I love emulators for my PC. I don't keep old systems out (aside from my sometimes working NES). So emulation is a beautiful thing...Since I don't play much on the PC in general, I never really bought a solid controller for my PC. But, I didn't fret...When I realized what a pain in the balls it was to play FF II/MGS/Suikoden I and II, along with platformers like Super Mario 64 and LoZ: LttP with a keyboard, I was a happy guy when I saw this...
And I would say before going on...You should never download a rom or ISO if you do not own the original game (disclaimer for me, and Dtoid). The reciever comes with a disc to put a driver in (although there is a newer update available on the Microsoft site), and you are on your way. All you need to do is link up the controller with the reciever (by hitting the IR find button on the controller and reciever, just like you do for the 360)...Set up a controller config, and you're money.
So for anybody like me who is cheap (corded controllers for the 360 go for 30 bucks USED!!!) this is a nice move to make. I can attest to the connection staying solid, and not dropping at all (as it doesn't drop on the 360 either).
I'm sure most of you know of this, but if you're like me and just didn't know, now you do! It's fantastic, and now I am off to the land of
Ivalice to enjoy a game I've loved for over 10 years...with my wireless 360 controller.

$20 bones.
much better for not playing roms.
Of course, you could go the "cheap USB controller actually made for the platform" route, which is what I did. $15 shipped for a Logitech controller wasn't bad when I got it.
