Gamecube Memory Card Woes

A few days back, I was playing Resident Evil (REmake) on my Wii with my official Nintendo GCN 1019-block memory card , and when I loaded a save, the game told me the save was corrupted and that it had to be deleted. I thought "WTF, ok." I went to the Wii Menu where it told me the card was corrupted, at which point I was quite pissed. I unplugged the card for a bit, reinserted it, and Wii Menu detected my card just fine. I went back to REmake, tried loading a save again, same corrupted BS. I then try another game, Beyond Good & Evil, and it says it's corrupted there. In the Wii Menu, the card's finally kaput--corrupted, so I reformat.

I googled to see if anyone else had a 1019 card problem, and I was shocked to see how many other people had corrupted 1019 cards. Most people believed the culprit to be the Wii's Standby Connection, which, when switched on, heats up the Wii considerably. It's possible that the hear may have corrupted our 1019 cards. Other people claimed that Wii's just generally don't take 1019 cards very well. Nevertheless, my memory card's been in my Wii with Standby on for long periods of time and I never had a problem until now. I've had the card since I bought my Gamecube back in July of 2004, and I’ve had a Wii since Launch Day on November 19th, 2006.

After reformatting, my newly-created Beyond Good & Evil save worked just fine. After I finished the game, I put in REmake again. Played it for an hour or so. I saved. Okay. I then attempt to load the game, and it's freaking corrupt again! In the Wii Menu though, the card is detected and both Beyond & REmake saves are on there just fine. Ugh, lots of BS. I sought help on the Gamecube Message Board at GameFAQs, to which people said I ought to just buy a Memory Card 251, which I just did (Amazon has new ones for $20, kinda steep). What worries me is how, in another topic on the Gamecube Message Board, the topic creator had the 1019-card problem, but when he purchased a new 251 card, the Wii Menu told him that it was corrupt and couldn’t be formatted…I hope that won’t happen to me. I will make sure not to copy anything from the 1019 card to my 251 card when I get it…

I think what upsets me more than anything is how Nintendo never released an official statement regarding this problem, considering so many people have experienced it. I was only really angry about losing my F-Zero GX, Beyond Good & Evil, and Four Swords Adventures saves, considering most of my other saves were games I already completed, but it’s still not cool. So a warning to all 1019-block card owners: Either DON’T use your 1019 card in your Wii, or BACK UP your game saves to another card, or TURN OFF the Wii’s Standby Connection and avoid leaving your memory card in there for long periods of time.
And if anybody’s interested, some saves that I lost (off the top of my head):

- Beyond Good & Evil (I was more than halfway through the game, but since it’s such a short game it wasn’t a big deal. After restarting I ended up beating it in around 8-9 hours.)
- F-Zero GX (I didn’t get far in story mode but I had a pretty sweet ride)
- Resident Evil Zero (completed)
- Resident Evil (completed)
- Prince of Persia Sands of Time & Warrior Within (completed)
- Ikaruga
- Metroid Prime 1 & 2 (completed)
- Super Smash Bros. Melee (a complete save, but since I have Brawl it doesn’t really matter much…)
- X-Men Legends II (stopped playing after I kept dying at this one part…)
- killer7 (completed save with killer8 mode unlocked)
- Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker (completed save)
- Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures (I was somewhere in the 4th area or something, I can’t remember. Good thing this game is fun enough with 4 people).
- Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes (completed save)

mine works fine... And Amazon was the wrong place to pick up gc cards. I get mine at the local pawn shop for a couple dollars.

I prefer a new card to a used one. And just google "memory card 1019 wii corruption"

Gamecube memory cards where pretty fucking awful.

Either too small or if you wanted somthing bigger there was a higher risk of corruption.

I got a EMS 64M USB memory card back in 2004, if it ever does corrupt I can just reload all the saves back on :)

Never had to do though turned out to be very reliable card, but it was nice having the ability to back up.

I got prompted with the message a couple of time, but every time, I just take it out, put it back in, everything gets back to normal.

It's impossible for the save file to be corrupted, I bet in a case that my wii can't read it anymore, I'll pop it back in my Gamecube and it will work fine.

I'm just stubborn to the fact that if I ever lose my save files containing hundreds of hours, I might have to kill something.

^ thats happened to me before after fiddeling around with some homebrew memory card manager. Said the device could not be read or somthing.
Taking it out and popping it back in and it worked.

Wow, that sucks! I've never had a problem with my Wii and 1019 card, knock on wood. If that thing ever corrupted I'd lose a ton of stuff.

I thought this was going to be about the internal battery wearing out. I was like damn that's fast.

I've never had any problems with mine, but then again I rarely leave mine in standby.

I remember when I lost my 2048 block memory card. So many hours of gaming lost, it hurt so much :(

I know what you're going through.

This is where it's at, my friend:

There was one that came out here with the Gameshark label back then, too. I usually hate everything made by Mad Catz, but everything with the Gameshark logo seems to work fine. I guess they kept the original team when the Gameshark brand was bought by Mad Catz.

It's tragic when a memory card goes corrupt. =`(
Hours and hours of play into a game and then to find a save file erased or corrupt is a brutal defeat.
My PS3 had to be repaired and I lost most of my saved data, pics and videos. In RE:5 I had an S rank in almost every level and had over a ridiculous 120 hours of play.
I shed a few tears, reflected some and told myself all the lost memories are still in me... Right?! Right. That's what I tried to tell myself.
It kinda, sorta made me feel better. Kinda. Sorta.
=`)

Losing save files is tragic. Hope yours turn out alright, try reading it in a Gamecube like Nic suggested if you haven't already.

I keep my Wii in solid-red mode (fully off) most of the time, myself. I've heard about some other people having unusual hardware wear and tear in the Wii's yellow-LED mode - which seems to be a super-shoddy interpretation of "standby" - so unless you're really using your Wii's internet messaging feature (???), doing a full off seems like the safest option.
