Resident Evil 5 - Best Action RPG of '09 so far...
Ninja Gamer | 3:44 PM on 03.24.2009 23 comments

For those of you who are thinking WTF is this Ninja dude talking about, just listen to why I consider RE5 to be more than just a straight up action game but to be actually more along the lines of an Action-RPG with more of a focus on the RPG side.

Just like with RE4, RE5 brings back the ability to upgrade various weapons to make them even more bad ass and super powerful. I mean come on a S&W 500 with a 5000 damage rating! I mean that is as kick-ass of a gun as anyone could ever want in a game! The primary reason I keep playing RE5 over and over again is this single reason: there is an appeal here to keep grinding away doing exchange point and gold runs to further upgrade my weapons.

I mean look at this way. You play an Action-RPG, say the popular Titan Quest that was released a few years back, what is the appeal? To level grind and make a more powerful character and get cooler stuff and then show it off to the world, right? The same concept exists in the MMORPG genre as well. We constantly want to show the world how cool our character is and what we've unlocked and RE5 is no different.

I remember the first time I jumped online after beating the single player game for the second time. I had to restart all the way over after beating it once due to my file save getting corrupted... needless to say I was furious. Anyhow, after jumping online I played with a guy that had the Hydra Triple Barrel, the S&W 500, and the Infinite Rocket Launcher. I was like OMG how did you get all that cool stuff?

After he informed me of what to do and what levels to do over and over again to acquire the most gold and exchange points the fastest I set out on my mission to get these legendary weapons.

I find myself becoming addicted to RE5 much like I became addicted to Titan Quest years back. The thrill of leveling up my character (well weapons in RE5) and acquiring more powerful legendary weapons to show the world that I am certified bad ass in the RE5 world. Then unlocking infinite ammo for all the weapons was just another way making my guns even more bad ass. Then jumping online and when playing with someone new, hearing them say OMG what gun is that? Chris has a chain gun!?

So in short, RE5 is an action-rpg in most respects. In an action-rpg you have to acquire more gold and xp to make a more powerful character. You usually have to do boss runs and dungeon grinds to accomplish this is a fairly fast manner.

In RE5 you have to acquire more gold and exchange points to make a more powerful weapon, which in turn makes a more powerful character. You usually have to do grind sessions where you have to play certain parts of the game like chapter 4-1 over and over again to acquire gold fast, or chapter 5-1 over and over again to get exchange points fast.

Is RE5 going to last as long as a typical action-rpg? No it's not, but considering I've already got 40 plus hours into this game and still haven't unlocked or powered every weapon up yet, or purchased all the infinite ammo options yet, leaves me with the desire to play even more till I've done it all.

So, I say RE5 is the best Action-rpg of '09 so far. That's my opinion and I am sticking to it.

For some reason I looked at the title and misread it as "Resident Evil 5 - Best Racist Game of '09 so far..."

44 Hours in.
Up to Irving on Pro with RL Friend, then I got Platinum.

Good fun, we hammered Ndesu, even though he's meant to be hardest part of a pro run.

Definitely has more longevity that alot of RPG's.

In Reply to MRSADISTIC: Yes the whole RE Series is the most racist series of all time. In RE 0-3 you are shooting zombies that mainly used to be white American people. In RE4 you are shooting white European people, and now in RE5 you are shooting mainly black and Arab looking people. So apparently the Japanese are racist just against almost every ethnic group. Next I guess RE6 will finish it's world tour and probably be set in Mexico, China, India, and who knows where else...

@Ninja Gamer: you forgot about RE7 being on Mars. that would be the most racist thing ever if you think about it.

Interesting post.

I bet there are other action games that could be viewed as an RPG from this type of perspective.

Also, your avatar is awesome.

Resident Evil 5... an RPG... simply because you can upgrade weapons to make your character better?

@NOTDRYAD

@notdryad, no not a full fledged RPG, but along the lines of an Action-RPG like Titan Quest or Diablo. I don't know, but it just reminds me of doing level grinds and loot grinds from way back in the day like you would only do in old Hack n Slash Action RPG's, that's all.

Notdryad, that is the funniest picture in this post SO FAR!!

Just because a game mentions a race, does not make it racist.

Just because a game has upgradable guns does not mean it's a fucking RPG. Go look up RPG on urbandictionary.

douche

OK. RPG stands for Role Playing Game. A game where you play a role. Technically you play the "Role" of Chris or Sheva and hence in that light RE5 is a RPG. And so is Pac-man, Super Mario Bros., Ninja Gaiden, Yo-Noid, Madden 09, and every other game that was ever made basically. :P

I agree with Ninja when it comes to the actual definition of "RPG." In fact, any game where you create your own character technically shouldn't be an RPG, since you're not playing anyone other than yourself.

So any game where you play a character is a role playing game? You guys know NOTH! An RGP is where actual character development is Emphasized. Where you can collect a HUGE amount of items, combinations of shit. Shit shit shit I dont know where I am going but RE5 is not an RPG BELIEVE ME DAMMIT UGH

lol, the whole point of my blog was the loot and exchange point grinds, the acquiring of better weapons and then having to spend countless hours upgrading said weapons reminds is very similar to an Action-Rpg. Plus the game does have more character development than Diablo, not much more but at least a little, because their is no Character Development in those games at all, and oh yeah while I am on the subject of character development it is pretty non-existent in WOW either, I mean come on who actually plays WOW and acts like their character and develops a backstory and moves their character forward story wise in the game...... no one at all.. just some food for thought =)

What you miss is that Capcom have made rpgs in the past, so they have some experience to draw from.

A lot of their previous games have this kind of rpg elements, like Forgotten Worlds or Area 88 (AKA U.N Squadron) and these were on arcade and console.

I suppose RE is a bit more action rpgish, but with less puzzles than before, so you do make a good point.

@Cowboy TTOP you are right about U.N. Squadron that was actually a very innovative shooter back in the day and one of my favs that unfortunately I had forgotten about till you just mentioned, so a big thanks to you! I've never played Forgotten Worlds and since you mentioned that has RPG elements in it, I believe I will have to track it down now.
