I bring to you an exclusive revelation at the meeting where Dead Space Wii was birthed.
EA Exec 1: Okay everyone, the Wii's install base is too big to ignore. We need to make a game for it, so how about we use the Dead Space IP?
EA Exec 2: Yes, I think we must. Now, the Wii library has a severe lack of third-person shooters, and RE4 sold oodles on it. Dead Space is very similar to RE4, so logic tells us we can address this market and help bolster the IP's sales and popularity. Also, we have an old build of Dead Space that ran on the original XBox, so logic tells us they may get an enhanced port of the XBox version if we put enough effort into it, as we said we'll make games of Nintendo quality.
EA Exec 1: ...Resident Evil... ! ... Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles!
EA Exec 2: That's it--we'll make a quick cash-in that has nothing to do with what people liked about the first game! They'll love it!
EA Exec 1: Brilliant!
...yes, I am bitter. And I have every right to be. Graphics be damned, this is nothing but a quick "me-too" cash in that will no doubt attempt to fund Dead Space 2 on PS3/360. And if/when this game does poorly on Wii EA will cry bitter tears that Wii owners don't want hardcore games.
Let me be upfront: This game may very well be decent. But that's not the point--this is the same problem as with Soul Calibur Legends, Castlevania Judgment, and Umbrella Chronicles. All of these games are decent (if not good), but they're not what people want or expect from the IP. You can't blame people for being upset they're getting a spinoff that has little to nothing in common with what made them love the IP in the first place.
This IP properly used on Wii could be an incredible amalgamation of Metroid Prime 3, Resident Evil, even System Shock if done right. There's no reason why they couldn't use the engine code for the original XBox version and optimize it on Wii--it would have addressed a very wanting market on Wii, and it would have cost much less than an HD project. Even if it were a "dumbed-down port' (which it wouldn't be, since they'd be porting from a system weaker than Wii), RE4's sales prove that excellent controls and extra bonuses (not included in RE4 GC) will make up for it. But they chose not to fund and give the Wii a game that could shine, and are making Dead Space Umbrella Chronicles.
This is getting old, people. All third-parties are accomplishing by these lazy attempts is fueling resentment from millions of potential buyers who have gaping holes in the Wii software library.

Anyways... I completely agree with you. If Dead Space Wii would have been released alongside the PS3/360 versions I would have no problem what so ever, but the fact that this game was made as an afterthought pretty much shows that EA is trying to make a cheap cash-in regardless if its a rail-shooter or not.
Coming soon! Mirrors Edge: Two Button Sidescroller!
And don't be ridiculous. The Mirror's Edge cash-in will be called I Say Jump, You Say How High.
the poor guy thought he could just enjoy retirement..
Are you sure? I've seen the specs on all three systems, the Wii isnt much better.
Let's freak out cause they are making a new game instead of doing a port!!! Oh no, Umbrella Chronicles was good. And about this idea of an afterthought, have you thought maybe they want to focus all their time on DS PS3/360 and then at the end of the development, start focusing on the Wii? They said about how much story there was to this franchise and that's why they wanted to do a Wii game. New story = quick cash-in?
It could be bad, or it simply could be good but go ahead and write it off already.
You give Wii owners a mature/non-kiddie title and they complain. You don't give them the mature/non-kiddie title and they complain.
Told Isaac? You know it stars a chick, right?
Its not that they focused on their other console projects first. EA released the original Dead Space, complained that it and Mirrors Edge didnt meet their sales expectations, and now suddenly decide they're making a game for the cash-cow that is the Wii. Its all the tell-tale signs of a quick cash-in afterthought project.
Also @Novakaine
I looked up the Wii specs, they are a little superior to the origina Xbox (but not by very much). Though I do stand corrected.
Also, @SephirothX
I realize the Wii isn't much more powerful than the original Xbox, but graphically, in my opinion, the GameCube absolutely destroyed everything last generation. If they could update the graphics on the old Xbox version of Dead Space, it'd be amazing on the Wii. We all know it's not going to happen now, but it would be amazing nonetheless.
Most games are into development many months before you hear about it let alone see it. Do you reall thing they have only been working on this Wii title for two months? Do you honestly think this game hasn't been in the works for awhile?
A month ago we saw a trailer for Section 8 and that was the first time we've seen it. I bet that game has been in the works for some time. And that might be PC and HD but what about Conduit? The first time we saw it wasn't after a month or two or development. Especially when the game comes out THIS YEAR.
How many games have been made and released in under a year?
To assume this game was only created cause of "poor sales of Dead Space and Mirror's Edge" is a little much but you go on thinking that if you want.
Well I'd like to hear your opinion on it, since you're apparently the only person on DToid who's right. I think if this game was in their minds before or when the original title was released, we probably would have heard about it by now to generate more hype and satisfy any Wii fans who might have felt left out in the cold when the original game didnt jump to Wii.
But go on thinking what you will, I'm sure you and Holmes must make a cute couple.
...we probably would have heard about it by alot sooner...
Remember a little game called BioShock? Well the PS3 version had been rumored and rumored and denied and denied. Even said to not be in development at all. Then about 6 months later, they saidBioShock is coming to PS3 THAT YEAR! And in a year from the 360 release, it was out on the PS3.
Now part of that was MS paying 2K Games, but part of that could be not telling the public so they can generate sales. It is PR and there are certain ways to generate excitement. Generally you don't announce a game when you start working on it.
Wii version is more fun.
this is no way a lazy game though
i can easily see this being the next fanboy friday :D
Whatever. I doubt it's effecting your life in any serious way, and I doubt it's costing EA a lot in terms of cash or resources, so it's not like it's effecting other games they could be or are currently making.
And besides all that, you should at least consider the notion that perhaps EA has actually put in some decent time on this game and it will be fun in it's own way. Sure, it's kind of a rip off when you consider RE: Umbrella Chronicles, but that doesn't mean it can't be a fun game in it's own right.
Wait till we see more, or even better wait till the game is released. Then you can check reviews and maybe even rent it for yourself. And after you've done that, you can come back here if it sucks and rant about how much it sucks.
Now please, let's all play nice and all that good stuff.
Another thing that pisses me off is the fact that it's going to be another damned prequel. The movie we got was a prequel, and it was pointless. We don't need MORE backstory.
If it is, that's going to alienate just about everybody who was initially interested in this game.
My thoughts are as follows. I doubt they will make a rail shooter prior to 3rd person adventure. If they want people to buy umbrella they must first stand on firm ground ala RE4, also as Holmes said, it would alienate a lot of people that were prematurely excited by just hearing 'dead space wii', me being one of them as i only own a wii.
EA must of realized that a lot of attention lately has been geared towards titles like madworld and conduit, and realized they could compete with minimal effort using the xbox build of their respective game. Nothing wrong with that, we get more mature games, they make money, its a win-win situation. The question then is, is EA cash-whoring and lazy? Yes, who isn't these days, i would love to make quick money with the least effort, like put money in a bank...i know its sad.
HOWEVER, if it sucks balls, doubtful since the PS360 version was a success, IT WILL NOT SELL. This is not carnival olympics edition featuring mickey mouse, it is a 'core' gamer title that appeals to a relatively limited number of wii users. They know they have to do a good job. ramble ramble ramble...
