About Me
So this is my blog. I collect religious art, taxidermy things and play video games old and new. I've been playing video games for over twenty years and for better or worse have begun to develop perspective on them. Heaven help me. I, with the full support of the Shadow Council, have taken it up myself to hand out decoder rings to all new members here on the C-blogs. I also like handing out little bonus gifts as well depending on what's in the trunk of my car on any given day. I do this because I have things growing inside me. Dark, twisted things that need love. So let me love you.

Forever.

Oh snap. I Tumbl(r). Oh snap. I Tweet.

This is a past banner of mine that was made by fellow Dtoider and sexting partner Char Aznable. I have tattooed this on my heart. My apologies for it being cut off but I don't know how to make it smaller and screaming at the screen hasn't worked yet.

This is a picture Science Jesus and kind-voiced personal savior Beyamor drew while thinking about me. It's my old avatar but it still rings true in the hearts of men and beasts alike. I bet he wasn't wearing pants when he made it. A man can dream, right?

Here are some pictures of things I like. I hope you like them too.

Music that makes me happy - I'll cover you

Cover songs are a strange beast. Both adored and reviled with equal fervor, cover songs wield the double-edged sword of potential. You average local rock band that plays at your average local bar swears by them. I personally have seen lines snaking out the door and around the building for a Sublime cover band. If that isn't a testament to the power of the cover song, I don't know what is. However, I kinda hate most covers. Bands tend to just play the song and do little to make it their own. It's a best a novelty and at worst does a disservice to the original. Example:

Hello. I want to drown you in piss.

I don't need some extreme version of a song that totally departs from the source material, like a trip hop remix of Freebird (someone make this a real thing in my life please). I think that a good cover version is one in which the musician adds his/her own personal touch to the song. So in that spirit, I want to share with you today a few covers of songs that I think are pretty neat. I like them and hope that you will too.

1) Johnny Cash - Hurt

Apparently some band called NiN did this song originally? I don't remember that happening but I do know that when I hear Johnny Cash sing this song, I feel it in my heart that it's his. The sadness, pain, and experience in his voice makes the lyrics come to life. The song becomes more than just lyrics set to music, it becomes one man's journey through love, sadness, and regret. Couple that with the video of Johnny Cash sitting in an empty house filled with mementos and memories of his life and you realize that this isn't him just covering a song. This is Johnny Cash pouring his fucking guts out the only way he knows how and we are all lucky bastards to bear witness to it. So yeah, he owns this song forever.

2) Crispin Glover - Ben

Crispin Hellion Glover is a fun guy. Most people know him for being George Mcfly and almost kicking David Letterman in the face but he also is a prolific author and has put out a few albums. In 2003, he starred in a movie called Willard. It's a good movie worth checking out but my favorite thing about Willard is that he covered the classic Michael Jackson song "Ben" on the soundtrack. His creepy, love-you-with-a-knife voice makes my love of this version rival my love of the original. Plus, drill instructor and tough old bastard extraordinaire R. Lee Ermey is in both the movie and the video. Double plus good!

3) Nick Cave - Avalanche

Nick Cave is the scorpion skittering around the desert of my heart. Bluesy, ballsy and fucking badass is about the best way to summarize his music. Then he went and covered my favorite Leonard Cohen song. This match is as close to perfect as one can get without bringing in religious symbolism. With this version, Nick Cave shows that he respects the source material while at the same time pouring his soul into the performance.

4) Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb

So, many moons ago I used to love Pink Floyd. That love involved black light posters, suspicious glass sculptures, and more than a few bottles of Visine. However, cut to my adult life and I now find Pink Floyd....lacking. Now that's not to say they are bad, they just aren't my thing anymore. You still love them? Badass. Piper at the Gates of Dawn your jam? Rock out. Now, all the being said, if you are a fan of Pink Floyd currently, chances are you will hate this cover. It is about as extreme as you can get in terms of differentiating from the source material. Personally, I think this cover is brilliant.

5) William Shatner - Common People

Over the past few years, William Shatner has reached Bea Arthur levels of pop culture love from the masses. So it's no surprise that when he decides to cover Pulp's smash hit/youth anthem “Common People”, it goes over like a bottle of Boone's Farm at an after prom party. Shatner's spoken word style singing and rhythmic, deranged cadence makes this cover an amazing thing to behold. The fact that the video for it is from the Star Trek cartoon only adds to the joy.

So those are some covers I love. Now I leave you with this picture:

Have a pleasant day.

