Even the most diehard Resident Evil fan would admit that RE5, after four long years of development, was underwhelming.
The game was not bad, by any means; but it was nowhere near as impactful (and some would argue, good) as its predecessor. It did many things right--graphics, audio, an improved melee system, an incredible Mercenaries mode--but it also did many things wrong--lack of any suspense in single player, inability to poke fun at itself, inability to play without a partner in single player, and overall it just was not as impressive as Resident Evil 4.
That said, what's done is done; and what Resident Evil head-honcho Jun Takeuchi says is done is the story for Chris, Jill, Wesker, and the T-Virus. For Resident Evil 6, what I would like to see is a proper conclusion to the storeis of Leon, Jill, Claire, and Las Plagas.
Resident Evil 5 focused even more on the combat than previous Resident Evil titles; in particular, the melee combat. My dream RE6 would further focus on melee combat--because it would take place in the 1700s.
As revealed through the course of Resident Evil 4, Las Plagas is a centuries-old scourge. The ancient cabal "Los Illuminados" used Las Plagas as a tool to further their corrupt "religion" and extend their power. The first Castellan de Salazar, however, saw through the Los Illuminados' insidious front, and took it upon himself to strike a great blow to the cabal, sealing Las Plagas deep underground.
Flash forward to the present. Agent Leon Kennedy is still tracking down the rogue Ada Wong, despite the death of her employer [Wesker]. Leon is eventually joined by Claire Redfield, who has graduated and become a lead scientist for the North American BSAA branch. During their investigation, they find the very last members of Los Illuminados, who lead Leon and Claire to ascertaining the ancient history of Las Plagas.
Here, the game would pull a Raiden: You would take control of the first Castellan of the Salazar family, and your play would effectively unfold the events of Las Plagas' origin in a way Leon's narration could never achieve. The gameplay itself would be a
stark contrast between Leon's antics in the game thus prior; since firearms were a rarity in the 1700s, combat would be melee-oriented, with swords, shields, and crossbows replacing Glocks, combat knives, and Dragunovs.
The game's control scheme and gameplay itself would shift drastically, with L1 hefting Salazar's shield (so as not to be helpless when surrounded by enemies) and R1 readying his weapon at hand.
The ultimate goal of this paradigm shift would be to change combat to a much more intense, cautious, and suspenseful affair. Instead of never fearing combat (like in RE5), you would have to use your environment and brain to survive against superior numbers. The implications and change of pace could be great.
After Salazar's journey midway through the game which explains the origins (and key to destruction) for Las Plagas, we return to Leon and Claire in the modern time. With this newfound knowledge, our heroes set out to eradicate the last members of the Los Illuminados, and finish Salazar the First's mission of sealing away Las Plagas for good.
Although my ideal Resident Evil 6 comes off as amateur, I do think the premise is solid. At the very core, I feel that RE6 needs to conclude the Las Plagas story arc involving Leon and Ada (and throw Claire in there), before Capcom decides to truly revamp the series and start with a clean slate.
I quite liked it. Resident Evil 4 was action-oriented, so I expected 5 to be the same: it was. I didn't mind Shiva, because it was inherently a coop game (just like Left 4 Dead, why would you play by yourself?). Also, all in all, it was packed full of additional content that easily made it one of the best purchases of 2009, value-wise.
I like your idea, but I hope the next RE contains just as much content as 5.
I want the next Resident Evil 6 to contain as much content as Resident Evil 5 did, and I agree that the game works well with a more cooperative focus. Unfortunately, I didn't have anyone to consistently play the game with at the time, and while the single player was enjoyable in its own right, it wasn't nearly as good as its predecessor.
There's a few other niggling complaints, most of which stem from the greater focus on multiplayer over crafting a solid campaign experience.
What I want is, a game that can provide that enjoyable multiplayer experience without sacrificing its fantastic single player campaign. It's a horrible example, but maybe you could do what Doom 3 did, give me a separate campaign to play with a buddy. That would certainly satisfy the itch for even more content, and it would keep someone like me, someone who likes to absorb himself in Resident Evil games alone in his room, satisfied.
I'm just sayin'. It's a damn fine game, but it's certainly not for everyone. Capcom should work on that. Hell, if Lost Planet 2 is any indication, I shouldn't have anything to worry about.
Either way, I'd be more interested in this than just another "Let's kill the natives" RE4/RE5 scenario.
Oh, wait. He's dead.
Shit.
Anyway.
I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to the Resident Evil series. The only one I've played is 4 (Wii Edition), plus a few minutes of 5. I loved 4. Fantastic game. 5? Maybe it's because I wasn't enjoying the co-op (my brother rented it, we played split-screen), or maybe I just couldn't get into the control scheme after being spoiled by the (in my opinion) perfect implementation of motion controls in RE4, but we played for 20 minutes or so and never looked back. I just couldn't get into it.
