About Me

Oh, hi there. Didn’t see you enter. Anyways, welcome to my humble little blog. For those of you not familiar with who I am, the name’s Brian. I’m 24 years old and hail from Findlay, Ohio. I work at the local newspaper here as a copy editor, putting my four long years of college to actual use. Kind of. I think.

For those of you who might recognize me from elsewhere, I work as Assistant Gaming Editor over at Blogcritics Gaming and as Features Editor over at Tomopop. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because I get to do a lot of cool shit with a lot of cool people.

I've been gaming since the relatively young age of around 3 and I've played plenty of games, both good and bad. I'm continuously expanding my gaming collection, which has become more of an archive in recent years as I'm focusing on collecting older, less well-known titles. You'd honestly be surprised on what people are missing out on in bargain bins...

Other than gaming, I love anime, manga, sports, movies, TV, and a whole lot more. I also happen to have something of a legendary love for Cammy, to the point that I am the site's unofficial official Cammy fanboy. And yes, I do play as her in Street Fighter and do so quite well, too.

Also, I am Chad Concelmo's B.F.F., my prize for coming in first in The Great Retro Quiz .18 - ActRaiser. Accept no substitutes. Not even Aerox.

Soul Calibur IV Impressions = :(
Brian Szabelski | 10:52 PM on 08.09.2008 32 comments

Ever since Soul Calibur IV was announced, I had been excited for it and was counting down the days until I got it. But now that I've gotten my hands on it... I feel like something is missing. Or rather, some things.

First, let's begin with the story mode... which is very short and very disconnected. While past story modes have had these over-arching stories that are actually worthwhile, this time around, it feels like Namco tacked this on at the last moment without any thought. Not to mention that Algol is really an uninspired character who fits every fighting game boss stereotype imaginable.

Of course, it doesn't get much better with Tower of Lost Souls mode, where the whole point is to grind through challenges, unlock all kinds of equipment and accessories, earn a pile of gold, and generally get frustrated. Like story mode, it's a massive step down from Soul Calibur III in almost every regard, and I'm already pretty much bored with it. Mind you, I love this series, so me being bored with this already is not a good sign at all.

The game's achievements are also pretty ridiculous. The only way you're going to get most of these is to achievement trade with people online (100 critical finishes...really?!?!), since you can't use versus mode for any of them. This is, perhaps, a minor squabble, but one I have none the less. There should have been fewer number-based achievements, but given how shallow the story and tower modes are... I guess this was the only way to go.

Lastly, they've managed to nerf some characters while turning others into unstoppable behemoths. Ivy and Kilik have been rendered into being game killers, while Voldo's biggest moves have been significantly nerfed to the point that I'm finding it hard to play as him. While he used to be relatively easy to combo with, Namco has changed his move set around enough that this is no longer easy at all. Many of the combos I used in Soul Calibur III are not just different, they are completely gone. Yes, they have added one move that is perhaps the greatest move in Soul Calibur history - the Butt Bump - but that does not make up for the disappointment that my character has essentially been lobotomized. There are some serious balance issues in Soul Calibur IV that need to be addressed with updates. Otherwise, people are only going to play about 4 or 5 of the 20+ characters in the game, because those 4 or 5 characters are leaps and bounds above all the others.

I don't know if Namco will be able to fix any of these problems, and that's a pity, because I'm not enjoying this game as much as I should be. This game almost feels rushed, like parts of it are missing, which is odd since it's been in development for so long. If you're a fan of the series and you can wait on this game... do so. You're really not missing a whole lot right now.

I never played the other Soul Calibur games so I think that may be why I like this game so much. And Voldo is freaking unstoppable.

Kilik has always been a little cunt, though. D:

Bummer. With this and Soul Calibur Legends on the Wii, the series is officially in a rut.

I rather enjoy Soul Caliber and don't feel characters are as out of whack as you say. Kilik HAS always been a bitch but aside from that it's smooth sailing for me.

I wont fault a fighting game for a story mode because it's a fighting game..not Bioshock.Don't take this the wrong way Nihon but Have you considered the possibility that you suck at the game?

2nds Buster: Tira friggin pwns...well, her fighting style anyhow. I much rather like her Soul Caliber 3 green look more. Love that I can use her style on a custom char though.

I agree though that the Story mode is a step(leap) down from 3s.

The roster is more balanced than 3s though(minus the guests).

