Hello everyone, my name is Dallas and I'm 34 from the Chattanooga area. I've been a gamer for over 30 years now. I have, at one time or another, owned every single console that has come out with the exception of an Atari. I had an Intellivision "because it was cheaper". I've been around Dtoid before, in another form, but for some reason or another it would not allow me back in to my old account so I've made this one which is fine with me because I wanted a fresh start and to narrow down my focus anyway. I'm married, we were a high school couple that went our separate ways and ended up back together. She's now a little disabled thanks to a stroke in 2010. Speaking of that, my "job" is being her caretaker though she can pretty well do most things for herself. Before her stroke, I worked for UPS. I have also written reviews for various websites at one time or another, some of which have disappeared into that great internet void. I am always looking for paying writing gigs that allow me to work from home so if anyone knows of any just point me to the person I need to speak with.

What I'm playing:

Redesigning the 3DS
Nintendo Nerdist | 10:00 AM on 02.04.2012 20 comments

You know it's coming. Probably not this year, but I'd bet my bottom dollar that in 2013 we will see a newly designed 3DS hit the market. Given Nintendo's track record for releasing updated versions of the same hardware and given that they've already had to release an attachment in the form of the Circle Pad Pro which adds additional shoulder buttons and a second analog stick. These two things alone point to a redesign in the works. But, what should that redesign include? I know what I'd like to see and I've listed it here.

Make the 3DS thicker.
Not a lot thicker, no, just enough to accommodate an R2 and L2 button on the shoulders. Pretty simple.

A second analog stick.

It's ugly and adds features that should have been included to start with.

Do not put it beside the face buttons! Put it under them. Increase the size of the 3DS just enough for this addition without making your fingers cramped.

No more sliders!
The sliders to adjust volume and 3D effect work alright but I'd rather see actual buttons with a digital number. Volume could be 0-100 in value while the 3D effect might be 0-10. Having an actual numerical value to associate with your preferred 3D setting would be a lot easier then having to adjust a slider until you "think" it's about where you had it before. I don't know about you folks but I turn my 3D on and off according to what game I'm playing and I hate having to readjust. Perhaps give the 3D effect a memory function that automatically goes back to the last setting it was on when you first press it.

Use Gorilla Glass.
It's a known fact. If you have a 3DS, you have a screen protector on at least the touch screen to keep it from getting scratched up. While this is all fine and good thanks to Hori screen protectors being so easy to install but it's still a pain in the ass because if one little spec gets under there then the whole thing is just ruined. Putting Gorilla Glass, an excellent scratch resistant glass used on iPhones, Android Phones, and other touch screen devices would eliminate the need for screen protectors unless you're the type that likes to really dig into your 3DS screen with that stylus.

Bigger battery.
Increasing the size of the 3DS, as I've mentioned above, should also allow Nintendo to put a little more battery power in there. This would be a nice thing to have, even if it only added an hour or so.

Keep the cradle.
The charging cradle is one of my favorite things about the 3DS. If I'm at home and I'm ready to take a break, I just plop my 3DS in the cradle and it's good to go. It would, of course, be enlarged to fit this newly designed 3DS.

The bottom screen bezel should not touch the top screen!

This isn't my 3DS but I've done the exact same thing with aftermarket 360 feet.

I have little rubber feet on my top screen in order to keep it from resting on the bottom screen's bezel, potentially causing scratches on the upper screen. What kind of design choice was this? Other than a poor one. Fix it by reducing the size of the bezel or putting more space between the halves when the 3DS is closed.

So? What do you think? Would you add anything else on the hardware side to a redesigned 3DS?

I'm with you on the thicker 3DS, thicker glass and big battery life

This is all terrible and would put the 3DS at $500+

No. Just no.

So the proposition for a 3DSXL, a few functional changes such as secondary trigger buttons and the inclusion of another analog stick?

This tear down suggests the entire device would have be redesigned to benefit from the added inputs.

I'm sure a new model will be out before Christmas of this year.

I would add to change the d-pad and face buttons to use silicon pads for the button feedback/clicking whatever you call it. Those weird hard bubble pads on the board for buttons are shit and too hard. They wear out in a permanent way vs replaceable silicon pads.

I would say that a screenprotector is minimally needed for the TOP SCREEN not the bottom, bottom isn't easily damages from my experience and It kinda depends on a person's habit of pressure and if they use their nails or something in certain ways. But the reason the top screen needs it is because of the same reason you are using those 360 feet to keep space between the screens. But with a screen protector and small thin cloth for screens between a closed system will prevent damage just as easily while allowing you to wipe the annoying glossy texture of the system.

That brings me to suggest they use matte finish on whatever next design they might do, glossy is freaking horrible.

The start/select/home buttons need a new design as well.

The 3d slider is fine I think, I think a better and improved 3d screen will allow better field of vision, but maybe slider or digital adjustment is a matter of preference.

I completely agree with everything else you've mentioned. The thickness is a big one for me, cramped hands is daily thing for me.

