Oh shit, I wrote an intro blog, didn’t I? Which I then followed up by writing absolutely nothing. Well, I was going to write some blogs, but then I got addicted to Pokémon X. Then I got back into World of Warcraft again, and well, you know how that game is. There hasn’t been much time for blogging. But that’s going to change now though!
Yes, Blizzcon is coming up this weekend! Now, I know Blizzard isn’t the most popular company around here, but I still find World of Warcraft a very enjoyable game. Honestly, I’m more excited for this year’s Blizzcon than I’ve been for any gaming event in recent years. I’ve even bought the overpriced “Virtual Ticket” to the stream just to see what’s next for Warcraft, live… though I later learned that part would be streamed for free anyway, so yeah, waste of £25. At least I get the Murloc pet.
Anyway, WoW’s next expansion is widely expected to be revealed at Blizzcon. You what that means, right?
Ahem. Let’s look at the most popular theories, shall we?
First off, we have "The Dark Below"
Ozumat, Fiend of the Dark Below
In August, MMO-Champion reported that Blizzard had trademarked “The Dark Below”, and thus the first rumors of the new WoW expansion started. The name “Dark Below” is referenced once in WoW, in the title of Ozumat, “fiend of the Dark Below”, a Kraken-like boss creature. Ozumat was controlled by the Naga, leading people to believe that they and their Queen Azshara would be the antagonists in this expansion. Alternatively the expansion could deal with Faceless, the servants of the Lovecraftian Old Gods.
Or it could be the true name of Titan, Blizzard's next-gen MMO. All I know is that I find the name intriguing.
Second theory: "Warlords of Draenor"
Map of Draenor before the Orcs exploded it.
More recently, MMO-Champion once again reported a Blizzard trademark, and this time it was for “Warlords of Draenor”. Warcraft lore fans will know that Draenor was the original name of Outland, the home world of the Orcs and Ogres, as well as the adopted home world of the Draenei, who named the place after themselves (those selfish dicks). Draenor was torn apart by reckless Orcish magic and turned into the broken world Outland, which we last visited in WoW’s first expansion, the Burning Crusade.
People seem to think that this expansion will involve a time-travel plot where we go back in time to when Outland was called Draenor, and then we’ll fight some warlords there or something. I’ll admit that I don’t really find that idea too appealing. However, with the Timeless Isle introduced in the recent patch 5.4, the time travel theory might not be entirely unfounded. The Timeless Isle's storyline revolves around the unsolved mysteries of time, perhaps hinting at the next expansion. And it’s not like time travel is anything new to WoW, however basing a full expansion on it takes things to a new level.
Otherwise, “Warlords of Draenor” could take place on a different chunk of Draenor than the current Outland we see in-game. Or it could revamp Outland like “Cataclysm” revamped the Azeroth content. And who could the titular warlords be? Could it be Orcs? Maybe the long lost Alliance heroes Turalyon and Alleria? Or perhaps playable Ogres? Whatever the case, I’ve gone on about Warlords of Draenor for far too long.
Now, let's talk about "Corgis Unleashed"
Wait, what? Well, this trademark filing by “Blizzard” appeared a day after the one for “The Dark Below”. Turns out anyone can register something under Blizzard’s name, meaning both The Dark Below and Warlords of Draenor were probably hoaxes. Sorry!
Still, there's always a chance either one of them were real. We won't really know for sure until Blizzcon.
Or maybe Corgis Unleashed is the real one. That means we’re going to lose Dtoid’s Editor-in-Chief to WoW addiction. Oh no!
Well, those were the known trademarks. What about other rumors?
"The Emerald Dream/Nightmare"
This expansion idea has long been requested by WoW players. The Emerald Dream is, according to Wowpedia, “a vast, ever-changing spirit world, that exists outside the boundaries of the physical world”. Also “The Emerald Dream is basically how the world would have been, if intelligent beings had not altered its surface.” Then the Dream was corrupted by some bad guys and turned into the Emerald Nightmare, which affected the real world (of Warcraft) in some way. I’m not really knowledgeable about this part of the lore. But I do know that some good guys resolved the problems with Dream in one of the books, so there’s not actually much for us to do if we go to the Emerald Dream. Or so I’ve been told.
Anyway, I’m not too keen on an Emerald Dream themed expansion. I think we've seen enough drudic, nature-y stuff in WoW already.
Final theory: Perhaps we'll see the Burning Legion return?
Aw yeah! This is what I’m hoping for. The Burning Legion is an army of demons that’s simply put the big baddies of Warcraft. Lots of players in the WoW forum seem to want them back as the major threat. As for me, I would LOVE to see them take the spotlight again in the next expansion. That’s because with a new demon themed expansion, I expect we’d see the Demon Hunters as a playable class. And Demon Hunters are badass. What’s not to like about shadowy warriors using demonic magic against the demons themselves?
Maybe we’d see Illidan again as well. You might say he died during a boss encounter in The Burning Crusade, but come on; WoW characters have survived worse than being beaten up by a bunch of players. The Black Temple was just a setback!
You are not prepared!
And that’s all I’ve written this time folks. What a bunch of nerdy stuff! But thanks for looking at my crappy words anyway.
What do think will happen next in World of Warcraft? Any hopes for Blizzcon?
