Totilo spouts off; industry STILL doesn't comprehend Wii
Novakaine | 3:38 PM on 02.09.2009 10 comments

So Stephen Totilo just put up a blog post where he touched on a few discussions on the Wii that he had with developers during Comic-Con last week, and big surprise, Western developers still have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to the industry leader. Todd Howard of Bethesda compared it to the Teddy Ruxpin; and Totilo reports when bringing up The Conduit (which Totilo says has "hardcore things, like bump-mapping"...) developers say they're befuddled at a hardcore aberration on a casual system.

It's incredibly depressing that Westerners still have such an amazingly shallow and ignorant view of the system. "It has no graffix!" "it has no hardcore gamez!" "third-partiez can't compete wit Nintendo!" "Nintendo needs to show third-partiez the way 1st!"

Seriously, games industry. Seriously.

But it is true, the titles that sell the most are casual titles like Wii Fit or Wii Music, so yeah "hardcore games" are "aberations" because they won't sell well at all compared to crummy, but heavily marketed, games.

Look at something like Dead Rising, its was incredibly dumbed down to appeal to the Wii's wider audience.

That right there is all the example you need on how little companies understand about it.

Personally, I'm hoping 2009 helps change preconceived notions about the system, and more importantly, the theory behind the system: low Horse Power, but high quality, unique and outside-of-the-box experiences.

Since every Wii post needs one, here's a list of anticipated games:

Muramasa (from Vanillaware)
The Conduit
Mad World
Wii Sports Resort + Motion Plus (ya really)
Red Steel 2 (I believe in a sequel)
Deadly Creatures (Its a wildcard, I have high expectations)
Monster Hunter (I'm really interested in this one for some reason!)
Punchout!

2009 will be the year that makes or breaks the Wii for the "hardcore" market. If Madworld and the The Conduit make money, then that will be the end of the "the Wii is a toy" remarks.

If they don't make money, that will pretty much be that for new, "hardcore" titles on the Wii.

I really do hate the U.S. when it comes to Wii games. Japan has awesome crap on there right now, and this year does look better for us, but it's taken WAY too long already.

Ya, Westerners are ignorant because in the West nothing is valuable unless it has POWER, and the capability to ENLARGE YOUR TESTICLES. But there is a reason our auto industry is suffering so badly, just not economical. The Wii seems to getting more than enough love from Japanese devs this year, not to mention a FEW western ones. If people still have the kiddie, soccer mom stigma with the Wii they are ignorant sluts. There is a ton of stuff coming. Also, Fallout 3 and Oblivion offer nothing that couldn't be done on the Wii [aside from graphics] so there isn't much meat to this guys opinion.
