Ok, I understand that games are created to make money, and generally will take advantage of certain things that 'hit' in pop culture. Now, I've been a big fan of Discovery Channels hit show The Dealiest Catch since the first season, and still watch it (every Tuesday at 9pm EST). For anyone who doesn't know what the show is, check the links I'll provide shortly.
So where does the whoring come in you ask? Why bring up the worlds greatest crab fishing reality show? (and only crab fishing reality show)...Because of this bullshit.
The shows charm is the personalities that are on the boats in the fleet. The Hanson brothers (and my boy, and super-crab-boat-captain Sig) on the NorthWestern, the Hilstrand brothers on the Time Bandit, the Harris family on the Cornelia Marie (that has a father-son dynamic with captain Phil Harris and his 2 sons which are deckhands) along with some other quirky personalities under the gun, out to make their bank on the brutal Bearing Sea (that last part might be Mike Rowes words and not originally mine).
How do you translate the people, and the dynamic that goes to each end of the spectrum over the 2 seasons (King and Opelio crab seasons) into a video game? Apparently the folks who thought the game was a good idea don't have a clue, just like me...Look at this fuckity fuck fuck bullshit!
It looks fucking drab, and boring...Kind of like you would think a video game based on a show about the people who fish, the dangers they have go on around them, and the story and ways each fisherman interacts with one another (without, you know, the people, the captains interacting with the deckhands, the asides by each crew member that give you insight into something that is very unscripted)...Sure, it's great they catch crab...But that is very secondary to the show (I know it is about crab fishermen, but it is still an aside to the people). This is why game companies are whores, and I am utterly shocked I haven't seen an Empire Arts label anywhere near the games name....FUCK!
Yeah I watch the show too, and they totally missed the point. Actually it reminds me of every interactive sailing game, and the disappointment I keep revisiting.
