About Me

Oh, hi there. Didn’t see you enter. Anyways, welcome to my humble little blog. For those of you not familiar with who I am, the name’s Brian. I’m 24 years old and hail from Findlay, Ohio. I work at the local newspaper here as a copy editor, putting my four long years of college to actual use. Kind of. I think.

For those of you who might recognize me from elsewhere, I work as Assistant Gaming Editor over at Blogcritics Gaming and as Features Editor over at Tomopop. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because I get to do a lot of cool shit with a lot of cool people.

I've been gaming since the relatively young age of around 3 and I've played plenty of games, both good and bad. I'm continuously expanding my gaming collection, which has become more of an archive in recent years as I'm focusing on collecting older, less well-known titles. You'd honestly be surprised on what people are missing out on in bargain bins...

Other than gaming, I love anime, manga, sports, movies, TV, and a whole lot more. I also happen to have something of a legendary love for Cammy, to the point that I am the site's unofficial official Cammy fanboy. And yes, I do play as her in Street Fighter and do so quite well, too.

Also, I am Chad Concelmo's B.F.F., my prize for coming in first in The Great Retro Quiz .18 - ActRaiser. Accept no substitutes. Not even Aerox.

The 360 will go Blu-Ray eventually.

HD-DVD is dead and buried. Blu-Ray rules the roost. And the rumors of a Blu-Ray enabled 360 have continued to flare up. Microsoft denies the fact that they're going Blu-Ray at every possible opportunity, even while Sony hints that they might be doing just the opposite. And Nintendo... well, they just stay out of it because they don't care, but this situation affects them, too. More on that tomorrow.

However, even though they deny it, I think it's both a foolish thought and an outright lie for Microsoft to say they're not going Blu-Ray. Either they are or their hand wll be forced to go Blu-Ray, because they can't afford not to.

Whether you like it or not, Blu-Ray is about to become a big selling point for the PS3, and people will eventually begin to buy PS3s for the same reason the DVD-PS2 combo worked so well: it's the cheapest player on the market, and it also happens to play video games. Add in a great 2008 lineup, Home, a strengthening list of PSN downloads and free online gaming, and the PS3 becomes a tempting alternative to the 360 and a deal at only $399 to casuals.

That's not to say the 360 doesn't have some of those things, but right now, there's no counter-punch Microsoft can give. DVD is certainly not it, and neither is HD-DVD because that's dead. So the only way Microsoft can steal some of the Blu-Ray player thunder is to join the fray themselves, likely with the Elite 360 first and then maybe expanding as an option to the mid-tier console SKU.

If Microsoft doesn't go Blu-Ray, then what do they have to counter it? Live? XBLA? The '08 lineup? The first two are negated easily by the PS3. The third has a few advantages over the PS3... but most of the games are the same. For every exclusive the 360 can showcase, the PS3 has just as many, it seems. So it all comes down to Blu-Ray versus no Blu-Ray, and that's not a fight anyone can win right now.

I honestly think that because of this reason, we'll eventually see a Blu-Ray 360, and we'll probably see it sooner than you think. Microsoft needs to act fast before the PS3 can use Blu-Ray to push themselves back into the race and even perhaps overtake the 360 in worldwide sales.

Thoughts?

I'm pretty sure that Microsoft will release a Blu Ray movie player in the near future. Hell, I even believe that they will make Blu Ray discs a standard for their games in the next generation. That's just my opinion.

and it will still RROD.

It comes down to will it play when i turn it on or will it die and I have to send it in?

I think Microsoft should work on making a console that doesn't break first and foremost.

They would be crushing everyone else if they had just done that in the first place, or at the very least sometime in the 2.5 years it has been out, and wouldn't have to consider Blu Ray a big issue. These faulty consoles have got to be hurting their bottom line now and in the future more than Blu Ray.

Re: Blu Ray, I will never buy a Blu-Ray disc regardless so it doesn't affect me, but after fixing the consoles completely and stop handing out even shittier refurbs that should be something that they look at. There are a lot of people out there who don't really have the optimal TV for Blu Ray but will buy them anyways because they are "better than dvd's". People will buy the newest thing no matter if it makes sense or not, and that will eventually mean more PS3 sales if the 'Soft doesn't get a BR add on soon.

I could see an add-on happening, if Microsoft really cared about it. Their apathetic production of their HD-DVD drive leads me to believe they were just offering it for the hell of it. As far as a built-in blu-ray drive? That seems even less likely.

Also blu ray is not a selling point for people who just watch movies on a casual basis. I know, there are actually people out there that don't even watch movies. I don't know how this is possible but apparently they exist.

And I'm not harsh, I'm realistic.

no matter what microsoft does it will always have the RROD shadow hanging over them.

I hope it was worth beating Sony to the chase Bill. Cos now that the PS3 finally has some decent exclusives coming out, you are fucked.

They could counter blu-ray with that picture of cammy's ass on every console.

Other than that it would make sense to add it but it's a win lose for sony if that happens. They'd get royalties from more blu-ray movies but they'd sell less ps3's.

Here's what Microsoft should do:

Build a time machine. Go back to when they first started building 360s. Do everything the same way, except instead of shoving rolled up $100,000 bills in each others asses, make a console that doesn't continue to fuck up for the next 3 years.

For once, I'm going to defy Ron Workman. Microsoft will do this. Maybe not this year, maybe not even for the 360, but Microsoft WILL go Blu-Ray, provided that BRD continues to sell and its sales improve. If MS doesn't, then they will eventually be left in the dust, similar to how Nintendo currently is, technologically speaking, inferior in the hardware department. The next generation (not the current gen, the literal "next") will demand HD discs.

It's too late in the 360s life span for them to be considering a brand new disk format.
Mark my words, before this year is up, we will hear official news about Microsoft's next big console.
Maybe that'll have Blu-Ray.

Grow the fuck up and move on. Stop tarding it up in the blogs, we already know how you feel about.

I’m with Ron and Necros on this one. Microsoft seemed to not have their heart in HD DVD, and it appears that they’re going to go the route of digital distribution from now on (and that includes the “Nextbox”). I think that, at the most, you’ll see an add-on drive.

But you definitely make some good points, Nihon. The PS3 seems poised to have a breakout year in 2008.

What, yeah, of course they'll make a Blu-Ray add on. It doesn't make sense for them not to.

Don't think it'll happen. Like Samit said, MS is going to focus on digital downloads rather than another add-on drive.

I'm pretty damn sure I read somewhere that we'll see the first signs of the blu-ray add-on for the bawks in may '08. I could've read that wrong, but i'm not making it up.

I don't understand why people think digital distribution is going to be the way people are going to want their HD movies. Not only would it take a ridiculous amount of time to download several gigabytes worth of data, but there's also the issue of storing the stuff. We're not getting away from hard media any time soon; MS is going to have to release a Blu-Ray add on if they want their system to be a media center.
Sharpless's Avatar - Comment posted on 03/07/2008 17:35

Oh, well, I didn't mean it'd be INSIDE the 360. I just meant that it'll likely be an add-on, this generation. The next generation, it may have to be built in.
