Things That Suck is telling the truth. People who take offence to anything here can shoot themselves in their fanboyism.
Halo ODST sucks. It is short, full price, and Copies/Pastes Halo's Multiplayer and calls it a day. Oh forgot, it adds one Multiplayer mode. There I said it. Now to say why FireFight sucks, but first the CE Controller.
I got ODST on release day like 90% of the current ODST owners did. I bought the Collector's Edition that GameStop had because it came with a controller. The controller looked decent, but I was thinking that it reminded me of the Halo X-Box 360 Edition controller.
Fulgy Console.
Oh, hang on it is. They must have had extra controllers in the warehouse or something. Deciding to put rather ugly decals on it and releasing it at GameStops.
Fugly Controller.
So ya now I have a Ugly ODST Controler with my "RE:5" Red Controller. Oh, to make it worse the battery thing is black not [Puke] Green.
Now back to what you came here for, why ODST's FireFight sucks. So first, I want to play FireFight. It was much hyped, and I want to be there. So I opened the case. One disk says "Campaign", the other "Multiplayer". Simple enough. I plop in the Multiplayer disk to get my Halo Not-3-But-ODST on.
Imagine the disks say "Multiplayer" and "Halo:ODST".
After about 15 mins of wondering "Where the Fuck is FireFight?", I [in an angry fashion] take the disk out and put in the Campaign disk.
"Ah," I though, "FireFight must be one of those new "Multiplayer For One Person" games, like Animal Crossing"
My screen was like this, sans people and fun.
Then I found a major flaw, where the fuck is the lobbies. I want to play with people, why can't I? Looking on the GameFAQs Forums, I found out why. On a system that boasts its Online, ODST sets our Internets back to the 80s. There are no lobbies for FireFight. Why Bungie thinks that an ONLINE multiplayer mode doesn't need lobbies on X-Box Live is beyond me. This here is one of the WORST multiplayer modes ever, for that very reason. How can I have fun, if I can only play against myself? I know what your thinking, "You just invite people from your friends list". Ya, but I have no X-Box Live Friends. On X-Box Live, I play strangers. Hang on, I used to play with strangers.
Alright, so then I was going to play Halo Not-ODST-But-3 Multiplayer. I put in the Multiplayer disk, went to Team Slayer. What do you know? Everyone that was playing, sucked. I guessed they just got back to Halo Mutliplayer after playing games that a good.
I could go on, I really can. I can go and say PC is the real way you play FPS (true story). I could say that the TrueSkill system is a flawed way to say if someone is good. But thats not why I am posting this. If I had to list Things That Suck, Halo ODST is on that list.
Go look at our forums, Norton. We have a thread with a bunch of gamertags of people that have ODST. Give it another go with people that you know will play right with you before condemning it
While the tone is serious, this (and others in the future) should be taken as a way for people to see obvious flaws in games.
Its kind of like "Bashing the Unbashable" type of thing
Seems likely to me that they put Firefight on the campaign disc for two reasons. One, they wanted to keep the new content on one disc, and two, Firefight can be played solo while everything on the multiplayer disc cannot.
You are right that the campaign is short, but it's highly replayable and for the most part lives up to Bungie's high quality. Lots of FPS's are short...I'd rather play a good game for a short while than a bad one for longer.
I know it's popular to point out the flaws in everything these days, but sometimes you gotta look on the brightside, or you'll always be unhappy about something.
TL;DR: Cool story, bro.
Gears 2 managed it.
I do see what you are saying about New on one disk, old on another. But the disks are not labeled "Campaign/FireFight" and "Multiplayer". Two words would have saved me ~5 mins that didn't need to be wasted.
I do not think it being short is a problem. Hell HL2: EP 1/2 and Portal are all short games. But none of them cost $60. Ep1 was $20, and Orange Box was $60 w/ a lot of stuff (X-Box/PS3 $50 on PC). ODST is overpriced as it could have been DLC, or just cheaper.
Like I said before, this is just an alternate look on things. I did by the $100 version, didn't I? I still think that controller is ugly though, but it is something I'm not ashamed of having.
I have hated Halo for some time now, but have been really enjoying Halo: ODST (and more importantly, Firefight). That being said, if I had to play any of the game modes solo or with randoms, this would be the worst gaming purchase I have ever made.
Go get some friends, yo.
Why not give me the choice to do so? What happens when all my friends sell ODST? Are you telling me I have to sift through GAF for people to play with? Same with Brutal Legend's "friend only" online play.
You call it "an online douche protector", I call it "lazy programming".
If you don't like it, get some friends.
I don't even play Halo anymore. I won't be playing ODST. I don't play FPS games anymore precisely because of the rampant douchebag factor, and because of the overwhelming glut of the genre that has descended on the gaming industry at large. But I have one constantly maxed-out friends list made of real people I know and real people I have enjoyed playing, even if I only know their voices, and sometimes only their Gamertags.
You should get people here to play with you. I personally have had a blast playing both Solgrim and RAB in Street Fighter. And don't get me started on Friday Night Fights when GTAIV came out - the Perfect Strangers theme moment is burned into my mind forever.
"Standing Taaaaaaaallll..."
It's a lazy call they made. So come six months or so when everyone I know is bored with the game, I'll play something else with lobbies, or buy a version that has lobbies over another port (Ie Left 4 Dead PC/360): problem solved. I still think it's lazy.
If ODST was on PC, it would have lobbies.
