German Blogger, writing the series "The worst thing about censorship is ███████ " (go check it out!) since I like to write about that topic and am invested in it a whole lot. Also writes some other stuff sometimes. Likes to listen to very strange bands and has the ultimate goal in life to taste every soft drink there is at least once.
Pure Gonzo - and while I thank god for Jim Sterling sometimes, I thank god for Hunter S. Thompson every day.
I'm a bastard. Don't trust me. Always keep asking, don let yourself get fed bullshit - not even by me.
I like good games. Yes, that's quite general, but I don't really like confining myself to certain genres. I like interesting approaches, invention and creativity. But I can enjoy a straight-up shooter as much as a "Bastion". It just has to be done well and appeal to me on some level.
Want to know anything else? Just leave a comment under a blog or write a message. Same goes for corrections (please), as English isn't my native language and thus isn't nearly perfect.
Salida dear readers,
my name is Jim aka "OpiumHerz" and as some of you may already guess by that nickname: I am german. With the blog series "The worst thing about censorship is ███████ " I want to simply give you a little insight in videogame censorhsip, which is still pretty much alive and kicking here in Germany (but I won't restrict myself to Germany exklusively). I'll try to post entries at least all two weeks or so. Feel free to comment for suggestions, corrections or critique.
This episode is about: Sniper Elite V2
... yes... once more.
So, if you are reading my blog from the beginning you might remember that Rebellion were pretty much dicks to german players with Sniper Elite V2. We got a censored version (just like with the predecessor) and were not able to activate the uncut version from Germany. This happened without any legal ground. Rebellion did it because they thought it would be cool for some reason. The game got reated 18 nonetheless. But well, whoever expected anything else from a sniper war-shooter had to be quite dense. The DLC where you have to assasinate Hitler was not to be released.
With the somewhat spin-off Sniper Elite Zombie Army they were even more dickish. You couldn't activate it from Germany in it's uncensored version again and once more, all the evil symbols and the x-ray killcam were removed. But this time Rebellion gave an official statement that said that ONLY the nazi symbols got axed. Here in Germany, us uncut players, most of us agree that the lack of nazi symbols is somewhat bearable, when the violence and everything else is completly intact (besides, Sniper Elite V2 didn't contain any problematic symbols anyway). What we don't like on the other had is if you lie to our faces. The censorship also made the german version incompatible to the uncensored one in multiplayer (Dead Space 2, anyone?) which is quite a draw in a game that is coop focused.
But a few days ago shit really hit the fan. Because guess what game was released uncut for consoles? Damn straight, Sniper Elite V2. Apparently someone got struck by lightning and they tried to get an uncensored version rated - and rated it was, by our beloved USK, with an 18+ rating. Just like the censored version. But oh, sad world: still no Kill the Führer DLC, according to 505 Games/Rebellion. That was in April.
Then guess what popped up in the USK database? Sniper Elite V2 (Pegi) for PC. Also Sniper Elite V2: Kill Hitler for PC. Both rated 18+. So... what happened? Well, 505 Games was one of those publishers I told you before. You know, the stupid kind? The ones that censor a game beforehand just to make sure it gets rated definitely. At least those who bought the censored PC version get a patch that makes it uncensored, but fff~ucking hell! I mean, who wants that game NOW? I played it already. And I'm pretty sure I won't play it again a lot, because the lack of replay value. And I guess almost every other player who had interest in that game played it too. You know, back in 2012, when it released.
This is what's wrong here. Don't even try to get the game through uncut, just censor it beforehand and make it impossible for no reason to activate the uncensored version. I got lucky that I had access to the STEAM account of a friend, but I can imagine not anyone was so lucky. Of course you could use VPNs/Proxies to activate that game, but you do this at the risk of getting the game removed from STEAM or even banned. There are no known cases where this happened, but the risk is there. Considering how much money some people put into their accounts I can fully understand those who don't want to take that risk. Too little, too late, 505 Games.
Oh... and of course there is no statement about Zombie Army. Because why should they, right?
