Redesigning the Wiimote
OrangeGoblin | 3:07 AM on 10.03.2007 9 comments

These guys have suggested quite a nifty redesign for the Wiimote, for playing games like Metroid:

Now, being a filthy Brit I haven't yet had the good fortune to play Metroid (damn you Nintendo of Europe) but I would still appreciate this new Wiimote. I'm currently playing Resident Evil 4, which is an absolutely amazing game by the way - I've got a cblog brewing that compares it to, you guessed it, everyone's favourite Bioshock - and having the minus button right up near my thumb would be wonderful for quick weapon switching.

However, I would suggest that rather than placing the buttons above the A button, they be placed below so as not to interfere when using the Wiimote NES style. Of course, then you lose the nice comparison to the wonderful Gamecube controller, but it's a small price to pay. Come on Nintendo, spend over $17 million on these, rather than the Wiimote jackets!

I like it. It's far more natural and convenient of a lay out.

Thumbs up from myself. Don't have a Wii but when browsing on friends on Opera, I find my thumb has to stretch a bit too far for my liking. This would fix it :D

It's a cute idea, but not all that nessisary, and would be a big turn off to the people who love the fact that the Wii-Remote barely has any buttons on it.

This would effectively make the Wii-Romote more like a traditional controller, which would be a backwards move for Nintendo.

With the Wii still selling out like crazy nearly a year after it's release, why would they want to go backwards?

That being said, I'd buy this mod.

@ Tron Knotts

How so? It's not adding buttons, it's just moving them. That's all. In fact, the redesign in the picture looks like it would be more comfortable and user friendly and I have a Wii so I've had extensive hands-on with the original Wiimote. This would be a welcomed changed to me.

By the way, I'd just like to add that a remote control is more like a traditional controller than the Wiimote is. There are plenty more buttons on a remote control than a Wiimote. So even it were just adding two buttons, I still wouldn't see much of a problem.

RE v Bioshock. Nice, I'm debating the merit of an Overlord v Bioshock cblog.

BioShock vs. RE4 ... damn that'll be good. I think that I liked RE4 more, but it was really close.

I liked BioShock more because the story actually made me want to finish it.

Holding the WiiMote in my hand and looking at the picture makes me prefer the original. The "redesign" has the buttons too close to the "A" button. Now, I have a completely average sized thumb, but on that thing my thumb would hit all the buttons at once if I wanted to press the "A" button. The problem would be even worse with MP3, because you have to press the c-pad as well.
