real fun begins. The graffiti mechanics are the heart of the controls and they are superb. Essentially just quicktime events, they have you swinging the analog stick in a certain directions (half circles or full circles) to mimic the on-screen avatar. It works surprisingly well and helps bring you into this colorful and vibrant world.

The Final Groove

"The Final Groove" is the name of the last level in the game. This level is so amazingly awesome, it gets its own section. The story itself is insane, involving demon-summoning records and mysterious rhinos, and it all culminates on this final level. There's not too much I can say, but I will sum the level up with these words (spoilers I guess?)

Evil DJ, rooftop, fire-breathing-gold-mecha-rhino, record-spinning floor (that is, the floor is a giant spinning record), and GRAFFITI.

Who knew that all the world's problems (including city bombings) could be solved with graffiti?

Custom Graffiti
Alright, I've saved this section for last. The graffiti editor isn't very advanced, you can add some text (7 letters) and give it cool effects and/or use the spraypaint tool and make your own shoddy-looking sprays. There are three sizes: Small, Large, and Extra Large. Without further ado, I bring you the Destructoid Graffiti:

(excuse the poor quality, it's a picture of my TV. Also excuse any color confusion as I mentioned before, I am colorblind!)

Here's the small graffiti. Mr. Destructoid's beautiful face all over Tokyo-to!

And now the large one. Modeled after the Destructoid.video logo, obviously! Very slick looking, if I do say so myself!

And finally, the cream of the crop. THE EPIC BROFIST!

So there you have it, why Jet Grind Radio is the greatest game ever created. Hyperbole? Maybe so, but I'll be damned if it isn't my absolute favorite. The personality and uniqueness that this one game encompasses is unsurpassed in my mind. This game is the complete package.

I didn't even get into things like using the INTERNET with the game to upload and share sprays, or the specifics of the ludicrous plot that makes you scream "WTF, JAPAN?!" The game also allows you to collect dozens of pre-rendered sprays, appealing to the collectivist in all of us. I also didn't get into its problems, like the wonky-at-times camera or the odd/inconvenient placement of spray cans.

SEGA delivered the ultimate experience when it made Jet Grind Radio, and you really should get around to playing it. I do hope that one day it finds its way onto the current gen consoles if only to appeal to those who never got to play this gem of a game. It seems to be more of a "cult" classic because of its exclusivity on the Dreamcast, and it's quite a shame.

I hope you've enjoyed this, and thank you if you read the whole thing! I should get around to playing that sequel some day...

This game makes my eyes shine like diamonds.
I never actually owned a copy, but thanks to this game I had quite a few "what are you still doing in my basement?" moments with my friend that did.
I love how the brofist actually looks like its coming out of his arm. well done sir.
TRUTH!

Tiny tiny thing J want to say is that JGR/JSR was not the first cel shaded game. There were a few 2D Genesis titles that used it.

But let's ignore them because Jet Set Radio.
F'Yeah. I was just talking about the Dreamcast with some customers today, and the main reason I still love the Dreamcast so much is Jet Grind Radio.
Definitely one of my favorite games as well! I'd say that says something since I don't ever have time for them any more . . . T_T . . . hahaha! With that said, I totally agree with you about the colors. In terms of aging and all, it has aged tremendously due to its art style and vibrant range of colors that just naturally appeals to the eyes. The characters are most definitely a crazy bunch, but I found myself using Yoyo the most, as he had highest graffiti rating for scores.

The music is totally what made the game for me, as it was so incredibly catchy and upbeat. You're not topping good old Hideki Naganuma at all! You don't have Let Mom Sleep or Sweet Soul Brother, which I find to be shameful! =P Nor my favorite song of the game, Bout the City!!! =P

When you say it took you two days to "beat," do you mean just the game? Or did you JET everything? If you did JET everything, I'm quite impressed, since some of those levels are a fucking bitch to get that rating, but playing as your rivals and all is pretty entertaining. The last level was indeed pretty sweet and all, especially with Grace & Glory playing. Damn! The music just fit the mood for like every level!
@manasteel88 I know! Combo is meant to brofist.