And the movesets get screwed with on each iteration, so thats nothing new there.

I am having fun with the game, but not as much as when I first played the beginning iteration in the Dreamcast. The flair is gone because it just feels like the same unbroken formula rehashed.
I also really miss Exhibition Theatre, I actually liked seeing the fighting style demonstration in HD.

I've been playing it on and off the past two days, and so far, it hasn't captivated me the way the second one did.

I suck online, but getting beat by Kilik players with the long range staff stabby maneuver over and over really is a buzzkill.

Also, does anyone actually pay attention to the story?

Story mode sucks and it's missing some of the great things that were added to SC3.

Dont judge Soul Calibur games based on SC3, it was easily the worst in the series. Also the achievements in this game aren't hard, It's the first game that I got all the achievements in, and I rented it.

I bought this game on wednesday, about a day after it came out.
On friday I shipped it to California as someone offered me Smash Bros Brawl for it, I'm enjoying Brawl quite a bit I must say.

SCIV was just a monumental dissapointment, shitty story mode, horrible tower of souls(some of the fighters are INSANELY hard thanks to their skillset) and horrible online.

I mean not only does the online suck because of the shitty netcode but you also have to deal with same move spammers and people using guys like the apprentice, worst of all, all they have to do is quit as soon as they lost and that hard fought victory of yours means jack shit(wonderful system isn't it?).

I haven't done any achievement trading and already have 600+ points so I don't know what your on about. 100 critical finishes counts in online normal as well as ranked and in normal offline matches during story mode, verses mode, tower mode, arcade mode. You just have to perform 100 of them. Not that hard. (I've done 6 :D)

While I do agree some characters have gone cheap (Kilik, Cervan...tes?, SEIGFRID *sorry I usually just play Cassandra and Sophitia*) there is always a way to get around them online.

You just have to hope no one is spamming the same moves over and over.

One thing I do hate though is the apprentice in the arcade mode. He's is a cheap whore.

Other than that: SOUL CALI IS AWESOM!£323532tgdzxvxds8z352w410

According to the people who did the MyCheats guide for SC4, Voldo actually got a major upgrade compared to the last game. The catch is that you're going to have to relearn him since his move set is so different.

dude, I suck at getting achievements and already have 480 points from it. I think it's time to realize that you do in fact suck at the game.

Not that this matters, as I also suck and have still gotten many of the achievements.

Yeah, I have to agree with you. The lack of story mode is what really disappointed me the most though, since SCII and III had such amazing ones. The lack of new charecters is also a bit of a bummer,, since apart form the amazing Hilde and Amy, the rest are either clones or broken *cough*The Apprentice*cough*

Soul calibur was never about the story and the reason I really enjoy this installment is because: Less bullshit more fighting. As a fighter on a next-gen console theres no reason NOT to get it unless you're a dirty cammy lover.

For once I have to agree with Yashoki.

The story in these games has always and will always suck. It's just a ridiculous excuse to kick people's ass.

Quite a few of the characters have been screwed up, Astaroth for instance is ridiculously powerful (even more than usual), Xianghua is nerfed, Kilik is a jammy bastard and Cervantes and Algol have projectiles........projectiles in Soul Calibur is a no no (but then again he's always had that)

I kinda wish I had waited on getting this game. But now that I've got it, I have to play it. I hate is that it turns me into a button masher sometimes. I hate myself for it.

Also, for "100 critical finishes" create a character with low attack power, and high defense and HP. Then go to tower of lost souls and keep attacking. Since your character's power is low, you won't do much damage, and if your opponent blocks enough, you'll soul crush them eventually.

Astartoh can decimate you and all he has to do is connect with one move, he can link the rest from there into one massive combo till you die and never get a chance to defend yourself, this happened to me so don't tell me its false.

Oh and Ivy has an infinite, AWESOME.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to think this game has severe balance issues.

I think a lot of it has to do with shitty ground recovery. There's not a graceful way to get off the ground without getting hit by a 20 billion hit combo. And if you pick a character without a chain or easy to pull off combo, then just forget about winning. The online lag kills any sort of strategic parrying as well. Plus if you loose? Just quit and bam no loss and no win for the other guy!!

Fan-fucking-tastic testing quality there guys. SC4 is terminally unbalanced and I don't think it every will be fixed. Till then I'll be playing yoshimitsu trying to earn hard fought wins.

RPGEmperor on psn if anyone wants to play.