FUK YEAR for Shatner!

Have you listened to his old albums? He's so epic ... and full of himself it's great.

Great post.

Its as you said, its really about making the song your own and not every band does or seems to understand that.

You listed Johnny Cash and he's like the best case you can make for this. He could take anyone's song, apply his old, weathered voice to it and it sounded like that song was all his own.

Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage", U2's "One," NIN's "Hurt" - it didn't really matter who he covered, he bested them all with his own version of their songs because he approached the songs on his terms. Only time it didn't really work was when it was Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" and probably because Tom Petty was on the track with him. Petty actually brought it down because he can't sing on that low level Cash could.

But you could put Willie Nelson with Cash and anything would still be great, probably because they were much more of the same mindshare.

Fapped.
Cool post btw, I do love a good remix, but I think that Electronica bands do remixes the best, taking a song and slicing every beat and sample to there own personal style, adding in effects and filters, messing up the vocals and putting synths everywhere; a la The Bloody Beetroots and Justice.
That Shatner song was actually immense aswell :D

Willard did a cover? That sends a shiver up my spine and out of fear. My secret cover passion is harder covers of pop songs. Since U Been Gone, for example. Gotta be feeling the screamo though.

Johnny Cash. Hurt.

It's just so f'ing good.

Plus, that last image made me do that out loud laughing. Great read.

Yup, that remake of "Ben" is creepy!

William Shatner can remake anything though! :)

I must say that I think the vast majority of Canadians were completely appalled at the singing of our National Anthem during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. Some songs should NEVER be completely altered and changed - National Athems being one. People like to sing along - when they can't... it's just sad.

Johnny Cash's version of 'Hurt' is just great. You can hear the pain and weariness in his voice, and that just makes the song better.

I don't know what it was, but I found the 'Ben' remake strangely soothing...-shrugs-...go figure, I'm just weird :/

Here's my own little contribution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vV3XQcCyyPc

Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies...if you like punk injected into more mellow songs...you MAY enjoy this. My favourite of their covers is 'Rocket Man'

@Kraid: I have. Sometimes I scream out Mr. Tambourine man just for funsies in the middle of restaurants.

@The Silent Protagonist: What kills me is how Cash took a fucking Soundgarden song and made it his. I mean, Chris Cornell's vocals are epic and so distinct but the Johnny Cash comes along and is all <boosh> this is my song now and it fucking worked. Just amazing. Good point with Petty and Cash. So similar but Cash still owns it (with due respect to Full Moon Madness).

@SM4RT1N0: I think that Electronica as a genre is pretty awesome. The fact that DJ's can create their own sounds from amalgams of other genres and mediums even is pretty damn neat to me. The fact that DJ's can break a song down into individual parts and rebuild it into something new yet familiar is badass. However, for my ears, I prefer the bands but I'm always up for new ways to listen to old songs.

@Beyamor: I downloaded a compilation of metal covers. A doom metal version of "Losing My Religion" is a beautiful thing indeed.

@Anjo: A neat interpretation of the Dante's Inferno theme song:)

@HiddenAHB: Love U2(at least the earlier stuff) but to me their covers sound just like they are singing another song. Not a bad thing but not really the first band that comes to mind for me when I think of covers. Joshua Tree, though, still a pinnacle white dude album for me.

@zombielifecoach: Glad I could assist in the lol's.

@Elsa: If you think that's creepy, check out Crispin Glover's cover of "These Boots Are Made for Walking". It's a thing of pure beauty. It has been my observation that people have a bad habit of singing national anthems to countries they aren't citizens of. The result is often.....unfortunate.

@Sidother: You aren't weird, you just recognize the soothing sounds of insanity. Nothing wrong with that:) Funny you mention Me First & the Gimmie Gimmies. I've seen them a couple of times over the years and I gotta say they are a tight group who nail just about ever song they cover.

@mourning orange: Thanks for the contribution! The singer's vocals are damn near spot on for Freddie's.

I frigging love covers, and I love you for making this! Personal favorites of mine include Foo Fighters covering Baker Street in their early years (Performing the sax solos on guitar is a really nice touch), and The Unseen's cover of Paint It, Black (Who thought that song would sound so good with a Street Punk touch?). There's plenty more, but I'd spend all day listing 'em.

Dammit, a bit late on this, but I just thought of another brilliant cover, and I think you'll find it fits the "made it their own" theme very well.

John Vanderslice is awesome and covers Radiohead's Karma Police