@Xzyliac Oh yeah? Never realized it had been done on the 2D side of things, but yeah let's just ignore those buggers :P

@Funktastic I'm sorry I left out your favorites! Humming the Baseline and Everybody Jump around are always in my head so I threw them up there. I also didn't want to flood the blog with large YT vids (though I totally should have!)

And no I didn't JET everything, those get tough! I did race my crew a few times to the tag though, since that is really one of my favorite parts of the game. One day I'll JET everything, hopefully :x

@all Thanks for reading! Glad to see all the JGR love <3
Jet Set Radio Future was one of my favorite original xbox games. The cast of characters from this one looks very familiar from when I played JSRF. Is this a better game than JSRF, or is it very similar? I might have to try to track down a copy.
I looking for a song from the game Jet grind radio.
I remember a little from the song it went like this: You suck radio you always radio, there's is one more part i remember: ahh ouu check it now that your feeling real tipsy. That is all i remember
extreme brite white
Jet Grind Radio is definitely up there on my list of favorite games. It's so unique and brilliant. There's honestly no other game like it. Dammit, Now you've so got me in the mood to play it.
@knutaf Can't say I've played the sequel, so I'm not sure. I'm sure they're similar enough that if possible, you should track this down.

@samuelward woah, personalized advertising, that's a step up!
@KNUTAF
The story is pretty much the same in both games, the only difference is that Jet Set Radio Future is much more "open world" where you can go from area to area, and you don't just pick and choose. I very much liked that aspect of the sequel, but I found some of the levels to be too convoluted and obscure for my liking. Just like getting around the Sewers the the High Residential District were a pain in the ass in my opinion, and I was not a fan of the map at all. With that said, I like how after you get all the Graffiti Souls in each level, you unlock races, tags, or flag capturing to Jet and all. The last boss was also gay, just in regards the way to get to him. The simpler way of spraying graffiti still has be on the fence. Regardless, both are kickass games and all, but I will side with liking the original better, but the Xbox one is still a VERY solid title.
@knutaf
JSRF was a great game and all, but there were too many little quirks and changes I didn't like about it.

Most specifically, the tagging was simplified. In JGR, you actually had to strategically plan out where you would tag first, because you didn't want to be stuck tagging an XL spot when the cops have already started sending attack copters your way. In JSRF, you didn't have to stop to take an spots, so you could do it anyway you liked. No big deal.

I also much preferred the color palette and character design of JGR. It was much brighter & more colorful than JSRF's darker, grittier look, and I just didn't like how they chanced the look of characters like Mew (Rhyth), Slate (Soda) and Noise Tank.

However, JSRF did still do a lot of things right and was a great game regardless. It's the reason I bought an Xbox and I don't regret that decision for a second.
Great, great article - I remember this was released in the golden age of file-sharing, so I was able to dive onto Napster and download the soundtrack, bit-by-bit.

Best Tracks? A Hideki Naganuma one-two combo of Sweet Soul Brother and Rock It.

They're still on my computer after the best part of a decade, and thanks to you P-Dude - I'm listening to them right now :D
Sweet Soul Brother and those two tracks from "America" were my favs. I still need to play JSRF, now that I have an Xbox of some sort to play it. Real dissappointed that thet took that one off of the marketplace
The radio station in the game is Jet Set Radio if I recall correctly.

I like Beat, Tab, the guy with the bug-eyes whose name escapes me, and of course, Combo. I don't like that in the sequel they changed Tab's name to "Corn". Who the hell changes their street name to Corn!?

By the by, i haet u. I was all settlin' in with my MVC2 and such and such on the PS3, waving away from Dreamcast...

and now I gotta go dig it out for this game. Damnit.
Cel-Shading...Remember when that was the future of gaming?

