Oh, hi there. Didn’t see you enter. Anyways, welcome to my humble little blog. For those of you not familiar with who I am, the name’s Brian. I’m 24 years old and hail from Findlay, Ohio. I work at the local newspaper here as a copy editor, putting my four long years of college to actual use. Kind of. I think.
For those of you who might recognize me from elsewhere, I work as Assistant Gaming Editor over at
Blogcritics Gaming and as Features Editor over at
Tomopop. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because I get to do a lot of cool shit with a lot of cool people.
I've been gaming since the relatively young age of around 3 and I've played plenty of games, both good and bad. I'm continuously expanding my gaming collection, which has become more of an archive in recent years as I'm focusing on collecting older, less well-known titles. You'd honestly be surprised on what people are missing out on in bargain bins...
Other than gaming, I love anime, manga, sports, movies, TV, and a whole lot more. I also happen to have something of a legendary love for Cammy, to the point that I am the site's unofficial official Cammy fanboy. And yes, I do play as her in Street Fighter and do so quite well, too.
Also, I am
Chad Concelmo's B.F.F., my prize for coming in first in The Great Retro Quiz .18 - ActRaiser. Accept no substitutes. Not even Aerox.

Otherwise, I would much rather have the original cartridges, boxes, and manuals, but since the oldest cartridge system I have is a (blurry) N64, I never started any collections like that, and finding old boxes and manuals in good condition is really hard. So I guess for me, as long as it isn't on cartridge, I'd rather have the hard copy (with all the usual packaging), but if it's not on disc, it's also not "future-proof" and I might as well get it on VC.
The reason MS isn't impressing me with its new VC-feature is that a) the games aren't enhanced any more than the emulation of the original copies and b) the games they're offering are common as dirt. The reason why I'll buy Rez when it comes out on XBLA instead of when I eventually buy a Dreamcast is because the XBLA version will have cleaned-up HD graphics and remastered surround sound, so they need to find something like that to add to these old games for me to buy them digitally.
My first blog post on here was about things that I don't like about the Virtual Console. I don't feel as strongly anymore as the words would indicate, but those issues still bother me.
I'm sure the Xbox game selection will get better, just like it has on the VC. 15 bucks is a bit much, though, as not many Xbox games are all that rare.

also, will these vc games have achievements?
No, I highly doubt M$ would put achievements into these old titles. If they were to do something like that, they might as well put online support for Halo 1, which isn't going to happen although it would pump sales up for that by a huge amount.
Also, if they were to take the time to add achievements, they would take the time to fix the staggering amounts of bugs that they releasing the games with and not fixing. (See Kotaku for more info on that)
Overall I completely agree with you Nihon. We obviously aren't the target market, nor will I spend my good money on something I already own for the sake of "it being convenient." Plus, I would MUCH rather own a game fully for a console that I can actually hold and possibly sell verses own something that is badly emulated.
Great article.
What I am excited about are games that are remastered for the 360 Marketplace like Rez.....oh how I love Rez.
I'm going to stick with the VC service for several reasons.
1. No game stores around me sell refurb NES systems anymore
2. 480p on the Wii
3. 60" TV beats emulation on a 19" computer monitor
4. Wavebird/Classic controller offers a real controller to play these games
5. Game selection.
Granted "everything" is better "what's available now" on the VC, but the selection is pretty decent if skewed heavily in 1st Party's favor.
Honestly, it's the 3rd parties fault that the VC lineup isn't stronger than it is. We could have Megaman, Rush'n Attack, Contra, Jaws, Castlevania 3, and a whole host of other games up there that aren't. What's there is decent, and will likely improve over time. If Iwata is insistent that the Wii has more than 4 years of shelf life, then I'm fine with this slow trickle of games. I just wish more of them were games I wanted.
I do like the idea of not having to get up off the couch to change games though. so, I might consider using it if they add any games that I want, but don't already have, I suppose.
As for the Virtual Console, that's something I actually use. Sure I still have my NES and SNES all set up and ready to go when I want to hit 'em up, but there are so many old games I don't own that the VC makes sense for me. I was a kid in the NES/SNES heyday and Christmas only came the one time a year, so I never owned a lot of the classics. Instead I rented the Hell out of anything from the old Adventure Island carts to A Link to the Past, but I still missed a lot of games.
Then there's the fact that my SNES is barely hanging in there. It still works after a few tries, but it won't last forever. My NES works good, but the cartridges are a lot touchier than they used to be. I can't wait for Mario RPG to hit the VC because I'd still play it to this day if the cart didn't randomly erase my saves every once in a while.