That being said, your idea sounds awesome. I love that it ties into RE4's story, and the switch in locales would be a really interesting direction to take the series. I can dig it.
- Make it actually scary (like RE Remake scary)
- Single player (ditch co-op but include 2 playable characters)
- Return the game to its survival horror roots
- Wii controls
- Be able to move and shoot (but keep the original controls as an option)
- return of the traveling salesman
- go back to RE4's item combination system
bring back the puzzle-solving
- Return to showing main playable character deaths while in-game
- bring back the mysterious and eerie atmosphere of the old RE games (making good use of lighting is the key)
This is going to be there chance to make some money to develop & bring along a user base to RE:6. Also make up to the those people who finally got turned off. They packing it with gobs of extras. Let's see if they know how to capitalize.
I hope they pull it off (Gold Edition/RE:6) by putting in... Zombies, Tyrants, Dogs through Windows, Giant Beast Bosses, Puzzles, Blue Herbs, Typewriter / Ink Ribbon & of course Cranks! Oh, Creepy deer heads on mansion walls too! :P
Just a real nice RE:Make with the HD Engine Capcom had for RE:5, NO? They gave it to Bionic Commando & Mega Man & Street Fighter.
*Fingers Crossed*
I'm rather curious about the main character in RE6 if this is picked up tough. And how the language will be played out, I assume they won't speak English, or maybe they will, just for the heck of it. Anyway: Good read.
I wanted to be the one to set off that bomb in the facility that would countdown 5 minutes so I could get out of there alive!
As for @Hiltz
Survival Horror back would be nice.
Static Camera angles, please.
Good lighting definitely.
Absolutely NO run and shoot. (HELL NO!!!!)
And finally, I remember RE4 being a great experience, but as a Resident Evil fan, I enjoyed playing through 5 better. RE4 introduced the new controls and style of gameplay flawlessly, but 1) I never liked Leon, 2) Las Plagas? A Cult? It just seemed so "un"-resident evil to me. I was ecstatic that RE5 brought the series back to its roots. The conflict between STARS members and the man who betrayed them, Wesker. <3
1: It's totally Claire's turn to be a main character.
2. Tricell is the new Umbrella.
3. We had T-Virus combined with Las Plagas? What about G-Virus mixed with Las Plagas.
4. Get back to the "scary" RE.
@Tactix : Did you play Outbreak File 2? We could move and shoot, it was well done.
Zero through code veronica were actually scary games, and contained some challenge. I loved 4 and 5 was good, but who was actually scared by those? It was a stop and pop sort of deal. While I can appreciate the idea of the las plagas and all, I really miss actual zombies, just not symbiotic creatures. Besides some occasional occurances and most of zero, you were on your own, just you, scavenging for weapons, ammos or supplies, while in 4 or 5 you can run around with unlimited ammo and saves.......is that survival horror.....not it's not.
And does every game need multiplayer these days? jeesh. I can understand the co-op of games like outbreak or 5, but that doesn't really seem like a selling point too much. It's a lot more intense when you have no one to back you up. And in zero, when you're partner was in trouble, it was usually more serious. And at least they had long time of seperations between rebecca and billy. I just find the premise and story/characters of the originals to be a lot more detailed and intricate, I love them. The remake of the original on the Gamecube was the scariest, most intense games I've played.
I'd love a shift to the style of story (some gameplay aspects) and maybe some of the other characters come back. Barry? billy? rebecca? Claire? Carlos? Perhaps they cover one of the original stories from the novelizations of Resident Evil? That'd be keen.
I recommend that you read the resident evil novels out there by S. D. Perry, they provide you with so much back story and let you know what occured and what the characters were up to in the time gaps between games. And like I said, maybe turning one of those original stories into a game would be a good idea, give die hard fans a nice return to the original story and plights of resident evil that they fell in love with originally.
Also, have a soundtrack just as amazing as zero's or the original remake.
The same gameplay refinements as RE5, but even moreso, and make it single player only, or at least give the option to play by yourself, without an AI partner.
That's all I need.
Las Plagas was the shittiest thing ever put into RE.
What RE needs is to drop the whole action bullshit. RE was about suspense and terror and a feeling of dread and impending doom. Its since been hijacked into a terrible action shitfest that is about as scary as children's programming on PBS.
Bring back:
-Actual suspense
-Ammo deprivation
-Experimental Monsters
-Feeling of being powerless
-NO MORE PLAGAS. Shit is stupid.
Resident Evil 4 style remakes of Resident Evil 2 & 3 please.
Same for me. Like RE4, but scarier and with zombies. They still set up a few scares in RE4 even though the camera wasn't fixed (man in the oven? That first damn regenerator?), and the RE4 combat would be cool against zombies, so it's totally possible.