The slide pad functions would be a waste unless they are absolutley needed, which they currenty aren't. If this changes, then it would make sense to include them in a redesign, but unless the cpp catches on with consumers and devs it would only be a waste of money on Nintendo's part.
Also, I didn't think Gorrila Glass worked with the kind of touch screen the 3ds uses, but if it does that would be cool.

Also, I like the Sliders more than buttons. Having to hit a button over and over to get the volume up/down was a pain in the ass with the dsi.

@bibbly
I really don't see a redesign happening before late winter/spring 2013.

Honestly, I think Nintendo needs to take their heads out of their asses and stop releasing hardware before its ready. Having an extra analog stick in this day and age is a no-brainier, it should have been included on the 3DS to begin with. So yeah, they could work in an extra thumb stick. Extra shoulder buttons??? Who the hell needs those??? This is a portable gaming system for fuck sakes, we can't have it all. I do want longer battery life, but really, I can work around the current shitty battery life on long journeys by turning off 3D and putting the brightness down on low. And having to wipe off my top screen because of the lines always being there from the bottom screen is a pain in the ass, so I hear ya on that one.

Want to know what I really think Nintendo should do??? Just keep manufacturing the current 3DS, with a few tweaks, for a few more years and the scrap the whole damn dual screen bullshit. Give me a new GameBoy!!! But that, my friends, is another topic altogether.

Wordatron,

There is no need for a second analog stick. It wasn't something that was just "left out." Every game that will use the attachment will be perfectly playable without it. That's what the touch screen is for.

I still don't think the 3DS needs a second stick AT ALL. That's what the screen is for.

To be frank, I'm ok with my 3DS just the way it is and I don't think it needs a second circle pad. A longer battery life would certainly be welcome though.

Nah, the second screen is for item management, track layouts and boring mini-games... I am honestly fine with the system the way it is as well, I am just saying I wouldn't say no to a second analog stick... I do think they should leave it the way it is, like I stated earlier and just blow me away with the next portable system being a new GameBoy, not a more powerful 3DS or like a 4DS that emits smells and squirts water in your face...

Well, it doesn't need the second stick, but I've played Revelations with it and it doesn't hurt.

I wouldn't mind a second stick re-design. There are no negatives and plenty of positives.

The problem with having a second stick is a matter of ergonomics for the system. Vita pretty much proves this - its too thin for the dual analogs. Circle Pad Pro adds the right amount of grip that the 3DS doesn't offer because its also striving to be thin by default.

I don't know if putting Gorilla Glass on the touchscreen would be possible. Doesn't the "Glass" for the 3DS's touchscreen bend ever so slightly to the touch?, as this is a resistive touchscreen. They can use Gorilla Glass with smartphones because those rely on electronic interference to detect touch rather than pressure.I also disagree about replacing the analog sliders with digital buttons, I rather like that these slide.

However, I do agree they should find a way to put the second slide pad and the extra shoulder buttons onto a remodel if one comes (which it probably will). Maybe the extra buttons could flip from the backside or something, so that you can still close the 3DS flatly. And a bigger battery would be nice.

The problem with touch screen bezel hitting the top screen has already been fixed, actually. The initial launch shipment was the only shipment affected by it, as well with some screens being too yellow. Or so I hear. I believe you can get Nintendo to fix that for free if it is happening to yours, but I haven't tried it myself.

Something I would like for them to put on, even though this would be much more difficult to implement than any other possible change, is to increase the resolution of both screens by a factor of 2 and make the screen size larger. My biggest issue with 3DS graphics right now is not polygon count, textures, or anything like that, but the resolution. I was fine with 240P on the PS1, but as the detail you are trying to display goes up so should your resolution. Also, this would also improve the 3D effect as more subtle differences could be sent to each eye. Better quality cameras should be added as well.

Thanks for the replies everyone. For those of you that don't feel that a second analog stick is "needed", I felt the same way as you. "That's what the touch screen is for." While I wish I could still feel that way, sadly, I've played RE: Revelations both with and without the circle pad. Trust me when I say that the circle pad makes that game 100% better. Also, I'm quite aware that at its current size, the 3DS would not support an additional stick. That's why I said, make it bigger. I'm not sure about the Gorilla Glass thing as well, but it was just a thought. I was unaware that the bottom screen bezel had been fixed on newer models, this is great news. Increasing the screen's resolution would be a pretty nice addition, I certainly wouldn't complain. No, Rammstein, these additions would not make the 3DS cost $500.

Making a handheld bigger is never a good solution. The only machine that got away with it was the DSi XL, but it was a companion rather than a replacement for the original DSi, unlike how the DSi was effectively a DS Lite replacement. Seeing PS Vita up close, as sexy as it looks and as sleek as I think the original PSP was, it is way too big. If it was any thicker, I'd call it Game Gear size.

Adding and extra analog stick and buttons this late in the game would be useless, as the current model of the 3DS has a sizable install base in the market already, and devs aren't going to just start making games that require buttons that aren't included with all of the systems out there already among consumers.

I do agree with the point about the bezel around the bottom screen, though. That thing is completely unnecessary and just attracts dirt around the edges and damages the top screen, as you said. The next iteration of the 3DS really should just have a touch screen that's flush with the rest of the bottom half of the system.
