I'll admit it. I was lured into this game for its 'promise' of open world warfare with co-op campaign and a more realistic non infinite spawning enemy positions and no phantom grenades everytime you go prone to heal. Real combat, in an open world.
So it seems a shame to find out upon mass playing of the missions your given a big playground true with set objectives and the likes. It seems as of late with the chief or 'Fuhrer of videogames' being Namco Bandai [a.k.a Scamco] with its DLC which is scandalous, but least its content. its backhanded gamers hate paying for anything, especially content made locked on the disc, but when you spend money on advertising showing your product to be something it isn't well thats misleading.
As gamers we accept you [developers] want the game to sell well, and its the publishers job to make that happen, but Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising has done something which to the market as a whole no one cares about, but the individual consumer is pissed about. The best analogy is the classic internet dating thing, of the profile has a hottie as the main pic which isnt professionally shot, but is most likely a picture of thier best friend and you on good faith go to meet up and end up with a outright minger, or at least a but-her-face.
Codemasters have simply made themselves a moderate army of gamers that are unhappy and will forget any future products from them. While I have no intention of an all out review of Dragon Rising, it suffers from faults and errors which by todays standards set in the gaming industry by thier peers, are conciderered 'schoolboy errors', clones of the same three to five faces, mediocre multiplayer servers, AI issues which coulda-shoulda-woulda been fixed with testers just having some days playing through the game. While its sadly true errors outway the good operation flashpoint is full of little details that can make you smile, but its destroyed by false promises and squad AI that make progression like having to 'play military' with special needs kids...
Codemasters just need to know we aren't angry; just severly disappointed in them.
The "one sitting" line really killed it. If he didn't add in that simple phrase, they could have said "well technically, it COULD take you 9 and a half hours, but you have to stay on mission".
This game kind of had my attention, so are you always on a mission? There is no open world sandbox type play? Because if not that is a fucking oversight, why bother making that huge island if you are always forced to stay in a certain area?
What a stupid design decision. I was really under the impression that the entire game was going to be more freeform, allowing you to take things on as you felt were appropriate.
It would actually be pretty cool to have a realistic, tactical military game that plays like Crackdown. Not with superpowers or whatever, but in that you sort of drop down at a base and decide how you want to go about completing various objectives around the battlefield.
Personally I don't care about the Singleplayer campaign with this game, or playing with AI Squadmates, all I wanted from Operation Flashpoint DR was its mission editor so my friends and I can play endless coop missions. And that's what we are doing.. The fact that I have this huge open world to create a mission anywhere, with any asset that is in the game has been quite satisfying. Granted it is no ArmA or ArmA2 which are FAR more realistic than OFP:DR, but this game does have a bit better performance than the other 2 so all of my friends can play it.
Yes the game has some major AI issues, and the lack of a dedicated server is very unfortunate, but we make due. My friends have rather fast internet connections which offer us a stable experience in the game. And so far we have had endlessly different experiences playing the custom coop missions that we are making for this game. With the release of the patch that's in the works now, hopefully a lot of the issues that are holding this game back (that should have been fixed in the first place) will be solved for the most part.
I think the biggest problem is that their statements of one huge open world were taken by those who have not played ofp or arma and thought of it as a 'crackdown' / 'gta' type world where you could go anywhere and fight in a conflict at any time. Unfortunately that's not the case, the world is open and free to roam.. but you will run into conflict only where the developer of that mission put units.
However, with that being said, if you use the mission editor, you can easily make a mission that does such a thing. The greatest thing about having such an open world environment, and a beautiful mission editor like OFP / ArmA is that you have endless possibilities.
I am currently working on a mission that takes my friends and I from one side of the island to the other.. and will last approximately 3-4 hours. We start off coming in on helicopter, land on a coast line.. move inland and fight combatants, and then we get into light armored vehicles and push with a small armor column which then gets ambushed. We then move on foot from that location and work our way towards an oil refinery and destroy it. Hunt down sam sights so our birds in the air can take out armor that's in our way. After which we split up into two groups of two, rendezvous with some ammunition drops that I had set up on a mountain side.. get our sniper equipment and then hunt down two generals on the island. Afterwords we have to get to the extraction and be airlifted out of the island without dieing.
None of this was part of the story of the game, none of this was pre-configured for me. This is something I am building in the mission editor with simple clicks of the mouse button. Its a drag and drop experience with creating any type of mission you want, and approaching the mission in any way you want. We can completely avoid the armor column if we want, we can go straight to the oil refinery and destroy it. That's the beauty of this game, is that you CAN do whatever you want, it all depends on the size and scope of the mission.
Is the experience much better in ArmA / ArmA 2, in some cases yes it is. But as I said, my friends have performance issues with those games, so this is our fallback, and its a satisfying one. I just hope the patch they are working on currently will fix alot of issues with the game.
Dude, is there anyway you could hook me up with that mission you're making? It sounds fuckin awesome. I'm having tons of fun with this game, so it's nice to hear of someone else that enjoys it...
@Mourning Orange - I'm not sure when I'll be done with the mission, it might be a month or so because I'm busy as hell with school and theres a lot of work going into the mission itself. But I will make a blog post once it is completed.

about me
Gaming Since: 1988 [Age 5]
First game Ever Played: Duck Hunt
First Game Completed: Duck Tales [NES]
Favorite Game of All Time: Panzer Dragoon Saga
Why? - Essentially flawless, epic storyline, had tech in-game that some games even today still fail to meet in some situations, and for its time had some of the highest detail FMV's going even topping FF7.
Favorite Franchise: Hitman Series
Why? - 47 is Silent but deadly. Unless your trying to mimic or follow a preset path only you have decided to take is any playthough simalar and in some situations AI in some situations is ever repeatedly the same something different is always going on thats different from last time even if your not directly seeing it. Hitman also maintains a sense of realism while maintaining colour unlike the higher level rendered games of brown and grey. I will love the Hitman series until 47 fibre wires me because I know too much >.>
Current five games looking forward to in any order:
Assassins Creed 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Splinter Cell Conviction
Mass Effect 2
Dante's Inferno
