I'd like to take a moment to comment on Brads "Home may not be where the heart is"
article...
First, I'd like to say that while his concearns for the PSN turning into an advertising nightmare when 'Home' releases could be well warrented, the method in which he writes about this is so packed with utter bullshit and fanboyism that I'm actually sad it made the front page...ever.
Big Brad feels that XBL is apparently an advertisers wet dream, and that there is so much clutter due to advertising that navigating through the dashboard is somehow hindered by this. I think
"It’s much unlike the Live service where you have to sort through Shitty RC Fun-Fun Adventure and Kinda like Pacman but Isn’t before you can find N+ or Penny Arcade Adventures." remarks like this are pretty baseless and completely untrue. Well, unless you can only claim a score of 60 or lower for your IQ.
I think Brad might not want to use the word editor when writing stuff like this...At least not on a site that isn't www.officialplaystationonline.com. I think up until the latest firmware update (the one that allows you to talk to people across games, XMB) that allows for functionality that was present elsewhere for 3 or 4 years now we could harldy call the PSN a service. I'm sure the trophies will rock, when they get rolled out...I know I wasn't in love with the idea of achievements, but now I find them to add quite a bit of replayability to games.
I'm sure this comes off as fanboy bullshit as well...But I'm blogging, and not on the staff. And the fact that the article is devoid of any real information and is flinging bullshit in the way of Live for the sake of doing it is kind of below Dtoids
actual editors...
I would suggest that when, in the future, you decide to make a comparison Brad, you do so as a well informed person and not as someone with an obvious axe to grind (I can't say why you have such a dislike for Live, or are completely misinformed). I would suggest maybe asking one of the other on staffers at Dtoid to show you how to operate an Xbox 360...But hey, silly me for thinking you should know what you're talking about if you plan on talking at all...
That is all.
I am sorry you can't see tons of ads on your 360 dashboard. Trust me they are there.
Have the ads gotten worse in the last year? Because I used to live with a guy that had a 360 and they weren't that bad when I was on it.
Ads can be ignored, can't they? I mean, they appear everywhere else in the world, so what's new about this phenomenon?
Ok, I only had a silver account so I was only really on the dashboard long enough to launch whatever game it was I wanted to play. I guess if I had dicked around with the marketplace the ads probably would have been more obtrusive.
Also, when I read the title to this blog I thought you'd be attacking Brad's stance on Home. To find out that you're attacking his opinion on Live is lulzy. He hardly talked about Live in that article.
As for "sorting through shitty games to get to what you want", it's really not that hard at all, and I'd say it's overall simpler to do on the 360 than on the PSN. The only reason the PSN seems so much easier is because there's less stuff on it. I'd much rather scroll through clearly legible names of games than rows of thumbnails with tiny text that aren't always so clear on what they're hawking, especially once the PSN Store gets as big as the XBL Marketplace...
so I don't know exactly why you're complaining...
everything he said is completely true though about XBlive... there's not denying that the flashing adds on the dashboard are anoying ( especially if they are wrong, it says "Out Now" you get to the gamestore, "No No only next week!" ) and I'm glad there's none of that on my PS3, but as brad said, when Home comes, that will all change...
hell, there's even people trying to sell crap through fake dtoid-clogs :-)
A minimize button to collapse everything down except "Play Game" and maybe a mini-music bar (like the pause, play selection bar when its playing a DVD) and a uncollapse/maximize button to go back to full menu(s). That would be cool.
If you have a bone to pick with Brad, why don't you address him directly in an email instead of complaining all over the cblogs?
I'm sure this comes off as fanboy bullshit
this comes off as fanboy bullshit
off as fanboy bullshit
fanboy bullshit
"...remarks like this are pretty baseless and completely untrue. Well, unless you can only claim a score of 60 or lower for your IQ."
Then where the FUCK in this post is your basis for claiming his statement as untrue? You didnt present any evidence, you just go off claiming that he is a fanboy and totally bash him like he really was a fanboy.
Did you even read his post? seriously, does a post about Sony make you fanboy? Then you are just a fanboy of ignorance.
Not hard at all. Now, if you're going to look for something that's over a month old, then you have to scroll through some games. Luckily, they're in alphabetical order, so it's not that huge of a pain. But any new stuff is left in New Releases for a long-time, usually.
At any rate, you really, really, really, really need to learn to appreciate sarcasm and irony. It would help the rest of us recognize that your own IQ is above 60.
And Colette, I'm a swell guy...Just ask Wardrox.
The wording of the post kinda inferred that Live users have to wade through pages of ads before reaching content. I wish I could copy-pasta on my Blackberry opera browser, but that's what could have been taken from that wording. Ads are placed off to the side. Granted, they're big as hell, but unless you're new to the internet it shouldn't be a problem.
Brad's wording made these ads seem like interstitial type ads; visit 1up or IGN for an example. You see an ad, click skip, then see content. Live isn't like that.
I'm no fanboy (I own the big 3, PSP, DS, and a gaming PC) so I deal with all of the UI for the various systems. Live is ok, Steam has pop-ups (annoying), and everyone else's is just a little slow. Still, bagging on Live to help support a point isn't cool. It seems fanboyish, even though I enjoyed the rest of the article.
Its the fact that there are more ways than one to go get content is what bothers me. On PSN store, the menus are in layers where I can sort the content in the way I want.
I dont really bother with Spotlight and New Realeases because I would want to be presented with all content relating to the product in case I missed something the last time and the only way to do that is to go to the game store.
I guess it depends on how people like their content to be presented to them. I would really like for them to separate XBLA games, retail games and unreleased games so much. Thats why I like how PSN store gives you the option to sort everything by categories.
If it really took more than 30 seconds to reach a version of Penny Arcade I'd be shocked as shit.
@THISYEARSPINK: Opinion stuff, editorials, whatever the piece you're writing, as long as it isn't fiction should still have the facts straight. Even if I have a different point of view, if I make ridiculous statements and present them as fact I should be called on it.
Like I said, I exaggerated my rebuttal a bit, but in the end my point was that regardless of what you favor, you should still keep it in perspective and know what you're talking about. His rant on how Live is the cluttered space in which it is difficult to navigate, and the analogy used were a bit off the wall. If I hadn't known better I would have thought I needed some kind of pop-up blocker installed on my 360 according to the write up.
Protip: Go to games store>go to more...>go to games i've played
DLC for all games you have played will be displayed for you.
Best thing my friend ever showed me. I am guessing you were unaware as you claimed to have trouble finding Halo3 DLC. I'm also pretty sure most people were unaware of this. It really should be the first item of note in the games store, not hidden in a second tier menu.
Thanks. Im aware of that and thats one more way to get around the cluttered (IMO) marketplace so it irks me. I really want a way to customize my menus on the 360.
I speak exclusively of the marketplace and how retail games do not have their own section but are grouped with "All Games" yet XBLA games and XBOriginals have their own sections.
As what with brad said, all these layers to get to stuff are taken up with ads that could have all the links I need instead of having to click "More...". I speak from a design standpoint that something couldve that couldve done better. I do sometimes get lucky that the thing I want is on the ad but since its random I feel that it couldve been done better.