Jet Set Radio and XIII were the only ones who got it right and yet nobody bought either of them!
Took me forever to finally unlock all the characters in JSRF. I had all but one when I first got the game. Stupid Love Shockers. Looooove this game.
@Caspulex Technically, yes. In the cutscenes K says "Jet Set Radio," but in the instruction manual it says "Grind" so I went with that to simplify things (WTF MAN YOU SAY JET GRIND AND NOW SET? WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN)

Thank you all so much for the lovely comments and of course for reading!
Its so funny, I rented this game with my bro looong time ago and we hated it end of story mind you I would try it again to see if anything has changed as I do own a Dreamcast. I never get why people jumped on these games, one of the few games I ejoy that people like to give "tuggies" to is Killer 7. Killer Instinct however, is another game that people drool over but it was a weak fighting game IMO.

Just here to be "that guy" lol.

Also, judging by the reasons why this game is so great Afro Samuari will be a legend someday? I actually like that game, music, characters and grooving while you kill people....
I consider this game to be the first time I got laid. Too good!

Also it really hurt playing Madworld and seeing the one boss grind around the fence with his blades. It was a dirty move, Sega. A dirty move.
I played the first one, didn't like it much, but then came back to it later and loved it. Am I the only one that found it pretty difficult? Unfortunately, I never got a chance to play JSRF. But, great article, the Dtoid graffiti is sweet!

ALSO WUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT. WHEN WAS JSRF ON MARKETPLACE AND WHY WAS IT REMOVED?! SOMEONE HELP!
Also, Samuelward's spam has to be the most hilarious I've read in a while.

"You suck radio you always radio, there's is one more part i remember: ahh ouu check it now that your feeling real tipsy"? CLASSIC. XD
Pretty sure I see at least one of these a month now.
Was it ever released on Xbox Originals?
TERRITORY IS A TERRITORY! TERRITORY IS A TERRITORY! TERRITORY IS A TERRITORY!
You forgot one of my favorite songs, brah.

But seriously, this game is so awesome. Definitely one of my favorite games of all time. There's very few Dreamcast games that hold up as well as Jet Grind Radio. I'm playing through Shenmue again, and while it's nostalgic as fuck, It's hard to hear some of the voice acting and use the archaic controls.
@Mortrialus

I own the Sega GT/JSRF bundle and it definitely is backwards compatible with my 360. I was just playing it last week. I got it from a friend who was letting it collect dust!
This was the only game that I played from 2000-2006. It fucking rules. You can take down helicopters with a FUCKING CAN OF SPRAY PAINT!

The Xbox one is aiight, but the OG is where it's at. Perfect game in every way.
It happens. Wikipedia is a lying whore.
so much correct in this blog.
cant wait for the re-release on the XBLA
Agreed. Sucks that the Wii sequel got canned. I bet it was because NoA didn't want a "pro graffiti" game in it's console.
@Holmes WOAH I never knew there was a legit Wii game being planned, I thought that was all just wishful thinking. All they need is the same disclaimer! C'MON SEGA, MAN UP!
Thank you for writing this. More people must be told of the greatness!
@Holmes: was a potential Wii sequel ever confirmed. The only thing I read about it was an IGN article that basically said "wouldn't it be great if there was a JSR game on the Wii?"
@Mortialus and Revariance

You're both right. Mortrialus is right in that it isn't compatible with the 360, BUT ONLY IF you never installed the B/C updates, and Revariance is right that it is compatible ONLY IF you DID install the B/C updates.
Godammit, I was gonna make this C-Blog.
Aw yeah, Jet Grind Radio is amazing. I never actually played it, didn't own a dreamcast, but I discovered a couple years back by the music. Yeah, the music has enough clout on its own to be discoverable. Then I found out about the game, and wow.. it just seemed all so smooth, so intuitive. I really want to play it now, I hope it gets a rerelease. To me, the Wii seems like a good fit, but I mean it could go anywhere.
Oh man, I loved this game. Too bad the sequel was very meh. Great article! :D
