About Me

Oh, hi there. Didn’t see you enter. Anyways, welcome to my humble little blog. For those of you not familiar with who I am, the name’s Brian. I’m 24 years old and hail from Findlay, Ohio. I work at the local newspaper here as a copy editor, putting my four long years of college to actual use. Kind of. I think.

For those of you who might recognize me from elsewhere, I work as Assistant Gaming Editor over at Blogcritics Gaming and as Features Editor over at Tomopop. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because I get to do a lot of cool shit with a lot of cool people.

I've been gaming since the relatively young age of around 3 and I've played plenty of games, both good and bad. I'm continuously expanding my gaming collection, which has become more of an archive in recent years as I'm focusing on collecting older, less well-known titles. You'd honestly be surprised on what people are missing out on in bargain bins...

Other than gaming, I love anime, manga, sports, movies, TV, and a whole lot more. I also happen to have something of a legendary love for Cammy, to the point that I am the site's unofficial official Cammy fanboy. And yes, I do play as her in Street Fighter and do so quite well, too.

Also, I am Chad Concelmo's B.F.F., my prize for coming in first in The Great Retro Quiz .18 - ActRaiser. Accept no substitutes. Not even Aerox.

Team Fortress 2: Meet the RPG
Brian Szabelski | 9:32 PM on 07.02.2009 15 comments

A long time ago, someone over at the Steam Forums did a mock-up of Team Fortress 2 as an RPG. And it was good. Really good. Good enough that I'd actually play it for the lulz. Fast forward to today, when the message board for one of the servers I frequent posted a little tidbit about a TF2 RPG being real.

No, it's not what you think. You'll need a nice flat table to play this one on. And some d20s.

[TPG] Deadshot and his cousin, [TPG] Wade Wilson were one day bored out of their minds and did not have TF2 to keep them entertained. Or a computer for that matter. So they devised the Team Fortress 2 RPG, a pen and paper take on the Valve MMOFPS title. It's still a work in progress, mind you, but the boys have already come up with quite a bit, including a basic set of rules, character sheets and weapons rulesets. They even have forums and a Steam group to join, if you are so inclined. It's a lot like Dungeons and Dragons, so if that kind of game's not your thing, steer clear. However, if it is, then it's worth a look, at least in my opinion. This is coming from someone who once took part in a Star Wars tabletop game for about two weeks during middle school before everyone forgot about it and moved onto something else.

In the end, is it something I would play? Absolutely.

... If I could tear myself away from TF2 to do it.

There was a topic on GFAQs where a guy "made" a story mode/RPG in GMod with the characters. I wonder how that's progressed or if this is that same person?

@Doomsday Forte:

The header image for this entry is front he exact same GMod idea you're talking about, except from the Steam forums post on it. I think these two ideas are separate, though.

My first thought was that you were alerting us to the existence of a Soldier weapon upgrade, Rocket Propelled Grenade. This is FAR better.

@Nihon: I see, I see. Pen and paper doesn't sound too bad, but even a fake console RPG wouldn't be too bad. It'd be super nice if Valve continued the idea, but if anything, it'd probably be its own game. Which I'd totally go for, anyway. TF2 was the only game in TOB that wasn't single-player-able.

Someday...*tear*

I'd try it out, despite having very little experience with tabletop RPGs.
