About Me

Oh, hi there. Didn’t see you enter. Anyways, welcome to my humble little blog. For those of you not familiar with who I am, the name’s Brian. I’m 24 years old and hail from Findlay, Ohio. I work at the local newspaper here as a copy editor, putting my four long years of college to actual use. Kind of. I think.

For those of you who might recognize me from elsewhere, I work as Assistant Gaming Editor over at Blogcritics Gaming and as Features Editor over at Tomopop. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because I get to do a lot of cool shit with a lot of cool people.

I've been gaming since the relatively young age of around 3 and I've played plenty of games, both good and bad. I'm continuously expanding my gaming collection, which has become more of an archive in recent years as I'm focusing on collecting older, less well-known titles. You'd honestly be surprised on what people are missing out on in bargain bins...

Other than gaming, I love anime, manga, sports, movies, TV, and a whole lot more. I also happen to have something of a legendary love for Cammy, to the point that I am the site's unofficial official Cammy fanboy. And yes, I do play as her in Street Fighter and do so quite well, too.

Also, I am Chad Concelmo's B.F.F., my prize for coming in first in The Great Retro Quiz .18 - ActRaiser. Accept no substitutes. Not even Aerox.

Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces = AMAZING
Brian Szabelski | 11:05 PM on 06.20.2008 9 comments

Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces is a new game coming to us from my favorite third-party developer, Namco Bandai. It's a flight-combat game based on a series of novels set in al alternate WWII-style world and filled with dogfights and epic battles. But best of all, it's got three great things going for it:

It's based on a brand new anime film from Mamoru Oshii, the man behind Ghost in the Shell. It's on the Wii. The Ace Combat team is working on it.

Jackpot.

Why? First off, I love the Ace Combat series to death. I bought my PS2 for Ace Combat 04, and no, I'm dead serious. Also, Ace Combat 6's exclusivity to the 360 played a huge part in me getting that system before the PS3 (as did Forza 2 and Halo 3). So finding out that they were behind this game makes me happy.

Second, it's on a console I own, specifically the Wii. According to the stories I've read on this, the Wii Remote is used for throttle and the Nunchuk for the control stick. Sounds practical and perhaps even fun.

Third, it's based off a film by Mamoru Oshii. After the work he's done on Ghost in the Shell, Blood+, Urusei Yatsura and Patlabor, I trust this man to put together a film that will be a great source for the Ace Combat team to draw from.

The only bad news is this is right now a Japan-only title, meaning I can't play it. I'm hoping Namco has the sense to bring it across the Pacific, but after the canceled the Nintendo Katamari games, I'm a bit nervous. However, if this makes it over here - and maybe even if it doesn't - I will definitely be buying it.

Definitely sounds like one to keep an eye on. Any word on when it'll be coming out and whether it'll be localized and exported?

I wouldn't count on this one making it overseas. However, I would probably buy this, if the Homebrew freeloader for Wii still works(which it probably will, given the tenacity of the Wii Homebrew Community)

I hate to nitpick...

Mamoru Oshii only did the movie of Ghost in the Shell. The man behind Ghost in the Shell is Masamune Shirow.

Oh my days! I've got to keep my eyes on this.

@Babylon: Yes, I know. I probably should have made it more clear that he was the one behind the movies and some of the related anime work. Shirow was the man who created GitS in the first place.

Yay! Finally someone who appreciates Ace Combat as much as me. This might actually be the game that makes me buy a Wii.