And if my ass had a lever it would serve chocolate yogurt. Why bring up PCs?
I was just comparing it to Left 4 Dead on console/PC. Someone said "deal with it", and I was simply saying "I will, on a PC", which always has better multiplayer options anyways.
I was also faux-commenting on future hopes for less console FPS exclusives, and for more of them to be put on the correct platform: PC.
When PC parts become less expensive (as new console costs rise), and with PC games already cheaper than $60 a pop, you'd be hard pressed not to find reasons to play FPS games on the PC for free DLC as opposed to $10 level packs, larger multiplayer limits (COD:WAW 360's limit kills me), and better connectivity, lobbies/community support.
Oh, so now you're ragging on console only players, eh? Just because I don't like mouse and keyboard controls, and upgrading every month, that makes a console player less than you, huh? And just because I have to pay to get upgrades to my multiplayer games, that makes me stupid, huh?
Just because I don't want to have to pay money to upgrade my system every single time a game comes out that I want to play, doesn't make me any less of a gamer. Shut your whore mouth.
The disk says CAMPAIGN. FireFight is a multiplayer mode. On the front cover, it says "New Multiplayer". What was the new Multiplayer mode? FireFight. If it was issues with disk space (textures/A.I/ect) thats cool. I just added in that IMO it should have been on the other disk.
@ Everyone who says I need more friends.
My friends are PC gamers. For X-Box Live/PSN, I always got random people to team up with. If I wanted to go to various forums and get people to add me, I would go on the Wii with it's Friend Codes. As I have said before, this move is a step backwards.
@ nekobun
I didn't see the controller before hand. Because it was a CE, I would have bought it anyways. :P
This was taken way more serious than I thought it would have. The cynical part of me is laughing it. I do like Halo, and this was in no way a full review. I just don't like it when people yell "11/10" in a game with obvious flaws.
I can use a 360 controller on my PC
I don't have to upgrade every month (that's a misconception I talk about in length in my "why do you hate PC" pieces).
Also, chill. That doesn't make you less of a player, I'm simply saying that console FPS games have their disadvantages.
Guess what? You can't dispute the fact that I get free DLC. You can't dispute that I have higher player counts in comparison to the same games on the 360. You can't dispute that I get lobbies and you don't. Am I better? Not at all. Is the game better, and do I get the best of both world by using a controller? Sure I do.
Just to make sure you understand my stance: I am a console gamer first, and I HATE platform elitists, but I can't sit there and deny the fact that the PC will give me a more fun, and complete FPS experience in most direct cases (Left 4 Dead free PC mod levels? C'mon...), and that I can make a good PC on the cheap.
And yet, you're still positioning yourself as a better player than I, or all my console only brethren. :p
Oh, and nortonantivirus, get the fuck off my computer.
And I quote:
"@ Everyone who says I need more friends.

No, the only step backwards that's present is the one that your inverse logic is taking. If you are looking for people to actually play and form a team with, it's far better to get someone on your side that has the same desire to play in a serious fashion than some willy-nilly random douchepot that's there to get some achievements and dip out. You act as if it's a great pain to add someone to your friend list, especially if you're looking for a teammate or an adversary (friendly, of course), so you don't do it and bitch about it when you have nobody to play with for whatever reason. You can't have it both ways, dude. No getting cake and eating it in the same action - you have to pick one.
@ Magnalon
Dude, if you feel that not having a proper lobby ruins the game for you, then don't play it. From what it sounds like, you hate stepping out of your overclocked ivory tower to come play with the peasants to begin with, so it really shouldn't matter that much to you. You are coming off sounding very much like an elitist, PC-only prick. Usually, you're a lot cooler than that.
@ blehman
Dude, you're giving us console folks a bad name by the way you're acting.
Everybody just shut the fuck up.
Listen, everybody can tell that ODST was a cash-cow cash-in. We saw it coming. This isn't a surprise. So, when we see that it is just that, and all of the cracks in the facade are there in plain view, do yourselves and everyone else a favor and don't bitch about it. We knew that this was nothing more than a desperate attempt to keep Halo relevant, an attempt that has largely failed thanks to lackluster planning and strict adherence to the one-trick-pony-syndrome that not just the Halo franchise, but nearly EVERY FPS DEVELOPER is guilty of (in fact, the only one that can still make the genre feel anything near fresh is Valve). A pony that does the same trick while wearing a flashier saddle than the last time is still a one-trick-pony, no matter what decorations it wears on its back.
If you don't like it, don't play it. If you want to try it and not have to spend $60 to do so, this is why they make rental services. Take advantage of what's there and play smarter by making better, more informed choices about the type of controller candy you choose to chew on. Alliteration for the win, bitches.
baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw
Wow dude, you are really getting worked up about this. Nintendo has gotten some beef with its Friend Codes right? So if FireFight does the same damn thing, just because it's Bungie we let them go? Thats not right.
In Left 4 Dead, people quickly learned how to work as a team with strangers (on PC at least). The same damn thing would work with FireFight. Everything seems to be moving to 4 play co-op. The thing is, every other game that has it, lets you play with anyone, not just your friends. Saying, "if you don't like it, don't play it," is what I am doing. I don't have X-Box Live friends, so I don't play it. Instead I am complaining about it.
Also, Bungie is not a one trick pony. They did make Oni for PS2 <.< long time ago......
But seriously dude, you are way to worked up. If your a Halo fanboy, we have stuff for that. Its called Midol.
Birthday Greetings
